This is from one of the UK tabolids

OP posts:
Drpeppered · 04/12/2019 15:16

@ColaFreezePop can you provide a reference to determine that?

MidnightCircus · 04/12/2019 15:18

Rufus aye, they are but it's a song about the commercial side of Christmas or the death of innocence in childhood (depending on who you believe, I go with Greg Lake myself), so least it was only the last two lines! I think it's why it's my favourite Christmas song, the bitter cynic in me just loves it Grin

savethecat · 04/12/2019 15:18

Horrible song.
But ban it? Crazy.

SaskiaRembrandt · 04/12/2019 15:19

Drpeppered but the word is/was only offensive in the US, and if anyone in the UK thinks it so that is because they have jumped on a US bandwagon. Anyhow, the song was written by a man of Irish heritage, and as a similar person I can say it is not an offensive word there, or at least it wasn't.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 04/12/2019 15:23

The word word was not and still isn't routinely used in the UK as a homophobic insult.

Gonetoget · 04/12/2019 15:28

You can also still purchase these in the shop. Are these to be banned as well.

Fairytale of New York should be banned from radio
MsRinky · 04/12/2019 15:29

Oh, I once saw Shane and Kirsty sing this live in the middle of summer and it moved me to tears then. It's a fabulous song. My DH got me this for Christmas last year

woodchuck99 · 04/12/2019 15:30

I like the song. It's a reminder that Christmas can be horrible time for some people. When it was released in the 80s it was so different from previous Christmas songs. Love all the "snowflake generation" comments considering it as a DJ in his 50s who wants to ban it. Teenagers always seem to love it and I don't think any of them are offended by it.

HandsOffMyRights · 04/12/2019 15:33

I miss Kirsty.
In a sea of Vanilla and a music industry that seems more regressive and stereotypical about female artists, I miss her individuality.

Doggodogington · 04/12/2019 15:34

Not snowflake generation, just snowflakes in general. This is top snowflakery behaviour. I’m sure this was all covered a few years ago when they took the word out and then had to it it back in after public opinion made them see how ridiculous they were being.

Honestly americans can't even spell or say aluminium correctly, wtf should we give any attention to this constant deluge of "wrongthink" hurty feelings pointy finger bullshit.

If the song gets banned can we also please start banning the replacement of s with z in words cos that really irritates, also the replacement of the word "contact" with the phrase "reach out", that really hurts my brain too ...

Loopytiles · 04/12/2019 15:35

I like the song v much.

NOT cover versions!

Ingridla · 04/12/2019 15:35

I'd not heard all this but I absolutely despise the song!

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 04/12/2019 15:37

The song is about a dysfunctioal heterosexual couple. The word "faggot" in this context is not a homophobic insult. It is a general insult.

Calling a woman a bitch is an insult.
Calling a female dog a bitch isn't an insult.

It's all about context. And in the context of this song, it's not a homophobic insult.

Does nobody care that the sluts and scumbags are equally being insulted in the song, no? Who's going to get offended on their behalf? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Doggodogington · 04/12/2019 15:39

Yeah, what about us sluts!

PowerHooper · 04/12/2019 15:42

I remember reading an interview with Justin Hawkins in which he said he deliberately set out to write a Christmas song that would (a) become an annual pension provider and (b) contain as many double entendres as he could ram in so that everyone would be singing bellend and ringpiece round the fireside.

This was, he later freely admitted, at the height of his Cocaine Madness period.

managedmis · 04/12/2019 15:43

My fave Xmas song

XXMansplainShieldActive · 04/12/2019 15:43

The fact is the song is a poetic masterpiece.

It should be studied widely.

notacooldad · 04/12/2019 15:49

I think it should be banned because it is over played and bloody dreary!
The lyrics dont bother me, just all the drunken piss heads singing this as if it's the best song ever! its

Nodancingshoes · 04/12/2019 15:54

I always loved Kirsty Macoll - she is sadly missed. This is my favourite Christmas song of all time 🎄

CatteStreet · 04/12/2019 15:55

'Anyone else think that the phrase "downmarket chav bilge" is more offensive than anything in the lyrics of the song?'

Agreed.

I always read that line in Do They Know It's Christmas? ('Well tonight thank God...') as bitterly sarcastic.

Newbie1999 · 04/12/2019 15:56

Agree that the lyrics are poetry. Great song.

ColaFreezePop · 04/12/2019 15:57

@notacooldad there are quite a few other Christmas songs that are also "bloody dreary". I actually like some of them as well.

princessTiasmum · 04/12/2019 15:57

All this banning of songs etc is ridiculous, you can't say or play anything these days,it's PC gone too far, not just this song, but anything now that [offends] which seems to be lot now
Before long we will banned from buying Black Magic, [chocolates] because of the word black, it's madness

hammeringinmyhead · 04/12/2019 15:59

I don't want to ban it, I just hate it. I get my Christmas cynicism from The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
