Seen lots of mentions on here of people saying they clean bathrooms/kitchens every day and hoover all the floors. Several people saying that they don’t have time to go out because they are busy keeping the house clean after work etc.
I’m feeling like a right mucky cow now! I wipe the kitchen down after I’ve cooked and put a bit of bleach in the loos each morning but the rest gets done once a week (usually!)
DH hoovers once a week while I’m out with my friend and we go out most nights as we run choirs/drama groups.
Am in in the minority here?

My approach is that if I were to have someone pop around uninvited and unexpectedly - I would feel proud and happy with state of house (not that I have any friends that would be inconsiderate like that!)

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/11/2019 03:36

Not as much as i should, I work nights and have 2 dogs. I clean when i have to, dont have many people come to the house.

MitziK · 30/11/2019 03:37

Every fucking Saturday morning.

I'm not sleeping (something to do with the prospect of his bloody mother coming to stay on Monday, I reckon), so I'm going to start at 6am. I'll be done sooner that way. I'm going to have a bath now, then a coffee and I'll get started shortly before his alarm goes off for work.

ivfbabymomma1 · 30/11/2019 03:40

We clean as we go and then do a decent clean once a week, change sheets once a week etc

BillHadersNewWife · 30/11/2019 04:05

My sister hoovers and mops every day! I have a big house, full of hard floors...all floorboards in every room.

I mop twice a week tops!

I do the kitchen daily...have to because it's manky otherwise. Bathroom about every other day,.

ScotsinOz · 30/11/2019 04:41

I have 2 cleaners in for 6 hours time, twice a week. They clean everything (including moving furniture to vacuum and mop under it) and change bedsheets weekly. I clean the kitchen everytime I use it (so rinse dishes, dishes in dishwasher, clean benchtops, hot plates, etc) - I can’t imagine not tidying up and cleaning the kitchen after using it. If I think the floor needs a quick sweep or vacuum inbetween my cleaners days I’ll do it (mainly if I see crumbs from the children snacking). I keep bleach wipes in all the bathrooms for wiping around the sink and benchtops in the bathrooms to clean after getting ready in the morning/to go out at night (though it’s mainly me making mess with make up). That way it stays relatively clean.

Preggosaurus9 · 30/11/2019 04:54

Sounds normal OP!

I try to keep the kitchen, bathroom and lounge tidy (put away toys) daily. Floors get done once a week or less. Probably wipe down bathroom more frequently when I can see dust! Other bits of cleaning get done when they are noticably needed.

Would like house to be more spotless but cba spending my life cleaning!

Megan2018 · 30/11/2019 05:00

Cleaner comes weekly and does whole house, we do very little in between unless have guests. Life is too short to be constantly cleaning (and we are used to the cat hair).
When our HV visited I was slightly worried, but she said some germs are good for babies, don’t over clean. I love her Grin

Shooturlocalmethdealer · 30/11/2019 05:05

I clean from the time I get out of bed until I go back to bed. Have done since I was 18. I'm 43 and run ragged.

BiteyShark · 30/11/2019 05:07

Items tidied as needed e.g. we don't let rooms get in a 'mess' as things are put away and not just left lying about.

Hoover of floors as needed e.g. if dog has made a mess eating on the floor those patches get done.

Clean kitchen surfaces after cooking.

Light hoover of some floors (those that get the footfall) once a week.

Complete clean of all rooms and bathrooms every 2 weeks. This takes me about 4 hours but I literally race round at a fast speed.

Spring clean (windows, move furniture) around 3-4 times a year.

Both of us work full time. If I didn't work I could easily make housework a full time job and I suspect the people that clean all the time are doing just that. For example I properly clean my bathroom taps when limescale starts to build up. I could do that every few days so they sparkled and had no water marks if I had nothing better to do. The same with mopping the kitchen floor. Every week is enough to keep it hygienic but I could do it daily if I needed to fill time.

I used to have a cleaner and the company said every 2 weeks was plenty (I had thought weekly but they said it was excessive as my house is tidy so maintenance cleans in between would be enough.)

speakout · 30/11/2019 05:15

I clean when it looks or feels dirty.
Kitchen surfaces and sinks daily, kitchen/hallway swept daily, only because I can see dust and crumbs.
Toilet and batroom get cleaned when they seem grubby, a quick spray and wipe every couple of days, deep clean once a fortnight.

DamnitCharlie · 30/11/2019 05:16

2 adults and a toddler, I try and keep the place tidy daily - do a load of washing and do the dishes, wipe the kitchen and table down after meals and sweep under the table. That's it daily! At the weekend my partner and I will try and clean the bathrooms, Hoover, mop and wash bedding and towels but even that turns into fortnightly sometimes!

Life is too short, especially with children even though they make the house dirtier! I just have to accept my standards have to be lower for a few years.

DamnitCharlie · 30/11/2019 05:21

@ScotsinOz that is a lot of cleaning hours! Do you have a large house or lots of children? Only because I used to clean 5 star cottages and 6 hours was the amount of time for one cleaner to do two cottages once a week to a very high standard.

OpheliaBee · 30/11/2019 05:41

have 2 cleaners in for 6 hours time, twice a week

Do you live in a mansion with a pack of wild dogs or something? Literally the only way that I can see this would be necessary...

Legomadx2 · 30/11/2019 05:57

Cleaner comes once a week for five hours.

I use our dyson handheld everyday for eg the stairs or patches of mud from rugby boots.

I use detrol wipes over the kitchen table and surfaces after every meal.

Legomadx2 · 30/11/2019 05:58

And I mop the floor (kitchen and hall) twice a week so it gets done three times a week incl cleaner.

darkriver19886 · 30/11/2019 06:00

Honestly, not enough. I hate it but, when my mental health gets the better of me the last thing I feel like doing is tidying. I love alone so at least I don't have to worry that much.

PixieDustt · 30/11/2019 06:01

Everyday and a 'deep' clean every week.
Towels and bedding get washed and changed weekly.
Skirting boards and highs done weekly. I clean the inside of my windows weekly.
Oven cleaned weekly as well as fridge/freezer.

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 30/11/2019 06:05

Our cleaner comes once a fortnight.
We clean down the kitchen each evening after dinner/DH does while I put DS to bed. I more or less keep on top of washing/putting away/beds/towels with occasional catching up on a few washes at the weekend.
I'd love a permanently spotless house, but we both work full time and have a DC with another on the way. I'm asleep by 8.30-9 every night and have no intention to spend my short evenings cleaning rather than with DC/DH. I also can't really justify our cleaner weekly as much as I would love to 😄 MIL will just have to stop disapproving of our house

christmasathome · 30/11/2019 06:51

Same as you op. Big clean usually on a Friday eve or Saturday then just a bit of maintenance during the week which is is usually as you say, wipe down of kitchen sides, dishes and a sweep of the floor (which i often just sweep into the corner if I can't immediately find the dust pan and brush 😳)

Maneandfeathers · 30/11/2019 07:15

I hoover most days, mop daily, clean kitchen daily.
Bathroom probably about 3x week with toilet done most days.
At the weekend we generally do a deep clean.

We are a family of muddy outdoor people with two big dirty dogs and two cats though. If we left it days it would be a case for how clean is your house Blush

UncleHerbie · 30/11/2019 07:24

There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse ... Quentin Crisp 🤔🤣🤔

ScotsinOz · 30/11/2019 07:33

@DamnitCharlie and @OpheliaBee. I have 9 year old twins, a husband and I do have a massive house. My cleaners do everything, including vacuuming and wiping down skirts and door/window frames and cleaning out fridge and ovens every single week. I have a separate window cleaner who comes in once a month (I would prefer fortnightly, but he costs a fortune) and a man who “deep cleans” the ovens, cooktops, extractor fans and bbq kitchen every three months. I like it clean and tidy and I can afford it. If I couldn’t afford it or didn’t mind it as tidy then I wouldn’t be paying for it. This is fairly standard where I live, though I know a few people who have fulltime housekeepers.
