To think people can defrost their cars without running their engine all morning?

shinysnowman · 04/12/2019 07:12

I start work in a couple of hours. I have been awake since 5am, due to a steady flow of neighbours who have sat in their car with their engine running, one actually revving their engine constantly, waiting for their car to defrost. The first at 5am, each for a good 15 minutes each. It's been the same every day this week.

Don't people scrape their cars anymore? Is it wrong for me to be annoyed and think that they are being inconsiderate?

(Apologies to those with DC who are dragged up with them at this time!)

Am I the only person who uses de icer?! Quick spray round, get in the car, belt on, engine on and off I go!

StCharlotte · 06/12/2019 00:23

I live on a busy road with cars close to the house and our bedroom is at the front. The only car that might have woken me is our ex neighbour's (inevitably) souped up Subaru. It never did. Ice scraping would annoy me more.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/12/2019 01:35

@redandwhite1 yes I use de icer but that doesn't solve the problem of delisting the windscreen which is why cars have to be run before driving.

Rubyupbeat · 06/12/2019 01:40

Luckily my cars can be warmed up and defrosted without leaving the house or turning engine on.
I find the sound of scraping cars much worse than a running engine, although revving it is ridiculous!

imaginativeusername · 06/12/2019 01:43

Get a can of de icer. Spray your screens. Give it a min and be on your way!

CountYourRoosters · 06/12/2019 01:54

Hmm... I poor warm water on mine and off I trot

adaline · 06/12/2019 06:43

De-icer doesn't, for the five hundredth time, solve the problem of the inside misting up. Yes, it clears the outside quicker but until you can clear the inside, you can't drive off.

JustJayne1959 · 06/12/2019 07:44

Are these people waking you up? I gather you don't have a car, or you would know just how hard it is to scrape ice off all of the windows, by the time you get back around to the windscreen, it's begun to ice up again if the engine isn't running. Getting into a freezing car is awful and most heaters take at least 5 minutes to get the car warm on 0c days (or less). So yes, you are being unreasonable!

U2HasTheEdge · 06/12/2019 07:58

Get up five minutes earlier and learn to use the ice-scraper. If that’s too complicated for you, buy de-icer spray.

You clearly find it too complicated to actually read the thread.

@adaline totally right!!!

Rosebel · 06/12/2019 10:05

I had a car cover and the inside still used to mist up so I don't bother now. If my neighbours were that bothered by me scrapping or running the engine they'd let me know but pretty sure they sleep through it.
Why should you buy your child a nask? Well I was being sarcastic but do you want all car drivers to see where they're going or not?
You have to run the engine to demist the inside of a car. It's not difficult to understand!

Catwaving · 06/12/2019 10:20

De -icer is horrible unhealthy stuff

Just chuck warm (even tepid will do it) water over the car

FFS, it's so simple and totally clean!!!

Stop idling your cars and wrecking the air quality and environmental

IvinghoeBeacon · 06/12/2019 10:32

Omg catwaving how is it on this long thread that NO ONE has suggested that yet?!

CasanovaFrankenstein · 06/12/2019 10:57

Don't pour water over it if it's near freezing temp unless you are on ground where the water will sink or drain away. If it's freezing temperatures a little bit of water freezes very quickly, making the ground slippy. This can be dangerous for lots of people.

peridito · 06/12/2019 11:19

OMG how is it that even on short threads that SO MANY posters don't read even a little of what has gone before ? !

Many many many ppl have suggested water of varying temperatures .
Many have warned against the practice because of danger of cracking wind screens and because of icy puddles being left behind .

Aplogies if you were ,sarcastically ,making same point .

Nah, there was some great advice about walking instead Grin

Pedallleur · 06/12/2019 11:28

If you have heated front screen (I dont) it takes seconds. Have a garage? Put the car in and the windows are clear.

IvinghoeBeacon · 06/12/2019 11:31

I got up at 4.30am this morning to check whether the car was iced up, just in case I needed to get my son in the buggy and walk him 5 miles along the dual carriageway to his nursery and my workplace. But it’s ok, it wasn’t frosty this morning.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 06/12/2019 11:39

WOW! These are ingenious! I bet nobody with a heated windscreen or a garage (or both) had ever thought of using them in that cunningly brilliant way!

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 06/12/2019 11:49

Years ago when I was a Nurse, I remember coming home from a 14 hour shift to my next door neighbour ranting and raving that I'd woken him up scraping ice of my car at 5am. This was "selfish" apparently and I was a "bad neighbour". I was so shocked that anyone could be that entitled, to think that his desire to sleep in was more important than my need to get to work. He's clearly not alone as these threads come up every year. Honestly, what do you want people to do? Scraping is noisy, running the engine is noisy. Do you think anyone actually wants to be defrosting their car at 5am? Do you expect people to quit their jobs so those of you who are fortunate enough not to have to get up when it's still dark outside can have a nice, uninterrupted sleep?

BlaueLagune · 06/12/2019 11:56

Clearing your windscreen before driving is most certainly necessary. I can't actually believe people admit to being the idiot who starts driving without being able to see properly

But you have no choice because the stupid fan doesn't work until you're moving! Why on earth would a manufacturer design a fan like that? The other great design feature is that the passenger side clears before the drivers side does...

BlaueLagune · 06/12/2019 11:56

I mean the fan comes on but does't clear the windscreen fully until you are moving.
