Either ice the cake or don't. Prefereably ice the whole damn thing with lashings of buttercream.
Naked cakes just don't look finished.

I don't think they look great at all. Fine for an everyday teatime bite, but not for a celebration.

speakout · 26/11/2019 04:21

Icing or especially buttercream is the one thing that puts me off cakes. Horrible sweet or fatty.
My kids would peel icing off birthday cake when they were small and eat only the cake.
I'm not a fan of cake at all, but a plain cake- madeira, carrot cake or fruit cake with no icing would be my choice.

Countryescape · 26/11/2019 06:50

@SleepingStandingUp sorry looks hideous to me. Horses for courses I guess Confused

CigarsofthePharoahs · 26/11/2019 07:44

if anything the cake is going to be fully formed from icing with no sponge at all.

The toddler group I went to had a cake rota. When it was my turn I made extra icing and piped some swirls onto greaseproof as I thought the kids would prefer that - leaving more cake for the grown ups.
Turns out several grown ups wanted extra icing.

Blakes77 · 26/11/2019 08:14

My perfect wedding cake would be a classic Italian white tiered coconut cake with intricate swirls of buttercream covering the whole thing. Not that I have thought at all.about it. .. I found a picture on Pinterest but you have to open an app now to use pinterest? I hate apps.😡

Zaphodsotherhead · 26/11/2019 08:24

XP doesn't like icing or marzipan. Every year his only contribution to the family christmas was a fruit cake. Just a fruit cake. Naked.

Nobody else likes fruit cake. I like the icing.

So he'd eat the naked fruit cake by himself. Never even brought over a bottle of Prosecco the cheap bastard.

Sorry. As you were, everyone.

AllergicToAMop · 26/11/2019 08:27

I think they are great. Usually look lovely and they are not such a sugar bomb like the ones with crapload of icing.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/11/2019 08:52

Nah , they look crap, last minute, thrown together and "this will do"

Cake= iced , preferably fruit cake, marzipan and a thin layer of royal icing .

Afternoon tea cake -fine to be naked
Wedding cake or Christmas cake - nope

misspiggy19 · 26/11/2019 08:55

Those naked cakes look seriously shit. Unless each and every layer is perfectly even they will always look shit. Even then they look lazy.

^This. It looks unfinished, thrown together and lazy. Nothing impressive about it

Sallyseagull · 26/11/2019 09:03

I think they look lovely. Plus I dont like icing that much so its win win for me.

Cineraria · 26/11/2019 09:05

I was really disappointed when the traditional rich fruit cake with marzipan and royal icing fell out of favour. I was always so excited for a piece of wedding cake when I went to weddings as a child and at Christmas too. I also liked watching the brides and grooms nervously trying to cut into them.

I would put these naked ones on a par with the fondant and buttercream type of cakes.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/11/2019 09:09

It is a cheaper way to present a cake, and can be prepared with a lot less skill than an iced cake . This is why bakers love it as a fad.

DangerClose · 26/11/2019 09:10

I think they look fine.

As for taste, my favourite cake of all time is victoria sponge and that's "naked". Certainly not a trendy and when made well, tastes delicious! To me a "naked cake" is just like a massive victoria sponge with added fruit! Yum!

jay55 · 26/11/2019 09:23

I thought that other than birthdays and weddings most cakes were not iced.

stucknoue · 26/11/2019 09:33

It's fine for normal tea, but not a wedding cake

Iamthewombat · 26/11/2019 09:42

FIG wedding cakes? They’ll keep your guests regular l!

thecatsthecats · 26/11/2019 09:51

A well-cooked moist naked cake with good buttercream filling is preferable to a shitty sponge covered in tacky icing.

I stand by the opinion that most wedding cakes are pretty shit, and serve the look a lot more than the quality of the cake. Which is why I made my own, but it wasn't naked.

(ooh er, missus, with your naked moistness!)

Spanglybangles · 26/11/2019 09:56

See I love them. I’m not a fan of royal or fondant icing, but I do like buttercream, just not too much of it. I love sponge though, so done well, a semi naked cake is perfect for me. This one for example looks gorgeous I think.

To not get the naked cake thing ?
bsc · 26/11/2019 09:56

"naked cakes" is this a stupid Instagram thing? My ds started on about "naked cake" at the weekend, and I told him it's called "cake" just cake, no need for a qualifier. The word is cake.

Yet more marketing crap it seems...

DangerClose · 26/11/2019 09:57

Agreed!

I stand by the opinion that most wedding cakes are pretty shit, and serve the look a lot more than the quality of the cake

Agreed again! And I'd much rather have a tasty cake at a wedding than one that looks nice!

ItsAPleasureSwingYouFuckNut · 26/11/2019 09:58

They look beautiful. People are being very rude.

Why would you want old-fashioned icing on a cake, when you could have fresh flowers and fruit decorating it?

shearwater · 26/11/2019 10:11

YABVU, most icing is utterly repulsive, and a lot of cake is all about the decoration, not the taste of the cake. I don't think there is anything more disappointing, food-wise, than a bad tasting cake. What a waste of calories.

I've never heard of the "naked cake" thing, but I've never made highly decorated cupcakes or fancy birthday cakes piled high with icing as I hate them, and with a good cake icing is gilding the lily.

Loopytiles · 26/11/2019 10:13

YABU, they can look good and lots of people dislike icing. (I do like icing and also cakes with less!)

Ohyesiam · 26/11/2019 10:18

I don’t like fondant our royal icing, but I love ganache and buttercream.

Ideally I’d like a Scantily Clad cake, because too much is too much ( for me).
They can look beautiful, but doesn’t the icing keep the moisture in?

Alsohuman · 26/11/2019 10:19

Buttercream is designed to be used in small quantities. The amount of it on modern cakes makes me feel sick.
