To ask you for the best way to lose a stone

Really need to face up and lose the extra weight, also menopausal so may be harder? Anyway, was wondering whether it is best to join a slimming club or go it alone. Any advice gratefully received!

I find it so hard to eat less. I managed to lose half a stone by being strict with myself and cutting out sugar, snacks and eating after 7 (night time snacking was a huge problem for me - and this was the absolute toughest to do). Then I gave up and lost another half a stone by cycling to work everyday and running twice a week. Also I cut out meat and milk (half way to being vegan - if you ignore the fish and cheese!). Now I eat as much as I did before and am a bit slimmer and happier.

Jodie77 · 02/12/2019 19:43

I usually lose the bulk of the weight through exercise and healthy eating, maybe with the help of a slimming club or plan but not always. The last stone is always the hardest to lose and usually means going on a strict calorie controlled diet for me.

It is all about what works for you, emotional eaters find group support really helpful, feasters ie people who eat large meals a high protein diet may work as protein can fill you up, grazers, who pick throughout the day seem to do better on a Mediterranean diet. It maybe just a case of trying something and see if it works for you, if you are motivated then that’s the first step, good luck xx

Low carb and low calorie. Get the Blood Sugar Diet book and read it, then do it. I've lost 38 pounds in three months, plus I'm sleeping better, have more energy, and better mental health.

Anonanonanonanonanonanonanon · 02/12/2019 19:56

I downloaded the Noom app on my phone (I think it's about £40 per month - for which you get: daily articles about the psychology of weight loss and food choices etc to better understand your eating patterns; contact with a personal coach; and membership of a support group who you can chat with online). I lost around a stone in six months and I've kept the weight off.

What it boiled down to really was daily weigh-ins, and calorie counting. That made me realise how often I shovel in unwanted calories, so I cut back on snack and booze portions. It surprised me how easy it was with very minor changes to my eating habits, that just came from being more aware of what I was eating and why.

dottiedodah · 02/12/2019 19:56

My Cousin and her hubby both eat the same diet : Porridge for BF (made with water though!).Some Ryvita /Cottage cheese for lunch with ,some fruit /low fat yoghurt (either or) and eat normally in the evening !Seems to work for them ,Mostly a black coffee or some water to drink .No biscuits or cake (Sob)!

Grumpos · 02/12/2019 20:01

The basis of losing weight is a calorie deficit.
It really is irrelevant how you get there. You cannot eat more calories than you burn and lose weight, so ALL options, keto/ slimming world / ww / intermittent fasting etc etc - work on the basis of a calorie deficit.
It really is that simple.
It’s not simple to control sticking to it though, otherwise the diet industry wouldn’t exist. Choose the method you know you can realistically stick to.

Spitsandspots · 02/12/2019 20:02

My fitness pal. Weigh and log everything you eat/drink. I was shocked at how many excess calories I was consuming and I ate healthily (although...wine) so kept going up. I started New Year’s Day, I’ve stayed 1&1/2 stone down. No exercise as I have conditions that mean exercise is now impossible.

Also work out your TDEE -what you actually should be consuming- and reduce calories by 20% to lose weight

tdeecalculator.net

Good luck!

horse4course · 02/12/2019 20:02

Just leave it by the side of the road when no ones looking

Sssneks · 02/12/2019 20:09

It's all down to calories in vs calories out. All diets are just a variation on that theme or tricks for helping you achieve that.

Personally, I found MyFitnessPal amazingly helpful when shedding the baby weight. Just set a target for a daily kcal deficit, log everything you eat (the app also has a Barcode scanner and a huge database of foods, including most brands, chain restaurants and supermarket own brands) and don't go over your limit. Treat calories burned from exercise as a bonus and try not to eat them back if possible. Remember to track drinks, condiments, olive oil, salad dressings etc as well as actual food. It all adds up.

If you do this and do it honestly, then you'll lose weight.

ShetlandWife · 02/12/2019 20:13

I know low carb is the trend, but due to health reasons earlier this year I started eating low fat and cut right down on meat and dairy. I also chose whole foods (eg brown rice, wholemeal bread and pasta, and any added sweetness is from fruit, honey or maple syrup). I didn't do it to lose weight, but I have lost nearly two and a half stone without thinking about it.

I don't watch what I eat, I just don't eat much of the things that were causing me problems - I don't cook with oil, I occasionally have fish and rarely have meat or eggs. The only dairy I have is a bit of cheese now and then, and butter on wholemeal toast.

The thing is finding something that suits you and your lifestyle and your preferences. I couldn't do keto, partly because of health but also because I'm not that into meat anyway. What I'm doing wouldn't suit everyone either.

Pintsizedblondie197 · 02/12/2019 20:25

Calorie counting has really worked for me. I log everything on to My Fitness Pal and I’m on 1200 calories per day.

robocop101 · 02/12/2019 20:39

I'm TRYING the 16:8 - started this week!

I need to loose a stone of the baby weight from the 2 babies I've had in the past 3 years.

Finding it super tough with the little ones as I usually snack throughout the day when I feel low on energy Blush

Watching with interest! Smile

al2616 · 02/12/2019 20:44

Have you tried the Cambridge 1:1 plan? They do meal replacements. It's good for fast weight loss. Not sustainable long term but great for a kick start!

Moomin12345 · 02/12/2019 20:52

The best way is to eat less and exercise more so that your calorie intake is lower than the calories you burn. Or liposuction.

Jaybaydba · 02/12/2019 21:14

It's really not that hard. Take a look at what you're consuming over a week. See if there are things you can cut out. No one needs to starve themselves and fad diets don't work. You'll only put it back on.
Alcohol.. such a waste of calories.. try and switch from wine and beer to clear spirit (vodka and gin) and slim line tonic.
Cut out the snacks.
Eat colours not brown. Veg eat as much as you like
Get protein (beans, pulses and meat if you are a meat eater.)
Drink as much water as you can.. don't go overboard just up your intake .
And yeah.. exercise.. I'm not saying hit the gym.. if that's not you.. then it's not you .
Walk.. walk everywhere.. as much as you can..
And the most important one.. sleep ... Get an good night's sleep.

Some little tweaks.. don't eat after 7/8 of you can.. (hungry afterwards.. drink a cup of tea)
Don't go mad in breakfast.. but also don't be scared of carbs.. they won't make you fat.. you need carbs..

So why am I saying this.. I've done all of the above.. and lost 3 stone.. the biggest and easiest thing I did was just take note of what I was eating.. I've not done anything crazy.. no diets . Still eat what I want.. but alcohol and sleep were the biggest changes I made..

SquiggleyWiggly · 02/12/2019 21:17

You need to find what works for you depending on your personality. For me I'm terrible at restricting specific foods, it just makes me want to eat them more.
So I used the Lose It app which is calorie counting but you can eat what you want. I lost 10kg in 4 months which felt right for me as it was sustainable and steady. I also tended to look at the count over the week, so would try to eat less on weekdays than my allowance so I could eat more on the weekends.
I also tried to only eat between 11am and 10pm, which helped keep my calorie count down and apparently it's healthier (like the 16:8 diet)
Hope that helps!

Daddylonglegs1965 · 02/12/2019 21:23

I have a lot to loose. Slimming world is quite good. I am doing that at the moment it works but for me it’s slow as I do love my food.

However, last summer motivated by a few social events I had coming up and wanted to look forward to and feel less big and more confident I lost two stone in 4 months by joining going to a gym, walking more (I bought a cheap Fitbit and tried to do 10K most days), having some personal training sessions and eating better/less I used an app on my phone someone told me about and I logged my weight loss. I think the main thing for me was my motivation. I felt great for the first time in years.

TV48 · 02/12/2019 21:50

I would look at what you eat, quality of nutrition and see where you can improve. So try and eat veg, fruit, fish, meat nuts etc. If you can use my fitness pal, and track each day then that can really help keep you focused. Work out your total daily energy expenditure, TDEE, Google it and i would reduce cals by 300 for fat loss. Try and move every day, do what you enjoy, wlak, swim, run, gym, yoga x and get sleep and stress levels in track.

Coyoacan · 03/12/2019 03:32

Stop eating just before you feel full, as a way of life.

TheMidasTouch · 03/12/2019 03:41

Go very low carb and stop drinking alcohol. Get on the scales every morning to give you the determination to carry on. 4 days of low/no carbs and you should get into ketosis and start burning your fat stores.

eaglejulesk · 03/12/2019 04:07

Jaybaydba's advice is good. Diets aren't sustainable in the long term, to lose weight your whole attitude to food needs to change (I'm still working on this by the way!) for a lifetime. Don't cut treats out, but keep them as treats, not everyday eating. Walking and a good night's sleep are important too . Good luck, whatever you do.

Dita73 · 03/12/2019 04:08

Avoid anything that tastes nice

Ohpleasefuckofflove · 03/12/2019 04:33

I’ve lost 7 lbs by using a meal replacement shake on a morning, eating a small dinner and a smaller tea. So literally making my dishes smaller. I eat for 4 days no more than 1200 kcal, 2 days no more than 800kcal and one day I can eat what the hell i want. I do at least 10k steps per day too. And I still eat cake, chocs etc. So In 3 months I’ve lost 7 lbs and I’ve kept it off. 3-5 more and I think I’ll be happy :) it’s been easy I would honestly have to say

KitschBitch · 03/12/2019 23:59

Love the liposuction idea, Moomin! Think I will log calories and save the booze for weekends to see what happens. Next stop will be low carb - heard a guy at the gym the other day saying he was still losing weight but drinking g & t's!
