AIBU to think Andrew Marr is rude?

Watching AM interviewing Boris this morning, he interrupts, talks over, raises his voice and won't let BJ get a word in edgeways. He's not the only one. Andrew Reid does it, Piers and Susanna do it. Why do they bother inviting guests on if they won't let them speak? AngryShock

@Trewser I agree. All this 'face your public' stuff offers minimal returns, really. It's just an endless conveyer belt of platforms for them to bellow off, like a bunch of angry seagulls.

PettyContractor · 01/12/2019 11:31

On the whole I think politicians are right not to "answer the question". The interviewer sets out to be antagonistic and questions usually have a focus or premise built into them that the politician doesn't agree with. If you are going to let the questioner dictate the agenda you've lost before you start.

berringer · 01/12/2019 11:35

All Johnson did was repeat the same tired crap constantly. All narr did was not let him get away with it.

PettyContractor · 01/12/2019 11:39

Essentially an interview is not a format where genuine truth can usually emerge. The interviewers job is to beat up the politician, it's virtually impossible for the politician to prefix every reply with a forensic dissection of the premises in the question they profoundly disagree with, so it would be a disaster to simply answer questions. The only reason they go into interviews, knowing they have no hope of defeating the interviewers agenda, is because they can use the airtime to say what they want to, while ignoring the questions as much as possible. They are absolutely right to do this, if they were going to be somehow forced not to do it, then they'd quite rightly refuse to do interviews.

SwedishEdith · 01/12/2019 11:43

It was the fatberg's strategy - just keep talking. Marr started to try to control after clearly getting comments in his earpiece. Johnson didn't have "anything to say", he just wanted to not be interrogated and to be able to say he's been interviewed by the BBC. It was a transparent strategy - to me, anyway.

Singlenotsingle · 01/12/2019 11:57

Just keep talking? That's the whole point. Mr Johnson wasn't given an opportunity to talk! No wonder he's reluctant to be interviewed, or to go on Question Time. It must be so bad for his blood pressure.

I also wish the interviewers wouldn't interrupt so much, they don't actually give BJ enough rope to hang himself so it's counter-productive.

SwedishEdith · 01/12/2019 12:02

Oh, the poor lamb.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 01/12/2019 12:05

Apparently Boris Johnson shall be interviewed by Andrew Neil

Two bald men scrapping over a comb.

astralweaks · 01/12/2019 12:25

Marr is rude - can’t watch him - but Boris deserves it for being afraid to face other interview situations.

He is absolutely terrified of Andrew Neil and hid behind the sofa when the prospect of an interview with him was mooted. Rightly so. Everyone knows Boris is a blobby coward, though.

MatildeHidalgo · 01/12/2019 12:53

Oh come on - Andrew Neil is incredibly rude and aggressive - far more so than Andrew Marr.

astralweaks · 01/12/2019 15:05

Andrew Neil is an old school journo. He is very rude but no one except Boris wimped out of the interview with him. That is the point.

Alsohuman · 01/12/2019 15:11

If you are going to let the questioner dictate the agenda you've lost before you start

That’s literally what the interviewer is for. It’s called accountability.

astralweaks · 01/12/2019 15:12

👍🏻

I agree

Roussette · 01/12/2019 15:26

BoJo is a coward and should've down the Neil interview. This was Marr channelling Neil, but he's not got the same interview style.

To Bojo this interview was just a party political broadcast and he deserved to be interrupted. Especially as all he wanted to do was to blame Labour despite being in power for 9 years. I thought it was appalling to say more than once that he had only been PM for 120 days. Well... maybe he should've done something when he was Foreign Secretary or a back bencher. Weak and a coward.

Aridane · 01/12/2019 15:39

I found it somewhat excruciating when Andrew ended the interview and Boris continued regardless.

Andrew’s face was priceless with its combination of weariness, bemusement, amusement and borderline irritation and contempt

refraction · 01/12/2019 15:43

Worst NHS records in a ling time. Worst A and E times since records began.

Bojo - ' but Jeremy Corbyn'

Aridane · 01/12/2019 15:44

Apparently Boris Johnson shall be interviewed by Andrew Neil*

According to DM

Didn’t he say during this morning’s interview that he was willing to be

Aridane · 01/12/2019 15:44

Sorry- willing to be interviewed by anyone called Andrew!

Aridane · 01/12/2019 15:53

I agree, @Rousette - it was embarrassing to hear Boris disclaim responsibility as he had only had 120 days as PM when the government for 10 years has been in power!

chomalungma · 01/12/2019 16:00

Boris lied right at the start.
He lied all the way through.
He repeated his lies.
He didn't listen to the questions.
He seemed to forget that the Tories have been in power for the last 10 years.

No wonder he is running scared from a heavy weight interviewer.

KeithPartridge · 01/12/2019 16:05

How utterly embarrassing that this lying, useless man is Prime Minister of the UK. What. A. Joke. A sick one.

thefattestchip · 01/12/2019 16:06

Boris Johnson was asked to answer the questions which were put to him, but he ignored the questions and said only what he wanted to say.
Andrew Marr quite rightly pulled him up on it, but Johnson wouldn't swerve from his pre-prepared dialogue.
What is the point?
