and why?

Mine was being a Dominos Delivery Driver.
For some reason I LOVED it - low responsibility, loads of banter in the workplace, people absolutely LOVED you because you're bringing them pizza. It was also like a puzzle trying to work out the best routes to drop off.

I run several businesses now, and I have a lot less fun (and get a lot less free pizza)

AIBU to think the best jobs can be the crappy, low paid ones?

Worked in a supermarket when I was 15-19. LOVED it.

I’d do it again in heartbeat, if the money was better.

confusedandemployed · 01/12/2019 19:24

Loved being a receptionist in a leisure centre. Ok, parts of it were really boring but I got free membership, lots of fun with colleagues and customers and no onerous responsibilities.

chocolatespiders · 01/12/2019 19:26

Worked 5 hours in Mark's and spencer when I was 18. At that time Sunday trading had just started so it was double time on a Sunday! Work on a food till and I loved it!

Bunnybigears · 01/12/2019 19:26

I loved being a paintball marshall. Lots of fun and free kfc.

PositiveVibez · 01/12/2019 19:31

My job I have now has been my favourite.

It's heavily focussed on politics and I get to do loads of varied stuff, even though I supposed to be based in the office.

I was out canvassing last week. I get to go on various courses, my colleagues are (in the main) good to work with.

We have a laugh. Tonnes of office gossip.

Workload is good. Wages are fab, holidays are great and a final salary pension. Happy days

Worked at gap - loved it and would do shop work in a heart beat if I didn't to pay mortgage etc. Love the team work, massive discount on clothes, very structured so easy to know what to do when etc.

I want to be the person who pushes reluctant sky divers out of planes; is that a real job?

I loved working in a temping agency as a typist. I really love admin, love typing. I loved that I'd have an untidy load of paper to deal with or a full inbox of applications and by end of day it would all be dealt with, neat, tidy and filed. My job now is more complicated and I never feel satisfied that I'm making a decent dent in the work needing doing.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/12/2019 19:54

Full time job I loved - investigating allegations against teachers, really interesting and satisfying if it led to a prohibition order for someone who had been abusing pupils.

Part time job - working at festivals. Excellent craic and got to see some ace performances.

FreedomfromPE · 01/12/2019 19:58

A deli that was in a shopping centre. We got the best freebies and I learned to make their boozy tiramisu.

megletthesecond · 01/12/2019 20:01

Receptionist.
Loads of phone calls and visitors plus all the staff would come out and let off steam & gossip to me every day.

Bezalelle · 01/12/2019 20:04

I was a voice-over artist for a couple of years when I lived abroad. Bloody loved it. The money was good too.

f00k · 01/12/2019 20:09

Worked in a clothes shop for a year age 18-19. Pay was shit, the customers were the worst, we regularly had to stay late to sort out the trashed fitting rooms, but the staff were the best. The staffroom was always full of jokes and laughter and lots of cake. The boss would find any excuse to have a meeting and buy loads of snacks on expenses. We'd all regularly go to the local bar after work and all come in hungover the next day. Loads of brilliant memories from that place.

MotherHeggy · 01/12/2019 20:18

The job I have now - supervisor in a small station cafe that employs young people with additional needs. I love the freedom of being able to run my shifts my way. The staff and manager are great, customers are lovely. Very little stress.

Saturday job at WH Smith's. In the book department
I especially loved putting all the books in alphabetical order (sad but true).

Flymetothetoon · 01/12/2019 20:25

During the miners strike I was recruited to the civil service. First job typing out giros on a weird over grown typewriter that rather than paper I fed in a ream of blank giros. Four of us in the room and it was noisy as fuck but we also had the radio on in the background. I bloody loved it. Stayed in the civil service for a further 23 years but that first role was the dogs!

tobee · 01/12/2019 20:44

Worked in London theatre as a student. Occasionally, I filled in on stage door but the best fun was working the bar. Mad rush before the show, long break to gossip/watch the show, dash to put out interval drinks so ice didn't melt, mad rush interval serving, leisurely clear up/requisition.

gingajewel · 01/12/2019 20:48

Pub work when I was 16-21, I loved waitressing and then when I was 18 got to work on the bar, it was brilliant! If there was money in bar work I would never have left!

AgeLikeWine · 01/12/2019 20:55

I did bar work in town pubs as a student and I loved every minute of it. It was a fantastic laugh, we part-timers were basically paid for socialising with our mates. I was asked out at least once a night, which was great for the ego, even if the guys doing the asking were generally so pissed they would have tried to hit on the coat stand....

I later found out the hard way that working full-time in hospitality management was a total nightmare what he took over your life, but that’s a different story....

XXXXXX42 · 01/12/2019 21:04

Used to shovel poop at a riding stables. Best job ever!

louderthan · 01/12/2019 22:06

In the library and research archive at a major London museum. My job was helping researchers which was anyone from students and members of the public to leading academics and TV historians. Met loads of famous people including Stephen Spielberg.

I also got to look at and digitise endless documents, letters, diaries etc that had been donated; some of which were literally priceless because they were so unique. Letters that had been signed by prime ministers, stuff that had been classified information for many years. Amazing.

I was seconded to the installation of a major exhibition and got to physically handle many of the artefacts. The highlight was probably being asked to brush the hair of a number of Spitting Image puppets including Mrs Thatcher...!

The pay was appalling which is why I had to leave in the end but it was an amazing job and I still feel very lucky that I got to do it!

(This is very outing to anyone that knows me but never mind!)

riotlady · 01/12/2019 22:17

Worked as a TA in a special needs school. I loved messing around with the kids, getting to know them, the satisfaction of helping them learn something. They made me laugh every day.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 01/12/2019 22:23

Did a volunteering role in a geriatric hospital. Loved it. Also love my current job, lots of variety.

SnowsInWater · 01/12/2019 22:48

Running marriage preparation courses, it was so nice working with happy people (most of my work is with couples who have definitely fallen out of love!). It was fascinating hearing about their different wedding plans from the Indian couples who were going to have three day celebrations for 600 people to the couples who were getting married on the beach with a couple of mates. Was so sad when that job ended.
