To wonder how you will vote if you’re a right wing remainer?

I have a friend who has always voted conservative, but is also Polish (second generation) and strongly wants to remain in the EU. He really doesn’t know how he’s going to vote this time.

With the left being so far left right now, and Lib Dems tanking badly, I’m curious as to how people who have traditionally voted Conservative but would like to remain will vote this time, or whether they will vote at all?

Lib Dem sounds perfect for them, to be honest.

I'm a Lib Dem member and actively campaigning for them in this election (Labour won't get anywhere where I live, they don't even try really) but I do feel they're getting too right wing in many areas for me.

The Lib Dem candidate in my constituency is a former conservative minister. He only left the tory party because he's a remainer. Which makes him perfect for where I live. But I'm holding my nose a bit to campaign for him.

emwithme · 04/12/2019 18:25

It would be Lib Dems but they've said quite categorically that they don't want my vote so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Moonmelodies · 04/12/2019 18:31

If you're a remainer your only option is LibDems, no?

PettyContractor · 04/12/2019 18:35

I'm more afraid of a Corbyn government than I am of Brexit.

I followed the link someone gave on another thread to a site that analyses your answers to questions and tell you who to support, and apparently I'd be better off with a Lib Dem government, but as that's not going to happen, I've voted conservative.

PettyContractor · 04/12/2019 18:36

In fact that site told me that after Lib Dems and Conservatives, I should prefer the Green party to Labour.

noodlenosefraggle · 04/12/2019 18:38

I think you're better of voting on the most urgent issue, which is Brexit. It will have to be the first thing any new government would need to deal with, so just vote for the person most likely to defeat the Tory candidate. A hung parliament or Labour minority would mean another referendum. Then he could go back to voting Tory. Doubt a minority govt or hung parliament will last the full 5 years, so he probably wouldn't have that long to wait!

jor456 · 04/12/2019 18:45

Conservative. I have no intention of not respecting the Brexit vote plus indecision is doing more damage to the country than anything else. I also think Corbyn is a way bigger threat to the UK’s prosperity than Brexit.

PerkingFaintly · 04/12/2019 18:45

This interests me as we are a tory safe seat but one of the highest remain voting areas.(70%) Which is why i am always puzzled by the idea that conservate equals leave.

Because for some Tories, Brexit is just a MacGuffin.

What they're actually after is a Tory government at any cost, or a swing to the hard right as an end in itself, or both. They want the votes that have been mobilised by populism, and one current form of populism is shallow nationalism (always a fave and easy to rouse). And Brexit is the totem of the nationalist populists.

(NB Not All Leave Voters Are Like That. But it was a very tight result, so the tapping/creating the nationalist populist vote is what pushed Leave over the line.)

Brexit? it's not like it can be stopped anyway, so why would the Tories waste their political capital trying? Plus, for those Tory voters, Brexit's a price worth paying to get Tory govt, even if it wasn't their first choice.

KittyVonCatsworth · 04/12/2019 18:46

Just had this chat with my dad actually. I've always been Tory, as has he and he asked how I'm going to vote next week. My response was LD despite being swayed by labour policies, I just can't bring myself to vote Corbyn. But I just can't do Boris either. I'm in a strong labour seat where I live, my dad in a strong SNP seat and although he despises Boris, his loyalty will always be to the Conservatives coupled with the desire to keep NS out. I think I'll go LD in the hope they don't get in. I'd hate a coalition. I just don't know tbh. I'm a prospective politicians dream but a nations nightmare.

Why is a Corbyn government more frightening than a Hard Brexit?

mindproject · 04/12/2019 18:52

If all the remainers stood together and voted Lib Dem we could all stop worrying about Brexit. The Lib Dems aren't my ideal party (I am left-wing and Green), but they are right about this.

We have to stop thinking there are only two parties worth voting for. The Lib Dems are not a wasted vote.

ClaireP20 · 04/12/2019 18:52

User1471448556, might I draw your attention to an article which sums it up better than I can:
foreignpolicy.com/2017/06/07/voting-for-jeremy-corbyn-isnt-just-dumb-its-dangerous/

WeDieAndSeeBeautyReign · 04/12/2019 18:57

Lib Dem because they have the best chance of keeping the SNP out in my constituency.

I don't think I've actively voted for a party as opposed to against the SNP since the second Blair election.

Limitedsimba123 · 04/12/2019 18:59

As a right of centre remainer I will be voting tactically for Labour. Labour are miles away from a majority so hopefully none of the more extreme policies will go anywhere.

Brexit aside I wouldn’t vote for the current Tory party anyway due to their planned power grab that will damage our checks and balances system. I’m not sure why other Tory voters aren’t more concerned about this.

BlackSwanGreen · 04/12/2019 18:59

I'm a Remainer and I'll be voting Labour for the first time ever. I'm not crazy about Corbyn but it's the only way to have a chance of stopping Brexit.

BooFuckingHoo2 · 04/12/2019 19:04

I’m a remainer and I will be voting conservative. Leaving wouldn’t have been my choice but I believe the point of democracy is to respect the result of the referendum Confused

Limitedsimba123 · 04/12/2019 19:04

Christmaschronicles what if the Russia report suggests that the result of the referendum is unsafe?

firefly101 · 04/12/2019 19:09

We don’t have a Lib Dem standing so our choice is Independent or Green for remain. Tempted to voted Independent, however is this a wasted vote? So hard to decide! This area had always chopped and changed between Labour and Tory so maybe I should vote Labour to try to stop a Conservative majority.

KateBlush · 04/12/2019 19:09

I've voted Conservative all my life. I'm also a passionate Remainer. I simply don't recognise what the Tory party has become - it appals me. Make no mistake, I loathe Corbyn. But a minority Corbyn government would be infinitely less dangerous than one formed by the crooked, lying, greed-crazed, liberty-destroying, xenophobic, rabid little-English rabble that is Johnson's Conservative party.

We can vote Corbyn out, but it will take generations to overturn the disastrous effects of Brexit. The Lib Dems are getting my vote, and thankfully, in my constituency, we have a real shot of toppling the sitting Tory. Best we can hope for is another Hung Parliament. Stuff respecting the referendum. The wafer-thin result was achieved through an illegal campaign and the consequences are too monstrous and far-reaching for such a perversion to be upheld.

Bickles · 04/12/2019 19:12

No idea, they are all rubbish!
Ideally LibDem but they go nowhere in my constituency.
I’d go Labour if I knew they wouldn’t actually get in but if it would contribute to a hung Parliament, second referendum etc,
Not sure I can risk actually going through with it though!

Lordamighty · 04/12/2019 19:14

Centrist remainer who lives in a marginal constituency, my vote will go to the Conservatives. I am not too happy to be faced with the choice between Corbyn & Johnson but will have to go with the least worst option.
Also the Conservatives are the only party who haven’t included reforms to the Gender Recognition Act in their manifesto. This is a big issue for me as women’s rights are under threat from these reforms and too many MPs are queuing up to throw us under the nearest passing bus.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/12/2019 19:20

I am a centre-right, remaining, feminist.

I have to decide which value to throw out to decide how to place my vote.

user1471448556 · 04/12/2019 19:21

ClareP20 that article was behind a paywall. Managed to read the first para which was full of misleading information. Have you read the Labour manifesto? Put your thoughts on Corbyn to one side and read it. It is really not radical - think Sweden (not Venezuela... although the Daily Mail loves to spin that line). I’m not a Labour supporter, by the way, but I believe Brexit is a terrible idea and will destroy the economy and facilitate the dismantling of our NHS - so I’m a tactical voter ... I want a hung parliament with remainers holding the balance of power - and in my constituency that means voting Labour. Corbyn has been beyond shite on Brexit ... I am not a fan of his, but having resigned myself to voting Labour, I have actually been pleasantly surprised by their manifesto. As I couldn’t read the article, can you explain it to me how and why Corbyn is more damaging to this country than a Hard Brexit?

Apileofballyhoo · 04/12/2019 19:25

Labour for 5 years tops, or Brexit forever. I don't think it's a hard choice tbh.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 04/12/2019 19:28

The current Tory party are very middle of the road

Wtaf? Racism is so common in the Tories now its just allowed, the sick and disabled are treated like vermin, they blamed Grenville on the residents being too stupid to leave, their propaganda is in overdrive..... it just goes on and on.

The Tories couldn’t be more far right!
