To have a thing against baby names/names that are also those of serial killers?

I am due a baby soon. I am finding names very hard this time. I really liked the name Fred/Freddie (would be Frederick) and the name Ted/Teddy (Edward). But now I've got something weird in my head where all I can think about is people like Feed West or Ted Bundy and there are other names too.
Am I completely mental/unreasonable?

I'm sort of blaming hormones..

Attila the meerkat is on here with the FOG and incredibly good advice. But I'd probably avoid that name.
Thighs, have you escaped?

Laserbird16 · 03/12/2019 22:49

As long as it isn't an obvious serial killer/genocidal manic name i.e. Adolf, Hannibal you'll be fine. Unless of course your surname is West/Crugar/Bundy? Mix it up a bit, Fred Bundy? Ted Crugar? Or go for lesser known mass murders? In all seriousness someone somewhere has used your baby name that could potentially have negative connotations. You have to go through excluding preople you hate from school/work, pop stars, could also double as per names. Old English names aren't common any more, not many Aethelwulfs

BlueEyedFloozy · 03/12/2019 22:55

YABU.

I know atleast 8 Freddie's between 2 and 14 and they're all (apparently) named after Freddie Mercury. Can't say I've ever thought of the serial killer association despite being a crime junkie!

LoonyLunaLoo · 03/12/2019 23:04

They’re pretty common names so I wouldn’t worry. There’s a girl at DS’s school called Isis (after the goddess but come on, how could they not have heard of ISIS especially as she’s about 6/7 and would have been born at the height of ISIS).

IAmCatBed · 03/12/2019 23:12

My Granddad was called Fred. He was a fabulous man, never committed a crime in his life, and I miss him every single day.

If you can't cope with a name that long dead arseholes had, which is shared by millions of other people, then I think you're a bit bloody weird to be honest.

For most names no doubt a bit of Googling will bring up some sicko somewhere in the world at some point in history who has committed some very unpleasant criminal act.

Phrowzunn · 03/12/2019 23:40

Don’t use Freddie or Teddy - not because of the killer thing but because they are so boringly common at the moment - do you really want to give your kid a name that 5 other kids in his class will have? Go for something outwith the current top 20 most popular baby names!

RageAgainstTheSnowMachine · 03/12/2019 23:43

I was about to ask who is calling their poor child Harold*?
Ted, Ed, Fred are all fine, tis your hormones Brew Cake

percheron67 · 03/12/2019 23:47

Don't pick Dexter!

Alte · 03/12/2019 23:53

I wouldn't think of Ted Bundy, my first connection was actually Ted from Postman Pat Grin

Catsandchardonnay · 04/12/2019 00:02

Father Ted, Ted in the Fast Show, and Teddy Bears - please don’t pick Ted! With Freddie no-one would think of Fred West (but Freddie Krueger maybe!) What about Ed/Eddie/Edward?

x2boys · 04/12/2019 00:09

@LoonyLunaLoo the computer system we used at the NHS trust I worked at was called ICIS but pronounced ISIS to be fair it was devised before ISIS really kicked off bigot was a bit Hmm

x2boys · 04/12/2019 00:10

but it*

ThighThighOfthigh · 04/12/2019 00:14

Butter I'm on the loose.

CaptainCabinets · 04/12/2019 01:08

To a certain extent, yeah.

But Rose? My best friend is called Rose and I’ve never associated her with Rose West! Confused
I know a million Freddies, never associated them with Fred West.

I did, however, change the name of my pet gecko from Isis (the goddess!) to Iris Blush. In my defence, she was very old and I named her waaay before any terrorist connotations were flying about.

I’d probably raise an eyebrow at a baby Dahmer, but I’d say it’s an unlikely event.

Thepeabody · 04/12/2019 04:11

@LoonyLunaLoo
I was going to mention a little girl called Isis as well who I know of. Gorgeous little girl but what was mum thinking, as she would have been born at height of Isis activities.
From the age you give I’m thinking it may be the same person (mum a model?) as never heard the name IRL before or since.

Boredisboring · 04/12/2019 07:22

I knew what I wanted to call my son a long time before he was concieved, however, when coupled with DH's surname, it was the complete name of a serial killer. Both names seperately are quite common but together it was too much, particularly as this individual's crimes had been horrific. I was heartbroken.

Freshnewus · 04/12/2019 07:29

😂 I have two serial killers then.
I have a Fred and a Ted.

lilsquish · 04/12/2019 07:33

I have a different problem (well it's not a problem for me, I love the name I picked)

but my DD shares the name of a well known murder victim.

have had mixed reactions to it, some out right say something, some allude to it and some haven't made the association at all

ThighThighOfthigh · 04/12/2019 08:08

Fresh call your 3rd Ed (Kemper).

Whattodoabout · 04/12/2019 08:12

Honestly, common names like Ted, Rose and Fred won’t make a single person associate it with the serial killers.

If you were to choose a more obscure one like Myra people may have something to say.

Whattodoabout · 04/12/2019 08:13

Also wanted to add that Ted Bundy was Theodore not Edward.

SquareAsABlock · 04/12/2019 08:51

Fred and Ted are pretty generic these days. As others said, it's only names such as Adolf that would get a look.

Having said that, I didn't realise for years that all the characters in Gavin and Stacey had murderer surnames! Even though one of the characters is actually called Pete Sutcliffe Confused.

VladTheImp · 04/12/2019 12:07

Vlad is a fine name! Grin

FizzyIce · 04/12/2019 12:08

@ThighThighOfthigh Or as in Gein .
He was an Edward Theodore

fairybeagle · 04/12/2019 12:46

@Whattodoabout thank you for that, that actually makes me feel better about using it 😂

Again, for anyone who hasn't read my full post/further post. I do not think other people will judge my child's name as a serial killer, I am making the connections myself and feel crazy!
