This is from one of the UK tabolids

It's a shite song regardless.

Ronan Keating and Moya Brennan did a cover about 20 years ago and changed the lyrics to:

"You're an old slop on junk (I think)"
And
"You scumbag, you maggot
You're cheap and you're haggard"

And it's altogether a better version.

AllstarIsBrightbySmashMouth · 04/12/2019 17:57

And no, you can't go around saying the word faggot.

AllstarIsBrightbySmashMouth · 04/12/2019 17:59

@3catsandcounting it is a gay slur.

AnotherDFSsale · 04/12/2019 17:59

Love the song! I relate more to those lyrics than something by Cliff or the other perfect xmas songs out there. Sometimes xmas is shit for some people and this song reflects that!

Sagradafamiliar · 04/12/2019 18:00

And it's altogether a better version.

My eyes! No. No, it isn't.

TriangularRatbag · 04/12/2019 18:00

And no, you can't go around saying the word faggot.

Well you just did

AllstarIsBrightbySmashMouth · 04/12/2019 18:00

@TriangularRatbag Yeah but I'm gay

TheGoldenNotebook · 04/12/2019 18:01

Should we ban programmes like This is Britain. Ken Loache films. Any film or TV programme that depicts racist, sexist, homophobic characters? This is a story.. With characters.

AnotherDFSsale · 04/12/2019 18:01

*An altogether better version!
*
No it is not!

Lweji · 04/12/2019 18:01

You're cheap and you're haggard"

And it's altogether a better version.

And highly unlikely insults. Haggard, really?

AllstarIsBrightbySmashMouth · 04/12/2019 18:02

No it is not!

Yes it is! Grin

TriangularRatbag · 04/12/2019 18:02

Yeah but I'm gay

No way, me too!

donquixotedelamancha · 04/12/2019 18:04

Bloody hell. I’m shocked some people don’t get that it’s a good thing that a variety of different realities are portrayed in the arts, and not all of them are pretty and wrapped up in a bow

I'm amazed you are surprised; liberalism and tolerance are very out of fashion. I'm surprised there aren't more BertrandRussellesque posters queuing up to tell us which other art should be piled on the fire.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 04/12/2019 18:05

I'm so over this song. And people fetishise it so much, just can't get excited about it. Is Shane McGowan sober now? if not I'm amazed he's still alive.

Bahhhhhumbug · 04/12/2019 18:05

From 'Tonight's the night' by Rod Stewart played on Radio 2 the other day.....
'Come on angel my hearts on fire
Don't deny your man's desire
You'd be a fool to stop this tide
Spread your wings and let me come inside

The full lyrics are clearly about pressurising a young girl to have sex with the singer for the first time.
Just vile... give me the Pogues anytime.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 04/12/2019 18:06

Yes, and he’s had his teeth done.

saoirse31 · 04/12/2019 18:06

Brilliant lyrics, brilliant song. The rush to ban things that 'I' dont like is becoming ridiculous.

XXcstatic · 04/12/2019 18:08

And it's altogether a better version

You think Ronan Keating's version is better than Shane & Kirsty's? Are you Ronan's mum?

MzPumpkinPie · 04/12/2019 18:09

What next ?
Love this song .
The lyrics are a masterpiece and I agree poetry .
All for banning lily allen as one poster suggested 😂
I love folk music , mostly listen to alternative folk.
Luke Sital Singh etc
Absolutely amazing singer / songwriters
But none have that raw angst as Shane Mcgowen or Kirsty McCall singing fairytale of new York.
Some people are so precious

AngusThermopyle · 04/12/2019 18:10

It's always bern one of my favourites. Me & dh love a good ole sing to it too.
It also makes me remember the beautiful Kirsty maccoll, who was so talented and no longer with us. What a beautiful legacy song she left behind though.

Chesntoots · 04/12/2019 18:10

It is one of my favourite songs. Not just Christmas songs either.

It is so raw and I have every emotion listening to it. I go through nostalgia, to rage to sadness at what could have been.

The PP who suggested it should be on the school syllabus was absolutely correct.

Frankiestein402 · 04/12/2019 18:12

+1 for the interpretation of faggot as a friendly and in the way its said in the song its very much a loving jog.

For those saying the nypd band doesn't exist - anyone who's been in new York for new years eve or St Patrick's day parades will have seen and heard these splendid guys:

Alrighteo · 04/12/2019 18:13

Are you Ronan's mum?

PMSL. Indeed, only Ronan's Mum would think that.. Bless.

SaskiaRembrandt · 04/12/2019 18:15

And no, you can't go around saying the word faggot.

Yes, I can, I'm not American.

I can also say ZZ Top because I'm not French.

Ergo, Americans can wear fanny packs because to them that doesn't sound like a euphemism for a tampon.

billy1966 · 04/12/2019 18:16

I actually really liked the song for years but the total overkill of playing it relentlessly has soured it for me.

I turn it off when I hear it now.
I hope to enjoy it again in the future.
