To wonder why people don’t use both lanes in the petrol station?

Do people not realise that the hose reaches around to the other side so that you don’t have to wait to use the tank closest to your cap?
Or do people know this but have a reason for not doing it?
AIBU for parking on either side?

Just be thankful it wasn't diesel.

You would have had to bury your clothes.

Insideimsprinting · 02/12/2019 16:14

I have a petrol station. Entry and exit both sides, you can clearly see when one side is busy so you could drive in the other way.
People usually do manage to do this or make the hose fit.
Would you believe the biggest complaint is that people have done this and they chose to wait patiently. I find it puzzling how they find people waiting patiently so offensive!

Insideimsprinting · 02/12/2019 16:15

Haven't not have

stucknoue · 02/12/2019 16:18

Because if you have a people carrier it doesn't always reach or you have to hold it at an angle

Greatorb · 02/12/2019 18:41

@Devereux1

You don't sound like an advanced driver if you don't know how to queue at a petrol station.

Devereux1 · 02/12/2019 18:45

@Greatorb

You don't sound like an advanced driver if you don't know how to queue at a petrol station.

You really want to have a go at me don't you? OK - can you point me to the paragraph in Roadcraft, or any IAM information, which states "how to queue at a petrol station" then?

Greatorb · 02/12/2019 21:07

You really want to have a go at me don't you?

Hmm

So, when you queue at the supermarket, do you force everyone to stand behind you in the aisles until you decide which till you want, or do you just join the queue at a single till?

You don't need an advanced qualification to figure it out, just little common sense and courtesy.

JamesBlonde1 · 02/12/2019 21:21

I'm fussy about my car. I'd rather wait and not risk damaging the paint work off the rubber hose. Costs me money so I'll look after it thanks.

Devereux1 · 03/12/2019 09:28

@Greatorb

After you commented on my entire driving ability and said I didn't sound like an advanced driver because of what I described at a petrol station, I asked you if you could point me to the paragraph in Roadcraft, or any IAM information, which states "how to queue at a petrol station".

Can you do that, or not Greatorb?

flowery · 03/12/2019 09:34

”So, when you queue at the supermarket, do you force everyone to stand behind you in the aisles until you decide which till you want, or do you just join the queue at a single till?”

Why are you assuming that queuing methods used in supermarkets are the ones that should be used at petrol stations, rather than the myriad shops/post offices where there is one queue and you go to the next free checkout/counter?

Unless the petrol station is so busy that a single queue would cause disruption or inconvenience, it’s far more sensible (and usual) to wait for the next available pump. Turnover is usually such that doing this will only involve a couple of cars queuing therefore no disruption, and most people are sensible enough to notice when this wouldn’t be appropriate and pick a pump to queue behind instead.

4theanimals · 03/12/2019 10:42

I don't in case the hose scratches my car, 69 plate, but I pay at pump. So, can the hose scratch my car or not likely?

BusterTheBulldog · 03/12/2019 10:48

I get hire cars for work, all different shapes and sizes, 4x4, estates etc etc... drive all over the country. I have NEVER been at a petrol station where the hose won’t stretch over, or ever at all nearly scratched my car. Crazy that people aren’t capable of using both sides.

Alsohuman · 03/12/2019 11:16

Why does it even matter? How is someone choosing to wait longer to fill on a particular side of any interest or relevance to anyone else?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 03/12/2019 11:28

I asked you if you could point me to the paragraph in Roadcraft, or any IAM information, which states "how to queue at a petrol station".

Advanced driving isn't just about what's in IAM docs or Roadcraft though.

Because by that logic, there would be a section that says you must sit in the seat with the steering wheel, and not in the boot, in order to drive your car. Or one that tells you to put fuel in the fuel hole, not up the exhaust pipe.

Shock I'm talking about driving on planet earth. What are you talking about?

QuestionableMouse · 03/12/2019 11:33

Which one of you lot were causing chaos in Sunderland Asda filling station this morning? Nice shiny red Galaxy and no, the hose didn't reach. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Greatorb · 03/12/2019 12:33

@Devereux1

I ignored the question because it has absolutely no relevance to the discussion. Obviously there is no section of how to queue at a petrol station, just like there is no section of how to queue at a toll booth, or how to put your seatbelt on.

Like I said previously it comes down to common sense and courtesy.

@flowery

Maybe rtft? The supermarket comparison was because devereux1 said that people should queued at M&S (a supermarket) the same way they do at a petrol station.

thenightsky · 03/12/2019 12:50

I scratched the boot lid on my car stretching the hose over. It was many years ago, and I've not done it since. Now I'm old with arthritic hands and shoulders, I can't heave the damn thing over if I wanted to. I also pay in the shop so I can buy a packet of Skittles.

Devereux1 · 03/12/2019 14:42

@Greatorb
I ignored the question because it has absolutely no relevance to the discussion.

But it was you who said I didn't sound much of an advanced driver because of what I wrote about queuing at petrol stations. You. You made the link, not me. You questioned my advanced driving skills, so you obviously think it's relevant. Are advanced driving skills relevant or not Greatorb? Confused

Like I said previously it comes down to common sense and courtesy.

Can you explain precisely how queueing waiting for the next available pump in the manner I described (ie. not causing any tailback onto the road which you said originally was your objection before you suddenly switched your reason to courtesy) is lacking common sense and courtesy?

The supermarket comparison was because devereux1 said that people should queued at M&S (a supermarket) the same way they do at a petrol station.

No I didn't. I said queuing in the way I described was no different to the way we already queue in M&S. I didn't say anything about should and I didn't say anything about supermarket. I actually meant the winding queues at the long desks where we all form one queue and then go to the next available till. So what's your objection to that?

flowery · 03/12/2019 16:41

”Maybe rtft? The supermarket comparison was because devereux1 said that people should queued at M&S (a supermarket) the same way they do at a petrol station.”

Think you’re the one who should rtft. She said no such thing.

Vegena · 03/12/2019 19:20

I tried this this morning after reading the post and the pump didn't stretch!! Blush

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/12/2019 19:56

Lie!!! They all do. People on this thread have tried every petrol station in the world. And they all work. All of them.

FuzzyPigeon · 03/12/2019 21:06

I'm an IAM advanced driver and won't fill my car with the pump the wrong side. I have Avascular Necrosis and struggle to squeeze the nozzle with it the correct side, and have no chance of doing it the wrong way.

Oh, and I don't have an arrow pointing to the side of the fuel cap either.

Ginfordinner · 03/12/2019 22:44

Lie!!! They all do. People on this thread have tried every petrol station in the world. And they all work. All of them.

Grin @FlamingoAndJohn

That made me laugh out loud

maddy68 · 03/12/2019 22:44

I don't like the rubber hose resting on my car , it sometimes leaves a mark
