Either ice the cake or don't. Prefereably ice the whole damn thing with lashings of buttercream.
Naked cakes just don't look finished.

I don't think there is anything more disappointing, food-wise, than a bad tasting cake. What a waste of calories.

Amen to that. I refuse shop bought cake - how depressing is it to see that the measly tiny serving size gives you 350 cals and tastes like synthetic shit?

I don’t like fondant our royal icing, but I love ganache and buttercream.

My wedding 'cake' was a chocolate digestive base, layered with oreos, chocolate ganache, a layer of salted caramel, with a buttercream icing coated in cocoa powder. Decorated with chocolate shapes, obviously.

It was immense.

Megan2018 · 26/11/2019 10:28

I love them, hate icing. Horses for courses!

Camomila · 26/11/2019 10:30

We had one, covered in fresh fruit (and flowers). It was lovely, but I really like fruit and don't like icing.

And it was cheap! Presumably because no fiddly icing work.

ClaraThePigeon · 26/11/2019 10:31

They look beautiful. People are being very rude.

No they're just having an opinion. They look awful to me, especially the ones which are partly covered in icing or frosting. It looks as though the baker keeled over halfway through decorating it.

Icing is delicious, and personally speaking if I want cake I want bloody cake not half the contents of a fruit bowl on top but you can have an iced cake with fruit or flowers on it too if you're that way inclined.

CheeryB · 26/11/2019 10:43

I think they can be really beautiful. Much prefer them to iced. I really don't like icing. Went to a wedding recently with a cake in similar style to those posted on here. It was moist and delicious and far superior to sickly sweet icing.

CheeryB · 26/11/2019 10:43

I want some now.

RJnomore1 · 26/11/2019 11:24

Question:

Is it cheaper to get a naked cake? It should be - it’s hours less work just to crumb coat and bung some flowers on...

pigsDOfly · 26/11/2019 11:33

Naked cake?

Oh for god's sake.

It's a cake that hasn't been covered in icing, it isn't 'naked'.

If it's been decorated with other things it's a cake with decorations but no icing.

Who comes up with these silly names.

Wexone · 26/11/2019 12:00

I had one for my wedding loved it. Had fresh cream and strawberries on it. It was cheaper and as well as that it had to be made frsh, so may of the iced ones are bought in bases and made a few days before with elaborate icing so never taste fresh to me. we used it as part of our dessert and none was left over after the day . It was devine

AryaStarkWolf · 26/11/2019 12:01

I think they look really good, less fake

puds11 · 26/11/2019 12:08

They look shit. Blates the result of someone running out of icing and think ‘Ahhh fuck it’

Loopytiles · 26/11/2019 12:10

Oh wow, thecats! That sounds amazing.

We had several big home made cakes, different flavours. Bought big tins, family members practiced and gave them to us as gifts for the wedding. Was great!

SVRT19674 · 26/11/2019 12:28

I have just made my first rich fruit xmas cake. Will feed it a little brandy next week and then will put marzipan and ice it. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmy!

I actually don't mind a naked cake but the first few in the link (I didn't get beyond those) look wonky, unprofessional and incomplete!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/11/2019 13:29

I’m not great at links, but if you scroll down on Frances Quinn’s Instagram, she has some gorgeous naked wedding cakes. I think it’s all in the decorating really.
