This is from one of the UK tabolids

Don't take away either Fairy Tale of New York or Die Hard... they're all that gets me through the sugary schmaltz of the extended christmas season!

PaddyF0dder · 04/12/2019 14:52

It’s a beautiful piece of art.

Censorship creates nothing. It merely destroys.

FishCanFly · 04/12/2019 14:53

i love this song, but PLEASE ban all the shitty Xmas music

Sagradafamiliar · 04/12/2019 14:53

PP mentioned The Darkness' Don't lets the Bells end. It only clicked with me earlier listening to it how they worked in 'ring piece' as well as 'bell end'. I'm shook!

I can't not love Fairytale of New York.

cheesewitheverything · 04/12/2019 14:55

@TheFuckingDogs it was your wedding song? That does take balls. Love it!

XXcstatic · 04/12/2019 14:55

I’d take this any day over the majority of sexist, misogynistic, porn culture tripe pop our kids have these days

Yup. We have this ridiculous, literalist call-out culture about particular words, but about 90% of chart music objectifies women and normalises tropes that are straight from porn, yet apparently that's fine Hmm.

JellyfishAndShells · 04/12/2019 14:56

Brilliant song. So much censorship now, so much being offended on the behalf of a notional someone else and positioning as being morally superior because of that stance.

The lack of critical thinking now and groupthink is depressing .

RoyalCorgi · 04/12/2019 14:56

From the Mirror article:

"In his posts, he slammed the 1987 track by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, calling it an "offensive pile of downmarket chav bilge".

Anyone else think that the phrase "downmarket chav bilge" is more offensive than anything in the lyrics of the song?

TheTinselrati · 04/12/2019 14:57

even addicts have Christmas & some people write songs and sign about it.

Babdoc · 04/12/2019 14:59

It's a brilliant pen portrait of a dysfunctional codependent relationship, where despite their mutual foul mouthed abuse, they still need each other. It's beautifully contrasted with all the schmaltzy Christmas stuff going on in the background - the choir, the bells, the lights etc. And for so many people, it's a far more honest reflection of their actual Christmas.

Samcro · 04/12/2019 15:01

ooh I love that song. when I think of all the shite songs out there, full of swearing and sexist stuff. how anyone can be offended by FTONY is beyond me.

BiBiBirdie · 04/12/2019 15:03

It is by far my favourite, with only the original Power of Love coming very close behind.

I've played it in gay pubs and they don't give a shit, in fact, they've been known to sing it over versions where I was trying to be politically correct and find one that beeped that out.
Happens every year this ban it/don't ban it debate.
I love the strength of it.

DarlingNikita · 04/12/2019 15:05

Anyone else think that the phrase "downmarket chav bilge" is more offensive than anything in the lyrics of the song?

Yes, absolutely.

HeckyPeck · 04/12/2019 15:06

They should bleep out the f word as they do with the n word as they are hate speech.

Juliette20 · 04/12/2019 15:07

What a complete divvy this man is.

I love how the song was around for like, 30 years, before some snowflakes actually listened to the lyrics.

Lweji · 04/12/2019 15:08

It's all about the insults, isn't it? It's supposed to be offensive.
I wouldn't teach it to 5 year olds.

Those wanting to ban it, have they ever watched Will and Grace?

It's the best Christmas song.

Lweji · 04/12/2019 15:10

Wait...

There are new smileys Crown Grin

SaskiaRembrandt · 04/12/2019 15:10

They should bleep out the f word as they do with the n word as they are hate speech.

Why? We aren't American!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 04/12/2019 15:11

Think you said you didn't like I Believe in Rather Christmas?

Thank you midnight

Its a song i sing...but those last lines Sad they are soooooo sad

snowybaubles · 04/12/2019 15:11

They should bleep out the f word as they do with the n word as they are hate speech.

But 'your an old slut is ok'?

I think if you are daft enough to find a song from 1987 offensive then you need to be offended by ALL the 'bad' bits, not just some

Drpeppered · 04/12/2019 15:13

People stating that f**got is only offensive and a slur in the US and not in the UK are being purposefully obtuse.

It was definitely routinely used as an insult when I was growing up in the 90s, and it was definitely related to people’s sexuality.

ColaFreezePop · 04/12/2019 15:14

They should bleep out the f word as they do with the n word as they are hate speech

It's not hate speech.

Not everyone in the world is from the US.

leckford · 04/12/2019 15:14

Who cares?

Topseyt · 04/12/2019 15:14

I love it, and I love the language that is in it.

It is one of the best Christmas songs around and has stood the test of time. I look forward to hearing it every year.

Only complete snowflakes want it banned.

ColaFreezePop · 04/12/2019 15:15

@Drpeppered in this song it means a-hole. Context is everything.
