To ask how you can live with yourself if you use Amazon

Just kidding! All those political threads asking how people can possibly vote for X or Y must be getting to me.

I use Amazon. (While I’m frequently ordering from a vendor rather than Amazon themselves, Bezos still gets his cut.) Yet, the more I read about them, the more I realise I’m part of the problem. So I guess my question is, do you have stern words with yourself for using them, but keep doing it anyway?

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 27/11/2019 12:31

Having read yesterday about their treatment of their workers, I'm not willing to use them any more.

Wholewheelofbrie · 27/11/2019 12:32

I resisted for a looong time but I became so time poor after the birth of DC that it really is/was a lifesaver. I also find the service of a lot of the retailers I used to use has declined so dramatically in recent years whilst Amazon’s has increased (I know their delivery drivers can be a bit shit tho). For example yesterday realised we were running out of a few bits only boots.com (and amazon do) went on Boots and despite still advertising that if you order into store by 6pm you can pick things up the following after 12 the following day they were only letting me choose from this Friday onwards - 2 days later. Not going into town Fri. Checked on Amazon and they were both on 1 day, so Prime it was.

There was something else last week (can’t actually remember but a decent sized retailer) where it wanted me to create an acc no PayPal option and 5-7 business day or pay 8 quid for next day. Looked on amazon and one clicked away, here two days later.

Bluelightdistrict · 27/11/2019 12:32

I get minimum one thing delivered per day.
It's convenient and quick.

easyandy101 · 27/11/2019 12:34

I don't use them and never have Halo

But in reality it's cos i don't buy stuff online, rather than a principle. Someone bought me something off prime once and i was more than happy to get it so cheap

BrickTop999 · 27/11/2019 12:38

I hate Amazon after a terrible HOME SERVICES service ( or lack of it !) been arguing now over £85 refund. Ive spent thousands with them over the years, but now Im making more of an effort to use other sellers

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 27/11/2019 12:38

I don’t use them.

I order from other companies, many exist you don’t have to order form them if you don’t wish. It’s easy to not use them, it’s not like they sell stuff that nobody else sells

Can you polish my halo now?? 😇

I can see why people use it though it’s a big name, people want fast delivery from the touch of a button. It’s just easy for people isn’t it to think oh I need dog biscuits, a unicorn lampshade oh I’ll use amazon as it’s the name they know but truth is better deals are else where they can’t be bothered to search for nothing wrong with that but it’s the lazy factor amazon rely on

theEnglishInPatient · 27/11/2019 12:38

I compare prices and convenience, and when Amazon wins, I order with them.

I don't believe anyone dreamt of being a warehouse worker when they were little, but they give jobs to people who need them - and are free to leave and work somewhere else. If they don't, it's thanks to Amazon who at least offer something

No issue with using Amazon. When I find cheaper elsewhere, I buy elsewhere.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/11/2019 12:39

I use amazon because it is just quick and convenient. However i am so aware that in reality we simply need to buy less crap, wherever we buy it from

ladyofearlybedtimes · 27/11/2019 12:39

Generally if I can buy it in a supermarket i'll get what I need in my shop, but everything else I need I tend to go Amazon first and I use it a lot. I work five days a week, i'm a single parent being screwed by UC and I just don't have the time or money to always being looking at my high-street shops. The nearest shopping centre is 30 mins drive for me and I probably go once a month and will pick up what I need when out, but Amazon serves a purpose in between.

PhoneLock · 27/11/2019 12:39

I use it a lot. We live aurally and going into town just takes too much time and petrol. Going into a town that stocks the variety of goods that Amazon does, takes all day and even more petrol.

I'll turn a blind eye to their tax situation because doing so means I can get on with the things that are more important in my life than traipsing around shops or sit searching the internet for alternative suppliers willing to deliver the next (or same) day.

Clangus00 · 27/11/2019 12:40

I don't give it a thought.

Greatorb · 27/11/2019 12:42

I refuse to shop locally as I live in a very strong leave voting town. Amazon helps me achieve this.

PhoneLock · 27/11/2019 12:42

rurally not aurally!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/11/2019 12:42

We use Amazon a lot. I read on Kindle, and it’s handy for bulky things like cat litter. I do find prices massively cheaper - I take a supplement thing which I was buying in the local health food shop at £22, whereas on Amazon the exact same (Solgar branded) product is £14. I can see all the arguments for not shopping with them, but the convenience and cost factor means we continue to.

Rinoachicken · 27/11/2019 12:43

Just for info - the plastic air pocket packaging is recyclable - like bubble wrap

Fere · 27/11/2019 12:43

Amazon doesn't make money on the shop front we all use.
Their income comes from the cloud technology which is used by many companies we are using, not banking but anything else what runs any cloud based applications is using one of few big players. It may even be Mumsnet, who knows.

One day Amazon as we know it will disappear and the company will only do the cloud management of other companies data.

AngryPrincess · 27/11/2019 12:43

I use Ebay. And Wordery's terrific for books. Free delivery and Christmas bookmarks too.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 27/11/2019 12:43

Have Amazon prime and have been using Amazon for years, for the convenience, price and sheer availability of a wide range of products. I try to use the local high street as well, but frankly if my local council really want to keep the town centre alive they need to make parking easier and cheaper and reduce business rates.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 27/11/2019 12:45

No. I use Amazon Prime which is good but not what I love most about my Amazon Subscription.

Prime photos have been a life saver when I lost my phone. And I've even paid extra to extend the video storage.

Prime Video is brilliant and I use it every night in bed and Alexa is almost in every room in our house.

I love the kindle (although I only use the app version on my phone now)

No company is golden. I am not going to wrap myself in despair.

RingtheBells · 27/11/2019 12:48

I use Amazon and eBay lots, the shops don't usually stock what I want.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/11/2019 12:48

I've gone off Amazon rather in recent years. Back when they started their books were always really competitively priced. Now I'm finding I can get better deals elsewhere.

Allegorical · 27/11/2019 12:49

I do feel bad but I work part time and have three kids under 6, the eldest of which just cannot cope with going into any shops!! I only use for random stuff and try to buy from other online shops to spread the love. Would never buy clothes from there. When the kids are all older I hope to use shops more again if there are still any. I miss the pleasure of spending the day shopping. I don’t know why young, childless people don’t do that as much anymore.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 27/11/2019 12:49

I'm having a real struggle feeding 1 week old DS and amazon let me order a decent breast pump with same day delivery so that when I get out of hospital I can keep expressing for him.

RedPanda2 · 27/11/2019 12:49

Yes, and Sports Direct. I feel bad for 10 minutes and then carry on living my life. I am definitely part of the problem but I need my cheap things!!!

theEnglishInPatient · 27/11/2019 12:49

Amazon doesn't make money on the shop front we all use.

of course they do, see the price system in place for Amazon sellers, Amazon does a lot better than breaking even.
