AIBU to think Andrew Marr is rude?

Watching AM interviewing Boris this morning, he interrupts, talks over, raises his voice and won't let BJ get a word in edgeways. He's not the only one. Andrew Reid does it, Piers and Susanna do it. Why do they bother inviting guests on if they won't let them speak? AngryShock

It was terrible to watch, but Boris Johnson was lying from start, and kept not answering the questions. So it was right to interrupt, wish Marr had been firmer and not let him talk at all if he is unable to answer questions. Easy to see why he is trying to avoid Andrew Neill interview. 😡

StiltonIsLife · 01/12/2019 16:07

He was talking, but not answering the question.

DuckWillow · 01/12/2019 16:27

Johnson is a terrible interviewee who won’t answer questions . I cheer when interviewers pull the wankpuffin up on it.

ScreamingLadySutch · 01/12/2019 16:57

SO TIRED of these interviewers interrupting and trying to trip them up.
What is the point of listening? It is so broken up that none of it makes sense.

WE ARE NOT STUPID. We can make up our own minds on what we hear.

They should ask 5 questions and for the love of God, leave the politicians alone to answer.

sunglasses123 · 01/12/2019 17:22

Screaming is spot on. The interviewers DO try and trip people up. I think they like to think it makes them look superior.

It IS broken up and you remember little of what was being asked because Marr kept interupting and talking over Boris. Let Boris answer the question and then pick him up on anything not clear. Dont keep jumping in before you have barely finished the question. It makes you look silly.

That is why Neil is good. He lets his interviewees speak and then pulls them up on what was said having done a huge amount of research on the topics. Coryn made a terrible error in not knowing his subject. He didnt know what the £80k plus earners contributed. All he knew was that it was alot! And isnt he one of those earners??

The WASPI women could be his downfall. I am in a customer facing role and I spoke to two women who will be eligible for the payments. Neither wanted to be associated with the £58 billion it would cost, far rather give it to more worthy causes. And it now looks like JC and his followers did it as a bribe to buy votes, free student education, free social care, free broadband, and so it goes on

As said above they don't answer the question just sound bites and rhetoric oh and the lies.

Alsohuman · 01/12/2019 17:41

The interviewers DO try and trip people up

Of course they do, it’s their job.

I’m a Waspi woman and don’t expect to ever see that money, even if by some miracle we had a Labour government. But the 2011 changes completely screwed a lot women over, including one of my friends who’s on her knees. If my £22k materialised a lot of it would end up in her bank account because that’s the worthiest cause I know. Of course £4,400 of it would go straight back to HMRC anyway.

MaryMungoandMidgetoo · 01/12/2019 17:43

I would point out that accusations of Boris Johnson refusing to be interviewed by Andrew Neil are incorrect given that Boris said, " I’m perfectly happy to be interviewed by any interviewer called Andrew from the BBC". That seems clear to me - unless I misheard as Andrew Marr spoke over him.
Irrespective of whether you support a politician or not, it's pretty useless if an interviewer interrupts and talks over as much as Andrew Marr did. That can't have been good for Marr's career. He's probably embarrassed now.

DuckWillow · 01/12/2019 17:43

Yep Neill IS his... which is why Johnson won’t allow himself to be interviewed by him.

Alsohuman · 01/12/2019 17:47

Did you see Neil’s interview with Corbyn @MaryMungoandMidgetoo? It was far more aggressive. Marr’s trouble is he’s too polite.

MaryMungoandMidgetoo · 01/12/2019 17:55

DuckWillow - no, Boris said to Andrew Marr that he was happy to be interviewed by ANY interviewer called Andrew. He didn't say 'I've already been interviewed by someone call Andrew, and that's my lot'.

MaryMungoandMidgetoo · 01/12/2019 17:57

Alsohuman - yes, I did see the the Neil/Corbyn interview. It wasn't aggressive. He allowed Corbyn enough time to make his own rope.
Andrew Marr wouldn't let Boris reply, or let us hear the reply. If you like Boris, that is a shame as you don't hear his good statements, if you dislike him, you don't hear him say stupid things. It was a useless interview.

Alsohuman · 01/12/2019 18:03

I think we were watching different Neil interviews of you think it wasn’t aggressive. He’s notorious for being a Rottweiler.

SauvignonBlanche · 01/12/2019 18:20

It was excruciating to watch and clearly I’ll-tempered.
Marr just wasn’t go to let Johnson answer every question with “well Jeremy Corbyn would...” and wouldn’t let him get away with “I’ve only been PM for 120 days”, Johnson was clearly rattled.

refraction · 01/12/2019 18:21

I was acting shouting Go on Andrew at the TV. I needed a lie down. Smile

Aridane · 01/12/2019 18:37

Oh - and when pulled up on the Islamophobic article he wrote, he just said, oh, it was 25 years ago, who doesn't have things that embarrass the, from 25 years ago.

Surely it would have been better to make some form of muted apology, or at least say that it had been taken out of context or it was an academic reading of certain Islamic sects / passages of the Loran and as much could be said for sects etc of other religions. Or that it was a foolish article designed to be provocative and which he regrets. Or that he is not the person he was 25 years ago.

Anything but what he said

PositiveVibez · 01/12/2019 18:45

"You're completely unreasonable for calling Boris Johnson "Boris"

So agree with this statement!!! It adds into the persona he has created for himself.

Did anyone ever refer to David Cameron as 'David', or Theresa May as 'Theresa'.

No. They were talked about using their full name, or surname.

Calling Boris Johnson 'Boris', is annoying. As though he's an acquaintance, a mate, a good old, fun guy to hang out with.

Aside from that, Andrew Marr has a certain amount of time to try and get a straight answer out of Johnson, who fannies about with his waffle, so he needs to talk over him to try and get an answer to the question he actually asked!

Aridane · 01/12/2019 19:03

Jeremy Corbyn is called Jeremy ...

rosie1959 · 01/12/2019 19:10

I usually like Andrew Marr but on this interview I thought he was appalling
No point in asking a question if you are just going to talk over the answer
Perhaps he should write out the answers he wants to hear because anything else is just ignored or talked over

Alsohuman · 01/12/2019 19:13

No point in asking a question if you are just going to talk over the answer

Completely agree but he wasn’t getting any answers. It was a constant stream of “Get Brexit done” and “But Labour”.

RicePuffs · 01/12/2019 19:14

Useful fact-check here on things Johnson lies about in his interview with Marr today.

billysboy · 01/12/2019 19:15

all of these interviewers seem to think it makes them good if they are aggressive
I would have thought a good interviewer teases the truth out good or bad
Marr was awful this morning

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 01/12/2019 19:17

Johnson lied, he spoke in soundbites and he didn’t answer the question

I like both Marr and Neil

And for the cheap seats...not a corbyn fan

Was a tory voter til 2015

scousadelic · 01/12/2019 19:17

It's not just Andrew Marr, there is a whole horde of them seem to think interrupting and being rude is more important than letting the public hear any kind of an answer. I've stopped putting BBC Breakfast on each morning because of the rude harassment their lightweight presenters seem to think constitutes a reasonable interview.
Alistair Campbell made a comment recently about the time when the media switched from reporting the news to wanting to make or influence the news and I am seeing that more and more now.

Alsohuman · 01/12/2019 19:22

I’m old enough to remember John Humphreys in his prime and Jeremy Paxman, the interviewers all politicians dreaded because they were like terriers with rats and refused to be fobbed off. Now even the slightest attempt to make them answer the question that’s been asked, not the one they want to answer is deemed rude. It’s not rude, it’s interrogative journalism. It used to be respected.
