To now prefer cats to dogs?

I grew up always having a dog (or two) in the house. But I recently acquired two mongrel cats. I love them. So clean, low maintenance, no shit in the garden to pick up. No incessant barking. No walks.

Instead I have:
Purring
Snuggles on my lap
Loving head butts
Silky soft fur
So symmetrical and pretty
Do their poos in the tray or outside

I'm definitely a cat convert.

I do love my dog but am a recent cat convert. Dog isn’t as sure about the new kitten though! 😁

Cats don’t give a shit about their owners.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Utter bullocks

HeatedDryer · 01/12/2019 08:19

Cats just know when you are feeling poorly or upset. I remember one particularly dark time when I was lying on my bed sobbing, one cat sat literally on top of me and the other one curled up next to me. Girl cat lies on DH chest right up close to his face if he's having a rest on the sofa (he works extremely long hours and has a health condition so often has a lie down to recharge) Yes they can be aloof but when you need them, they will be there.

Cornettoninja · 01/12/2019 08:21

I love dogs but they’re needy buggers, Emotionally. I can’t see me ever owning one because I just can’t give one the time and energy. My cats are happy to dawdle through life as long as they’re fed, sheltered and pampered!

Dogs are like living with a preschooler, cats are pleasant middle-aged lodgers after the kitten stage Grin

SimonJT · 01/12/2019 08:24

My lovely cat is giving my hair a good wash at the minute.

She’s my shadow, if she isn’t on my lap or shoulder she’ll be following me around. When I get home from work she’s always waiting at the door and jumps straight at me, after a cuddle she gets on my shoulder and gives my hair a good clean after being outside.

CatInTheDaytime · 01/12/2019 08:40

I love my cats! They are affectionate, and even caring - they will actively come and comfort anyone who’s upset - but it’s not that in-your face jumping all over you, smelly, licky neediness you get from dogs.

I think the aloof attitude some people think cats have is actually just that they are a species that naturally spend time alone and don’t need you all the time. I love that because I’m an introvert and find dogs’ constant neediness stressful. I respect cats’ independence but it doesn’t mean they’re unloving - we all feel so loved by ours. When the kids are at their dad’s I love having them just snoozing and snuggling around and being with me.

When things were really bad with my ex in the period before I ended it, I was dealing with a lot of gaslighting and passive aggressive crap from him - I remember being so soothed and supported by my cats’ love. Just 100% pure, soft, caring, gentle affection and straightforward mutual love with no complications. It meant a huge amount to me and got me through.

motorcyclenumptiness · 01/12/2019 09:00

YABU. Cats kill everything and crap in other people's garden with no compunction. And if Lassie had been a cat, Timmy would still be down the well. Dogs are completely brilliant.

Ticklemeelmo · 01/12/2019 09:55

Cats are the best, biggest myth out there is that they're not affectionate. Mine have always been cuddly lap cats that follow you around the house and like being stroked/ picked up

CatInTheDaytime · 01/12/2019 10:03

My cats are mostly indoor cats (access to an outside area but not free ranging), they poo in a litter tray, and they don't kill anything. A family member's dog kills all sorts including ducks! I agree that cats do cause this problem but not always, and there are ways to reduce it happening.

MrsBennetsnerves · 01/12/2019 10:21

Mine is snuggled up with me right now, purring like an engine and she insists on licking my hand the second it goes near her. She's hugely affectionate when she is near, and when she's not she's off somewhere quietly snoozing which also suits me. She doesn't bother to go out into the garden much but when she has killed it was mice in the house so I could hardly complain about that.

I've often thought about getting a dog but currently my lifestyle doesn't suit it so I'veheld off. I wonder if I would find them too needy.

CheshireChat · 01/12/2019 11:17

Our madam had an absolute tantrum yesterday because DP shaved his beard off, not quite sure why.

ForalltheSaints · 01/12/2019 11:19

I am glad to read of the OPs conversion. Though surprised that the cat hasn't noticed, as both cats and dogs are very good at knowing which one you prefer.

ClientListQueen · 01/12/2019 11:20

Mine adores me. He comes running to the door when I get home to head bop me and rub all over my legs. Gazes at me and sits guard over me when I sleep. I wake up to his paw on my arm

YANBU.

I’m a recent convert too!
Grew up with dogs, still love them, then married a man with a cat. It took her a while to warm up to me but now we’re best friends. She is also really kind to our baby!

It's so lovely to hear about your friendly and affectionate cats.

I'll admit was more or less converted by my neighbours cat before getting my own.

I find them highly entertaining too, my own cat is an absolute nutter. You never know what he's going to do next :)

Wherever I sit, my cat will sit within ear scritching range, usually on me or touching me. He's very affectionate, and a total softie. He'll only play chasing feet and fingers if they are under a blanket or duvet so he can't hurt you with his claws. He does love pushing things off my dressing table and then under my divan bed though, especially my mascara. And if I eat a kit cat I have to roll the foil into a ball for him to chase around.

ThePolishWombat · 01/12/2019 20:38

Yup.
I’m a cat person.
As long as mine is fed, nuzzled occasionally (on her terms obviously Hmm) and her crapper is cleaned when she demands, she pretty much looks after herself

SabineUndine · 01/12/2019 20:47

seren85 My cat is a licker too. He's friendly towards new people but they must not try to stroke him (he will swat their hand away) until he's had a lick at them. But it's a dry lick, not a slobbery one, like a dog's.

CheeryB · 01/12/2019 21:04

How do dog owners get used to having a smelly house?

Judging by my experiences of friends with dogs, they just get used to it and don't realise how bad it is.

JaceLancs · 01/12/2019 21:23

Dcat loves me immensely - sometimes too much!

motorcyclenumptiness "And if Lassie had been a cat, Timmy would still be down the well."

LOL, when my cat is earnestly trying to tell me something I often respond with 'Did you put Timmy in the well again?'.

I like that she is an independent bitch, it matches my personality perfectly. We often sit on the lounge together, judging everyone else.

I don't know if animals (dogs or cats) "love" in the way that humans describe the emotion, but she seems to like us, and is usually found within stroking distance.

narcissistseverywhere · 02/12/2019 23:05

YABU, I'm a recent convert to dogs, my three cats:

Whining for food..... all day long
Throwing up on a regular basis, the delight of fur balls in summer
Fleas, fleas and more fleas
Peeing at the front door when it's raining
One of them highly temperamental and liable to lash out
piles of poop in front of the shed

I am a cat lover really, but these three have driven me to distraction (my dog is easy in comparison)

Hecateh · 02/12/2019 23:12

Having read the full thread have only found 2 people saying YABU. May have missed a couple but overwhelmingly people (other posts are available) agree YANBU and I would agree.

Dogs are too needy for me.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 02/12/2019 23:26

I’m a cat convert too! Always been a dog person then my son begged for a kitten, he was/is so awesome he totally coverted me, within a month we had 3 more! Shock I love my dog but my cats are definately a lot less hassle (when they’re not shredding my wallpaper and trying to murder each other!)
