Really need to face up and lose the extra weight, also menopausal so may be harder? Anyway, was wondering whether it is best to join a slimming club or go it alone. Any advice gratefully received!

Intermittent fasting combined with a low carb, whole foods approach. (or at least low sugar if you can't do low carb.)

and never drinking your calories is great advice as well, yes.

BustedDreams · 02/12/2019 08:28

@KitschBitch there have been some great suggestions posted.

You need to decide what you’ll know will work for you. How old are you? What weight are you? How long has it taken to get where you are now on the scales. Have you any chronic illness? Take any medications? Recently had a baby? Answers to those questions are different for everyone and therefore the solution will be different.

We are all different. I personally couldn’t commit consistently to a weekly class such as ww or sw as I only like to have fresh prepared meals and I know they promote some processed foods. I also know that due to a chronic condition my tdee is lower than normal. If I consistently eat over 1200 cals I gain. I have to be around 1000 to lose. Why am I telling you this? Because if I went to a class they’d say eat this & that and 1400 cals and you’ll lose. I know I won’t as I know my own body.

I have lost over 2stone. I haven’t ‘dieted’ par se. I’ve created an eating regime that satiates and is enjoyable as well as doable for the long term.

If you try to lose it fast with faddy dieting you’ll gain it back and more besides. You’ll become a slave to yo-yo dieting.

I wish you every success. You’re in charge, boss it!

i do not weigh but since the beginning of the year I have dropped a size in jeans, and the smaller size I can now get on and off without undoing them! I need new ones. Belt is keeping them up and is three notches in from where I started in January.

Drinking less...just the one glass, don't finish the bottle
Eating much smaller portions, and stopping when I have had enough
Tending to low carb...esp no bread/pasta
Doing C25K, although I haven't even looked at my trainers for a month.

So it really does just boil down to eating less and moving more I'm afraid, even if that does seem old fashioned and not cool.

Damntheman · 02/12/2019 08:38

Smaller dinner plate, drink more water (you're often thirsty when you think you're hungry), cut alcohol. Diet will do it more than exercise but exercise def helps if you can find something you enjoy!

I'd warn against cutting out dairy. Or at least if you're going to cut dairy then make sure you're taking a calcium plus vit D supplement dairy to avoid bone density loss.

Thank you all for your help. I currently do 16:8 fasting mon-fri, used to work but not at present. I have chronic health problems but still work out by way of spinning and yoga a few times a week. Cook almost everything from scratch as like to know what is in it, downfall is alcohol, I know I need to cut it out. Nothing in my life has changed for years, apart from being menopausal, so must be that slowing down metabolism. It is comforting to know that you have done so well!

Sorry, yes normal BMI, on the upper end!

My fitness pal to track 1400 calories a day.

Lost 2 stone Smile

managedmis · 02/12/2019 17:35

LCHF

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 02/12/2019 17:37

I will say- stick at it and only weigh once a week. It took me 6 months to get 2 stone off.

Stefoscope · 02/12/2019 17:53

Low carb, low sugar has worked for me so far. Was skeptical at first, but eating smaller portions with a higher fat content does seem to satiate hunger. I've found I'm less bothered about alcohol as well since eating this way and I'm sure the beer was mostly what was causing me to pile on the pounds.

I've dropped about a stone in 2 months with having a 'cheat' carby meal or two a week. I was in the upper normal BMI range but am conscious of my metabolism slowing with age and don't want to become overweight. Will probably try to lose another half a stone to a stone then experiment with adding in a few more carby meals to hopefully maintain a healthy weight.

Singlebutmarried · 02/12/2019 17:56

@KitschBitch I’m battling a chronic illness and find the 5:2 works.

I tend to run the two days of 500 cals together, then 5 days of ‘normal’

I also stopped drinking mon - thurs.

Areyoufree · 02/12/2019 18:00

Might be worth introducing some weights. It’s actually very important as you get older, anyway. The more muscle you maintain, the easier it is to keep fat levels low (in my experience, anyway, and I am the other side of 40 now).

Jiggeriepokerie · 02/12/2019 18:44

I signed up to the body coach over a year ago. Lost almost 2 stone, re-set my eating and exercise habits and have kept it off. I really recommend it.

shinnnypin44 · 02/12/2019 18:56

I’ve recently lost 22lb doing the Fast800 and time restricted eating. I have honestly never found anything so easy to stick to and I have done slimming world on and off since my oldest was born and he’s 19!! To maintain I do 3-4 days a week on 800 and then eat pretty normally the rest of the time. I am also perimenopausal so it’s helped with that as well.

teenageanxy · 02/12/2019 18:57

Put veg/salad/fruit on your plate before anything else- pile it on, then the protein and lastly the carbs.

Every meal you eat should be 1/3 fruit/veg/salad.

WelcomeToMyWorld · 02/12/2019 18:58

Stop eating potatoes, rice and pasta. Don't eat between meals. The weight will drop off.

SheeshazAZ09 · 02/12/2019 19:00

Cut out sugar and don't eat after 7 pm. I lost several kilos just doing these things. Then I added a bit of running/fast walking a few times a week and lost another kilo.

RuffleCrow · 02/12/2019 19:02

There is something about shifting that last stone, isn't there? I lost two stone and now just want to lose about 8lb but my willpower is in shreds - i think it's the cold weather and wanting to eat more for insulation. Watching with interest.

Esme2 · 02/12/2019 19:02

Try omad I-F. I started last Monday and already down 7 pounds.

PickAChew · 02/12/2019 19:04

Different things work for different people, since nothing works if you don't stick to it. My fitness pal did the trick for me and all it really took was cutting out sugary treats. (also menopausal)

I've maintained since then, by not going back to old habits.

CFlemingSmith · 02/12/2019 19:10

Count your calories!!!
Best app is MyFitnessPal.
You'll be surprised at how many extra calories you're consuming.
Also, work out how many calories you need per day (it isn't 2000 for everyone) based on your exercise etc

AgeLikeWine · 02/12/2019 19:14

Losing weight is easy.

More lean protein & lots more veggies. Far fewer carbs. No sugar. No alcohol. 15k steps a day.

bbcessex · 02/12/2019 19:15

Lots of options for you OP 😎

I'm 51 and I've just lost over 2 stones in 12 weeks on the Six Pack Revolution.

It's a fitness, eating and mental attitude programme. I'm really enjoying it and will continue on the next 3 month phase.

I've lost 2 dress sizes, resting heart rate is back in the good zone, and I can run 5k+.

If you're up for the commitment, it's a great programme with lots of support.

Wotrewelookinat · 02/12/2019 19:19

I’m nearly 50, have been trying to lose a stone for a couple of years, looked into all the usual plans and none of them seemed right for me. Finally came across Our Path on a Facebook ad. I’m very sceptical by nature, but thought I’d give it a go and it’s been amazing. The plan is 12 weeks, with an option to continue after that. £60 with a discount code. I lost 7 kg in the first 12 weeks and it has totally changed my attitude to food, nutrition, healthy mindset and exercise. Highly recommended.

Destinesia · 02/12/2019 19:28

Work out why you have over eaten in the first place and fix that first.

Then ultimately it comes down to either eating less or burning more or a combination of both.
