Outskirts of London...help!

Posting here as I don't know where to put it!!

We're taking our DS to London soon and we plan to do all of the main tourist attractions.

We're travelling from the Midlands and ideally will go by train. Staying in be central London is so expensive so we were hoping to find somewhere on the outskirts that still had easy access.

We need to get a train directly there from the midlands and it also needs to have easy links into the city centre.... can anyone advise please?

Take a look at the map for the premier Inn. They are often loads cheaper just a few miles out of central London bit still convenient for the tube. (Although been often stay at the Docklands one as right on the DLR bit a quiet location).

Vinorosso74 · 26/11/2019 10:15

Not sure on pricing but there is a Premier Inn right beside Archway tube station. I assume you'll be coming into Euston or Kings Cross? You can easily get there on the Northern Line or a 390 bus.
It's quick and easy to get into central London from there.
There is a Travelodge on the main street in Wood Green a few minutes from the tube but to be honest it's not the most pleasant location.

The Midlands is a big place! Can you check which line / destination station you will be coming in on?

Unicornhamster · 26/11/2019 10:17

You might struggle to get a train directly to the place you want to stay from Midlands. When I travel home by train it’s always from Euston. If you don’t mind another train ride after Euston you could stay somewhere like Hampton Court, it has a few cheaper hotels around it and you can do the palace and bushy park etc if you wanted. Train station is just over the bridge.
Or else you might want to stay on a tube line and get a hotel somewhere like Wimbledon which would be easier from Euston initially.

Greenwich or Docklands.

Travelodge Greenwich High Road from £57.99 for two adults and a child.

Librocubicularist · 26/11/2019 10:22

You can take a Thameslink train directly from St Pancras to Greenwich.

beguilingeyes · 26/11/2019 10:22

Walthamstow has a Travelodge right next to the tube station (Walthamstow Central) which is a direct ride from Euston or Kings Cross. Good transport links everywhere and lots of facilities nearby.

edwinbear · 26/11/2019 10:22

Premier Inn Lewisham is also c. £60 a night. Right next to Lewisham station which is 20 mins direct into Charing Cross.

Premier inn in Covent Garden is a great location and good price. But book in advance

ballsdeep · 26/11/2019 10:29

We stayed in the Premier Inn Tower Bridge. Tbh I found that quite far away from the centre and ended up getting ubers everywhere. It was about 150 a night.

Ariela · 26/11/2019 10:29

I'd do Premier Inn Greenwich, so you can do the Greenwich dock stuff & Cutty Sark.
You could do a boat trip from Greenwich to Westminster which is a great way to spot all the sights from the river.

BlingLoving · 26/11/2019 10:32

You should check Premier Inns in central london. They are often surprisingly inexpensive. The one near Waterloo/South Bank is popular with a lot of people I know.

Pinkflipflop85 · 26/11/2019 10:32

I would stay in greenwich. Lots of lovely things to do there and good transport links into central.

Mrscog · 26/11/2019 10:35

My hot tip is premier inn Uxbridge - free parking and just off M40, then get up early to kiss traffic or go after rush hour and just drive to Shepherd’s Bush Westfield (25mins) and park all day for about £10. Then pick up the central line from there. Or you can get the tube from Uxbridge but it takes an hour.

Mrscog · 26/11/2019 10:36

Just to add we were able book the Uxbridge premier inn for £45 per night!

The downside is it’s too far out to go back during the day so you need the stamina for a full day out!

Mrscog · 26/11/2019 10:37

Sorry I totally just missed that you were definitely going by train! I’m
Midlands based too and that’s our driving routine when we can get train travel for less than £200

SouthwarkSkaters · 26/11/2019 10:50

Last time I went to London we stayed in the premier inn by the London Eye, it was less than £100 for the family room and it saved us loads of (travelling) time. There are a couple others nearby even cheaper but we chose this one as DD (10) and I were going to a concert at the Southbank Centre and this was the closest/easiest to walk to afterwards.

Librocubicularist · 26/11/2019 12:01

Depending where you are in the Midlands, look at Megabus for cheaper train tickets. The tickets are cheap for specific times and days (none on a Sunday). You could get a single from Nottingham to St Pancras for £17.

theatrenerd31 · 26/11/2019 14:37

We stayed at the travel lodge at North Acton. The area wasn't anything to talk about, but it's a 5 minute walk from the tube and was relatively inexpensive. Hotel was lovely and staff friendly :)

FizzyIce · 26/11/2019 14:39

There’s a Travelodge in Northolt just opposite the central line station so can be in Bond Street in about 20 mins .
There’s a harvester next door too

HopefullyAnonymous · 26/11/2019 15:18

Wembley? Straight on the metropolitan line from Euston Square, and also on the jubilee line to get you back into central London?

SleepingIsOverrated · 26/11/2019 16:05

ThighThighOfthigh · 26/11/2019 16:09

What's your nightly budget and would it be for a family room for 2 adults and a child?

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/11/2019 16:11

We're west mids So will you be coming into Paddington? (Worcs/Glos) or Euston (Birmingham/Staffs)?

Velveteenfruitbowl · 26/11/2019 16:12

I would rate Airbnb for London. You can find really nice properties for a low price.
