to think that Nish Kumar being booed offstage has cheered me up no end?

Yes, I am biased, because I've always found his brand of left wing wokery unfunny, but, let's face it, to think he could go on stage in front of that audience, with his usual routine of 'Brexit supporters are stupid' and not get the odd bread roll thrown at him, is pretty arrogant.

What they're aware of is that they're hearing something that doesn't fit in with their prejudices and they can't handle it, so their reaction is to boo and throw things

One person threw a bread roll. These are people who raise a lot of money for charity. Don't be so narrow minded.

Alsohuman · 04/12/2019 17:28

It wasn’t a job, it was a bloody favour.

rhubarbcrumbles · 04/12/2019 17:29

What @BertrandRussell said.

BoneyBackJefferson · 04/12/2019 17:30

It wasn’t a job, it was a bloody favour.

So that makes insulting the audience ok?

PlacidPenelope · 04/12/2019 17:34

Job in the sense that it is what he does - i.e., entertain, he didn't entertain this audience whether he was paid for it or not is irrelevant, people at the event had paid to be entertained.

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 17:35

“ And there we have it, unless you think like me, vote like me, agree with me and hold the same opinions as me you are prejudiced, yet more of the laughably free thinking liberal dialogue.”

I don’t think that for a second. I do think that anyone should be capable of sitting politely for 10 minutes without booing and slow hand clapping. And maybe, just maybe laugh at themselves just a little bit?

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 17:36

What did he say to the audience that was insulting?

I'm so sad I looked up last year's comedian. It was Marcus Brigstock

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 17:45

Now Marcus Brigstock I would boo!
I wouldn’t actually- I don’t believe in booing anybody.

derxa · 04/12/2019 17:46

And the year before it was David Walliams

PlacidPenelope · 04/12/2019 17:47

And as some one that paid wouldn't you expect to not be insulted and for the comedian to have enough range in their material to be able to adapt to their audience. No-one seems prepared to answer that Boney.

I do think that anyone should be capable of sitting politely for 10 minutes without booing and slow hand clapping.

I think the set was scheduled for longer than that Bernard, and I don't see why people should be expected to laugh at stereotypes of themselves that they find untrue, insulting or unfunny BUT I do agree with you that it would have been far better to have either sat in silence, or talked amongst themselves and ignored Nish.

PlacidPenelope · 04/12/2019 17:49

Sorry Bernard should be Bertrand.

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 17:51

I don’t know much about stand up comedy- but I can’t really see how Kumar could have adapted his set to something completely different on the hoof! What did he say that was insulting to the audience? Didn’t he say that it was a joke about Jacob Rees Mogg that particularly upset them?

PlacidPenelope · 04/12/2019 17:54

Bertrand surely he must have more than one set of material and if he hasn't he must be a very one trick pony comedian.

Tellmetruth4 · 04/12/2019 17:59

I bet those who booed him off are the same types who scream ‘freedom of speech’! whenever it’s a minority being targeted. They’re quite easily triggered when someone punches up.

derxa · 04/12/2019 18:07

They’re quite easily triggered when someone punches up. I despair. He was there to make them laugh not to 'punch up' whatever the hell that means.

BertrandRussell
What did he say to the audience that was insulting?

I think the point is, what did he say to the audience that was actually funny?

Aridane · 04/12/2019 18:48

I do hope the audience's uncouth jeering behaviour won't put people off giving to the charity

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 18:49

“I think the point is, what did he say to the audience that was actually funny?“
Well not really. If he just wasn’t funny, they should have just sat out the 15/20 minutes politely. If he was actually insulting the there may have been justification for the booing.

Aridane · 04/12/2019 18:50

I thought it was funny when he went 'full Bercow' on the. - especially as John Bercow was in the audience (and got booed too)

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 18:50

“ I do hope the audience's uncouth jeering behaviour won't put people off giving to the charity”
Kumar’s tweeted asking people to donate, so probably not.

Aridane · 04/12/2019 18:50
