To wonder why people don’t use both lanes in the petrol station?

Do people not realise that the hose reaches around to the other side so that you don’t have to wait to use the tank closest to your cap?
Or do people know this but have a reason for not doing it?
AIBU for parking on either side?

There is a petrol station near me where I know the hoses don’t stretch far enough, so I always queue for the right side. They used to have signs saying this, but they disappeared.

Last week I got beeped at by a man in a 4x4 and told to “move out of the fucking way” and use the other side (it’s a tiny petrol station) at which point he very aggressively swung round me and pulled up on my left to use those pumps. Made some comments about women drivers etc. I stood at the pump for a minute after I was done and watched him try, and fail, to get the hose to stretch. He was still trying when I got in the car to leave.

He then had to admit defeat and try to get across to the other side, at which point two cars queuing behind me refused to let him cut in Grin

I bet that was satisfying LittleTopic Smile

QuestionableMouse · 03/12/2019 23:30

@Vegena Were you in Sunderland? 😂😂😂

Jenala · 04/12/2019 18:36

I parked close, pulled forward and managed to get the hose under the back of the car, it barely reached but by damn I got it in, pulled the trigger and squirted petrol all over me, shouted "FUCK!" and now smell of eau de unleaded.
I won't do it again grin

@MsMoodyMare you pulled the house under the back of the car??? No wonder it didn't reach!

BlaueLagune · 04/12/2019 18:44

I get hire cars for work, all different shapes and sizes, 4x4, estates etc etc... drive all over the country. I have NEVER been at a petrol station where the hose won’t stretch over, or ever at all nearly scratched my car. Crazy that people aren’t capable of using both sides

Hmm
brummiesue · 04/12/2019 19:36

I have a range rover, tried this once and it would not reach, so embarrassing...will not be trying again, I would rather wait!

MsMoodyMare · 04/12/2019 20:12

Jenala Grin The HOUSE?! lol well not completely under the car but around the bumper.... kind of Confused

This is another poster who has filled every car ever available in the UK with fuel and, not only that, filled all of them up at every single petrol station in the UK.

Impressive!

RunningNinja79 · 04/12/2019 20:36

Quite simply I just don't want to. Why should I? There's no law on how to fill the car up. Hmm

I do pay at the pump though (apart from the very odd occasion when I can't for some reason)

LittleTopic · 04/12/2019 20:53

@Ginfordinner it was immensely satisfying for poor clueless female driver me to watch the capable man struggle Grin

MerryDeath · 04/12/2019 20:55

because they are stupid. i am happy for people to not understand this. i actually prefer filling up on the wrong side, i use the dispenser completely upside down it's better for preventing drips.

Ginfordinner · 04/12/2019 21:20

because they are stupid

Only people too stupid to know that not every single petrol station has hoses long enough to do this would make such a ridiculous statement Hmm

IAmNotAWitch · 04/12/2019 21:28

I don't care why they don't. It significantly cuts down on my waiting time.

TriangularRatbag · 04/12/2019 21:46

OK, the only way to settle this is for those who are convinced that their petrol station has can't-reach hoses to tell us where the petrol station is, and for the rest of us to post photos of us filling our cars. We can't prove a negative.

Put up or shut up Grin

Ginfordinner · 04/12/2019 22:06

Or those posters who say they have never come across a petrol station with short hoses should try and fill their car up at every petrol station in the UK.

TriangularRatbag · 04/12/2019 22:10

Like I say, impossible (or at least highly impractical) to prove a negative! You only have to give us one postcode of one filling station @Ginfordinner and you've won Wink

Ginfordinner · 04/12/2019 22:15

It would be too outing as it is my nearest one. I will try and find another one not near home and let you know.

Jenala · 05/12/2019 14:58

Great idea @TriangularRatbag! If anyone wants me to test my big estate at one in Norfolk let me know! I can imagine the little old countryside filling stations, where the cost is 20p a litre more, and where they have only one really old fashioned pump probably don't reach. There is one near me where each lane has a pump each side. They probably don't reach as they don't need to. But yes other normal chain petrol stations I'll happily try!

@MsMoodyMare House! Ha! Yeah, that wouldn't work. Still not sure why you put the hose under the bumper though? Of course in many cases that won't work. Is that why so many people think it they don't reach? They are pulling the hose under the bumper?

Guys, you put the hose across the car. I've found a picture from Google street view. Look at the poor woman, such a struggle to make it reach..

Jenala · 05/12/2019 14:59

Hmm no pic here it is

To wonder why people don’t use both lanes in the petrol station?
MsMoodyMare · 05/12/2019 15:10

Jenala
Oooo that's a satisfying pic, nice long hose that looks no trouble, I have hose envy!
Yeah I think it was because I had this thread in my mind and felt like a clumsy cow trying to rush and not be in the way, it kept slipping down off my car.

MilaRos · 05/12/2019 15:14

I tried it once and the hose wouldn't reach, may have been a one off, but I just had to drive off embarrassed! Never do it now!

Hingeandbracket · 05/12/2019 15:20

i use the dispenser completely upside down it's better for preventing drips. You should write to the pump manufacturers pointing out how their design is wrong.
