To have a thing against baby names/names that are also those of serial killers?

I am due a baby soon. I am finding names very hard this time. I really liked the name Fred/Freddie (would be Frederick) and the name Ted/Teddy (Edward). But now I've got something weird in my head where all I can think about is people like Feed West or Ted Bundy and there are other names too.
Am I completely mental/unreasonable?

I'm sort of blaming hormones..

There are few Ronnie and Reggie brother combos near me Envy

aveenos · 04/12/2019 13:26

my neighbour's 10 year old DD is called Myra. I am not sure what they were thinking.

but Fred/Ted are fine I think.

MrsRipper · 04/12/2019 13:29

DH acquiesced when I wanted to call the first born Jack but drew the line when I said I wanted DS2 to be named The Yorkshire.

LittleDidSheKnow · 04/12/2019 14:46

At least a little time has passed since then. I had a school friend called Myra. She was born in 1967, so just when the evil one was very much at the height of her infamy. Bizarre!

PablosHoney · 05/12/2019 06:45

Myra 😱

x2boys · 05/12/2019 09:38

Ian Brady was at least as evil as Myra Hindley so why is Myra seen as a worse name than Ian? and there is also Ian Huntley.

echt · 05/12/2019 09:41

YABU for claiming hormones.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 05/12/2019 09:52

@x2boys I don’t know anyone called Myra, so would associate the name with the killer. I hear the name Ian a lot more, so wouldn’t think of Brady or Huntley.

ThighThighOfthigh · 05/12/2019 10:21

Had Myra been called Mary it would have no effect on the name.

I think Maya is a little bit reminiscent.

CustardOmlet · 05/12/2019 10:27

Beverley would raise eyebrows in my circle, but that’s because I’m in nursing!

KurriKurri · 05/12/2019 11:09

I think Freddy and Teddy are fine because they are popular names and have been for years. I think Andy and Kim Murray have named their new baby Teddy - so maybe that's a nice association (it's also my Dogs name - but ignore that Grin)

I once taught a boy called Michael Myers - which was unfortunate, don't think his parents had ever watched Halloween !

OkPedro · 05/12/2019 11:19

I know an Isis pronounced exactly like ISIS..
I feel sorry for the mother as she named her after a Greek? Goddess 😬

PablosHoney · 05/12/2019 12:08

Ian isn’t really a particularly current name

drspouse · 05/12/2019 12:11

I saw a GP whose first name was Damian the other day. I thought "popular name in 70s/80s" and guessed his age before I saw him. I didn't think "horror film".

LittleDidSheKnow · 05/12/2019 12:20

Ian Brady was at least as evil as Myra Hindley so why is Myra seen as a worse name than Ian?

Ian Brady was a lot more evil that MH!
But Ian was/ is a very common name (less so now, maybe), so wasn’t so affected. I mentioned a Myra my age, but realise I know/knew lots of Ians my age, too and didn’t think to mention that... it was a common enough name then, especially in Scotland. It just seemed a coincidental thing. Myra stands out as it was quite unusual anyway.

Ian has faded from popularity. Brady may not have initially discouraged its use, but combined with Huntley and Watkins Ian is now pretty doomed!

hannahfaith · 07/12/2019 02:08

I work in criminal justice and am into crime documentaries and read a lot of information about serial killers and yet names like Fred, John and Rose and even Charles and Teddy don't bring serial killers to mind.
If you lived around the same area that they targeted then I would avoid them like the plague but if you're nowhere near there I think you're fine!
(With Teddy especially because it seems that you're planning to call him Edward)

SheilaBruce · 07/12/2019 03:54

Flouncy I always wonder what on earth Elizabeth Hurley was thinking. Hmm

RebootYourEngine · 07/12/2019 08:52

I understand what you are saying OP. I also hear or see a name and put a connection on it whether it's to a person that I went to school with, worked with or whatever. Choosing a name is hard.

I knew a Damien, he would be around 10 years old now. I cringe every time I hear Ronnie or Reggie.

virginpinkmartini · 07/12/2019 08:59

Saw some jackass on a public Facebook group declare her twins were called Ronnie and Reggie, cue 😂 and 😍 from a worrying amount of people. Yes hun, naming your children after raping, murdering gangsters is so clever of you. You're not common at all.

SansaStarky · 07/12/2019 09:01

Fred remind me of them fredo chocolate bars

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/12/2019 09:04

Unless you plan on having a daughter who you'll call Rose, I think you'll be fine with Fred/Freddie.

Equally Charlie would make me think Chaplin before Manson, and I don't think Ted Bundy was well known enough in the UK for people to make a connection with that name.

ThighThighOfthigh · 07/12/2019 09:05

Damien is a nice name but the films w too big and the name unusual enough that it renders the name unusable. Had the films been called Richard i don't think it would have any effect. Hence Ian not being affected.

High profile victims could also affect a name - Madeleine maybe?

Bluesheep8 · 07/12/2019 09:08

Nothing wrong with Reggie or Ronnie! I'd never make the Kray association unless twins were named Reggie and Ronnie tbh.

Bluesheep8 · 07/12/2019 09:10

Why would a pp cringe when they hear Ronnie OR Reggie? Ronald and Reginald are very traditional names and were around long before the Krays were christened
