We’re having a new kitchen installed soon and after looking about online and in brochures I’m felling rather overwhelmed with all the appliances and extras we can have.
So if you could recommend one thing for a new kitchen what would it be? Any tips or tricks you could share too?
TIA

Deep pan drawers, induction job , side by side interstates fridge freezer. An island if space allows .

BarbaraofSeville · 29/11/2019 10:22

Self cleaning ovens. Agree about the deep pan drawers. All our base units are large drawers split 50/50 and it's life changing.

We also have shallow hidden drawers inside some of the units, which are good for spices, medicines etc.

We have no wall units but then have a full wall full of full height shallow units, which contain food, crockery, small appliances, bulk buy stocks of things like coffee, petfood, alcohol etc.

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 29/11/2019 10:23

Ovens with timers, not sure if this is standard on all ovens now but I used to constantly burn food.
Mine also means I can set it to come on at a specific time. Lovely to come back from a freezing cold football match to roast chicken and veg.

Dishwasher, separate hob and wall-mounted oven. Pan drawers under the hob. Pull-out larder cupboard.

We had a new kitchen installed last week (the tiler is in right now, flooring goes down Monday).

I got these for my corner unit so I can access the full space

eastcoastkitchens.co.uk/kitchen-storage-accessories/3314-peka-1200mm-unit600mm-non-slip-fluid-corner-door-storage-shelving.html

And built in bins under the sink.

Also a six ring gas burner (though that's very much a personal preference thing as I do cook a lot) with drawers underneath and separate, built in double oven so the grill is at eye level, and a full sized floor to ceiling larder, which I could fit all our non-fridge/freezer food in.

The other thing we did, which I can't recommend enough (though is pretty specific) is have a breakfast bar installed over the radiator, with half sized cupboards underneath to support it, and a vent in it above the radiator to allow heat to rise to the ceiling pulley above. I wanted to ensure I didn't lose the pulley as it is the best thing since sliced bread but I also wanted to workspace/breakfast bar and this solution has worked really well for us.

Pan drawers were something I’d looked at as ours are stacked in a cupboard and it’s a pain to get one out, so that’s a big fat yes.
I didn’t think about self cleaning ovens but that’s something I’ll definitely have a look at.
We are having a peninsula kitchen rather than an island but it will have seating for 4 people at it.

Side opening oven doors or drop and hide. The ergonomics of dealing with a full casserole at arms stretch over a drop down oven door is dreadful, I think. I love my side openers.

We also got a full oven and a half size. The half size gets used all the time as it uses so much less power.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 29/11/2019 11:41

Frost-free freezer. I have one that is, and two that aren't, and I know which I prefer!

We have something similar to what @ArnoldWhatshisknickers linked to and although I was really excited at first I know hate them, as it's really difficult to clean underneath and behind them (though tbf ours don't pull out as much as those in the link).

GiBlues · 29/11/2019 11:42

Those corner cupboards look pretty good too arnold
Ooooh I hadn’t thought about the oven door thesandgroper thanks!

Boiling water tap - never thought I needed one, wouldn’t be without it now!

DustyD2 · 29/11/2019 12:08

A bin drawer with separate bins for rubbish, recycling etc. And deep pan drawers.

SpoonBlender · 29/11/2019 12:35

Totally yes for bin drawer and deep pan drawers. They are the best.

lanthanum · 29/11/2019 12:55

Boiling water tap - I met someone who said it was the thing they regretted. They hadn't realised that the filter would need replacing (at a fair cost), and as they weren't using it much in the end they didn't bother. If you work from home and drink a lot of hot drinks it's probably different, though, so think how much you'd use it (and check out the ongoing costs).

BarbaraofSeville · 29/11/2019 13:08

I've never wanted a boiling water tap, because they seem ludicrously expensive and the ones I've seen, the water flow seems quite slow and I'd rather boil the kettle if I wanted a panful of water or to make tea in the big teapot, which we do several times a day.

I would also be concerned that it's not properly boiling, like the hot water boiler at work, which then makes shit tea.

DrIrisFenby · 29/11/2019 13:14

Lighting directly over the sink so that you can see what you're washing up! In fact, zonal lighting so you can alter the mood - we have three switches: 1 does pendant lights over table, 1 does under unit downlighting and 1 does the main ceiling spots. When you're eating you can turn main spots off for a softer glow.

And if you're also considering under floor heating, learn from my mistakes. Think about where your bin will go first because otherwise the bin gets warm and stinky very quickly...Blush

FrogFairy · 29/11/2019 13:34

@TheSandgroper please could you share a wee linky to your ovens?
I want side opening doors and love the idea of a half size oven.
Apologies to OP for hijacking.

Things I plan for my kitchen, lots of drawers, plus lots of the internal storage bits sold in Ikea. A large single bowl sink and a spray tap.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/11/2019 14:00

Sockets lots. Never enough.

Where will you plug everything in?

Hotseat · 29/11/2019 14:21

A butler and maid.Grin

LilouBlue · 29/11/2019 14:28

I viewed a (rental) house a couple of weeks ago where the landlord had lived in it as the family home, so redid the kitchen from scratch. It was the PERFECT kitchen. The oven was self cleaning, it had a lovely island/breakfast bar, and everything was where you would "expect" it to be, if that makes sense. My favourite thing though was the bin storage. A deep drawer where the food waste caddy goes, under a (sealable) hole in the work top so you can just scrape vegetable peel etc into it. Then the paper recycling thing next to it. It was honestly a thing of wonder.
My food waste caddy is under the kitchen sink currently, which is fine but the plumbing for the dishwasher is right next to it. Warm, stinky rubbish...

LilouBlue · 29/11/2019 14:29

Oh yes a spray tap too! They're brilliant. And I'd love a double sink, so I could have washing up soaking in the sink, and still have somewhere to rinse the cloth I'm using to clean the worktops...

LakieLady · 29/11/2019 14:36

I've never wanted a boiling water tap, because they seem ludicrously expensive

I felt the same, until I went on a training course where they had one. It was bloody brilliant, really easy to use but safe, and the water was actually boiling. I'm very fussy about my tea, and the water was at the perfect temperature for tea-making.

I think they're fab now and really want one. And if they're a couple of hundred more than an ordinary tap, that's not a huge amount when you think of the cost of the whole kitchen.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/11/2019 14:53

Well it says here that the Quooker ones, which are the only ones that produce water at 100 C, or did when our kitchen was installed a few years ago, cost £1-3k Shock and my perfectly decent tap from Ikea cost £75.

I got 2 fancy self cleaning AEG ovens for less than the cost of the cheapest boiling water tap in that link.

filka · 29/11/2019 14:56

I always fancied an InSinkerator to get rid of waste
www.screwfix.com/p/insinkerator-model-66-ise-m-series-food-waste-disposer/43022#product_additional_details_container

I'd second the self-cleaning oven, we have one at our overseas home but in our newbuild house in the UK the developers were cheapskates, it's a PITA to clean with very horrible chemicals.

And an induction hob - boils amazingly quickly then simmers at a very low setting.

TheDogsMother · 29/11/2019 14:58

Deep pan drawers, induction job, slide and hide oven, spice drawer, bin drawer, larder cupboard

TheDogsMother · 29/11/2019 14:59

Oh yes definitely a self cleaning oven which the slide and hide one is
