DD wants one of these carriages she has seen on YouTube, they cost £1200!! DD is 5 and she fully believes in Santa. How on earth do I distract her from wanting this or manage her expectations???

My youngest asked Father Christmas for a unicorn last year...

19lottie82 · 28/11/2019 21:04

£1200 for that????? Confused

Trebla · 28/11/2019 21:05

Am I the only one horrified at the plastic commercialized shit that is still being gifted despite us heading full in into a climate abyss. My children's future on this planet shouldn't be at risk due to others need to buy plastic tat to show their love at a socially constructed celebration.

Do something daring like give your time to those in need, buy memories not stuff. It breaks my heart attitudes aren't changing quickly enough.

friedbeansandcheese · 28/11/2019 21:05

Well, @BooHaa, you’ll have to manage her expectations.

Tell her that Santa doesn’t have room on his sleigh for huge presents, ask where in the house there’s room to keep it, say it’s very very expensive and You could buy a real car for that money, and say that Santa doesn’t buy everything on a Christmas list! That will not kill the magic, for goodness sake! Hmm

19lottie82 · 28/11/2019 21:05

Could you write her a letter from Santa, explaining that he can’t fit it in his sleigh, or something like that?

greenlobster · 28/11/2019 21:07
Shock

Just get her a disney princess bike and tell her Santa believes it's important for kids to be healthy or something.

BooHaa · 28/11/2019 21:09

I'd love to know if anyone can tell me where I could purchase it in the UK for less than £500. Not that I expect DH would go for it Grin

@PixieDustt

"Where's she going to go in it? Narnia? Windsor Castle?

Ffs, she's 5 get a grip and stop being sarcastic.

That carriage OP isn't £1,200 it's actually about £300.

Maybe Santa can write your DD a letter and explain that unfortunately what DD has asked for is too big to fit down any chimney but he will be sure to get his elf's to make an extra special present just for her so she will not be disappointed.

She's not a brat, she's 5, believes in Santa and has no concept of money hmm"

That is such a lovely idea, definitely feeling better about this situation! Thinking about the other ride-ons as a possibility. She will know the difference but it probably wouldn't matter (until next Xmas when she wants the £1200 one again Grin)

We've always had a 'write whatever you would like on your list' approach. They knew that if they were lucky they'd get something from the list, or Father Christmas might choose something else that they'd like.

That meant that although chances are they'll get a lot of the list, but no disappointment when they've asked for things that don't exist, or for piglets .....

Sksksksk · 28/11/2019 21:09

Tell her the reindeer would get hernias if they had to shlep huge toys like that all the way from the North Pole. Santa has a weight restriction (which is even stingier than Ryan Airs ) for toys so that the reindeer can keep the sleigh airborne.

BooHaa · 28/11/2019 21:11

@greenlobster

Haha love that winging it approach Grin

Santa only does stocking presents here. The children have never questioned it. Santa can't bring expensive presents for every child. Even he has limits!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 28/11/2019 21:11

This is why you shouldn't let 5 year olds watch youtube/tv channels with advertising on, without a ton of supervision so you can block the screen or fast forward so that they are not exposed to this stuff.

Its on thing when a child sees relatively expensive but common items that their peers have (micro scooters etc) and wants one, but no one has a £1,200 disney carriage overpriced piece of tacky junk. Your 5 year old shouldn't know it exists. Tell her its just a picture like in a film and not available for ordinary people to own.

Nonnymum · 28/11/2019 21:12

We always said the big presents were from us, family presents from family and the stocking that was at the bottom of their bed with little gifts on it was from father Christmas. So they were able to understand people had put a lot of effort into buying them things.

Whattodoabout · 28/11/2019 21:12

That is ghastly.

Just tell her Santa has a budget and that far exceeds it.

BooHaa · 28/11/2019 21:13

@Sksksksk

She'd probably spend the rest of the festive period asking me if I'm sure the sleigh won't be too heavy for the reindeer Grin bless her she will worry for them if I give her cause to!

OP posts:
missmouse101 · 28/11/2019 21:13

Father Christmas brings a stocking to go on the end of the bed with little bits in. All the other presents are from family/friends etc and have their gift tags on. You say that you can't afford it, that's all.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/11/2019 21:15

Just get Santa to write back.

"Dear Dd, I don't normally write back as I have so so many children's letters to read, but I wanted to write back to you.
That is every such a beautiful princess carriage, and it looks fun, but it is simply too big to fit into my sleigh. Also, mummy and daddy do have to pay for your present and it's so many pounds that they wouldn't have enough to take you to [insert a couple of fave places she likes to go] any more as it would use up all of their money.
I know you have some Barbies, so I have shown the design to my Head Elf who has said he can make a perfect copy for your Barbies which would definitely fit into my sleigh and also leave lots of money for your favourite days out.
I am sure that you and your Barbies would have a lot of fun playing with it, and it would be an extra special toy designed just for you - the only one ever made! If you think this is something you would like, sprinkle some glitter on your front step tonight and I will see your message and set the Head Elf to work.
Don't forget my cookie on Christmas eve!
Love Santa"

pooboobsleeprepeat · 28/11/2019 21:15

You tube is your problem here. Do you supervise her while she’s watching videos? YouTube is absolutely awful and I will not let my children go on it for as long as possible.

BooHaa · 28/11/2019 21:16

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

It's not actually off an ad, we use YouTube Kids and it's some children from a show that have one.

MutedUser · 28/11/2019 21:20

It’s best to manage the expectations now and not buy it OP. Or what will you do when she puts iPad and iPhone on her list at 7 or 9.

be47 · 28/11/2019 21:20

OP, if it's a US product it doesn't matter if you can get it delivered to the UK, it'll probably be fried by the electrics here anyway! Don't waste your money on something that'll break the minute you plug it in and/or require you buy an expensive transformer.

Trebla · 28/11/2019 21:20

That's an ad.

Those kids were paid to play with it to expose it to kids like yours.

That's how youtubers make money
