I don't see a problem with it

PositiveVibez · 03/12/2019 19:59

I would have no qualms at all doing this with my 10yo dd. She is very sensible. Are you talking about after school?

JigsawsAreInPieces · 03/12/2019 20:00

My dd used to let herself in while her dad was on night work - he was a light sleeper and she knew to wake him if any problems and not to open the door or answer the phone. He was generally up by 3pm anyway as he knew she was coming home (plus the cats had usually walked over him from lunchtime so he was awake!)

PositiveVibez · 03/12/2019 20:00

X-post.

What night shift does he work that he would still be in bed at that time?

Sunnydays999 · 03/12/2019 20:00

Yes we live on the same road as school she already walks home alone .

Sounds fine to me.

Sunnydays999 · 03/12/2019 20:01

Positive he can work up to 15 hours

How far is school? Are there any main roads to cross? Could she walk with friends/their parents, at least part of the way?

My Dd1 is in Y5 and I think on balance I'd trust her to walk and let herself in.

I'm considering the same thing for her after school club. My mum will be here with younger DS and dd2 and it will save her having to take them both back out again after an hour. I'm waiting til after Feb half term when it's light at 4pm again.

EekThreek · 03/12/2019 20:02

Ignore all that, massive x posts!

John470322 · 03/12/2019 20:04

Why not as your husband is at home so some major disaster like a house fire would wake him.

RedskyToNight · 03/12/2019 20:04

Absolutely fine. You might want to make sure she can actually open the door - we have a dreadful lock that there is a knack to and it took the DC ages to get the hang of it!

RevengeOfTheRoundRobin · 03/12/2019 20:04

Don't see a problem with that.

BlueJava · 03/12/2019 20:06

Get her to do a dry run but I'd have no problem with it. She needs to know she can wake her dad if anything happens obviously.

treeofwhispers · 03/12/2019 20:06

Great for her to get used to looking after keys and using the lock.

Sunnydays999 · 03/12/2019 20:07

The school is very close no main roads . She already walks home alone as it’s about 3/5 min walk

Sunnydays999 · 03/12/2019 20:08

Thankyou . My mother thinks it’s next to child abuse so I was wondering if I was off the mark !

AlpacaGoodnight · 03/12/2019 20:17

Quite normal for that age around here!

Brakebackcyclebot · 03/12/2019 20:31

I wouldn't even be questioning this. Of course it is OK!

slipperywhensparticus · 03/12/2019 20:32

No it's fine I used to do it then put the kettle on and make my dad a cup of tea

changeforprivacy · 03/12/2019 20:39

What night shift does he work that he would still be in bed at that time?

I see these comments a lot on threads about night shift workers. It’s not unreasonable to be asleep at 4pm if you work all night. In fact it’s more normal than not. I think people confuse night shift with people who work until 3am. Night shift often doesn’t finish until 8/9am.

myself2020 · 04/12/2019 05:05

Absolutely fine. if there is an emergency she can wake him.

FabbyChix · 04/12/2019 06:54

My eldest had a key at that age and let himself in to an empty house

GaraMedouar · 04/12/2019 06:56

Absolutely fine.

isitxmasyet · 04/12/2019 06:57

Sounds absolutely fine.

Who is questioning why a night worker would be in bed until 4pm?

My night shifts are 9-9 and I spend a bit of time eating and relaxing after I get home at 10am so rarely get to sleep until midday. So I sleep until about 7-7.30 then shower, eat and go back to work.
