My son (12) has had cold like symptoms today. Thought nothing of it really. This evening he’s got worse. Temperature won’t come below 39 on full doses of Calpol and ibuprofen every 2 hours.
He’s sleeping fitfully, sweating lots and shivering.
Breathing is a little fast but not massively so.
What do I do for the best?
Wake him at 11 for his next dose? Leave him be?
Thanks

whyayepetal · 24/11/2019 21:46

Another one saying A&E - all the best OP

HalyardHitch · 24/11/2019 21:47

Hope 111 help!

nocoolnamesleft · 24/11/2019 21:51

Hopefully just flu (definitely going round) but a child that age with that resp rate? Needs someone to check him over.

M0reGinPlease · 24/11/2019 21:52

What's a resp rate and how do you work it out?

Hope all is well with your son OP.

Mopmum35 · 24/11/2019 21:59

Hope he is going to be ok.

Spacecudet · 24/11/2019 21:59

Go to a&e. They can't diagnose him on 111. Better be safe. Hope he's okay x x x

OctoberLovers · 24/11/2019 21:59

A person's respiratory rate is the number of breaths you take per minute.
1 = A breath in and a breath out...

SeaToSki · 24/11/2019 22:00

A resp rate is how many breaths are taken in a minute. It is a good sign of body distress. You work it out by counting breaths in or out for 1 minute

stophuggingme · 24/11/2019 22:04

I hope he’s ok.

zippyswife · 24/11/2019 22:05

Hope you’re at a&e now- you’ll be in the best hands.

itsAlmostXmas · 24/11/2019 22:11

Hope he is ok Thanks

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/11/2019 22:11

My dd had this, it was flu and she ended up spending two days in ITU ventilated.

It's not 'just' flu 🙄

Op hope your son is okay, def get him checked and go back if you're not happy. It took a GP and two paramedics to see dd before they realised how unwell she was....

PoptartPoptart · 24/11/2019 22:12

111 will just tell you to go to A&E with those symptoms and high stats.
You are wasting time. Go straight to the hospital.
Sepsis can take hold very quickly and can be gravely serious.

timeforteea · 24/11/2019 22:13

Hope he is ok.

Frouby · 24/11/2019 22:15

Hope you are on the way to A and E op, how worrying it must be. My niece was in last week with a very bad throat infection they were concerned about being sepsis. Luckily it was 'just' an infection. But they took her symptoms very seriously.

Hairwizard · 24/11/2019 22:26

Hope all is well. I drove my then 8 week old twin son to a&e in September fearing the worst. Main thing for me was mottled skin. Proper shit myself. They started treating for sepsis/meningitis and thankfully all tests clear. Nasty viral infection.

Grobagsforever · 24/11/2019 22:47

Hope all well OP. Glad I have learned about resp rate from this thread

Ellapaella · 24/11/2019 23:01

Hope all is ok op. I'd definitely phone for advice with a resp rate of 36.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/11/2019 23:05

What’s the plan op? Hope you’re in A&E getting him assessed and that he's on the mend soon. X

TurquoiseDress · 24/11/2019 23:08

Hi OP hope that you've managed to take him along to A&E, it does sound very much like he requires medical input- with the temperature not coming down, high breathing rate and what sounds like rigors.

Hope he feels better soon.

Rose87777 · 24/11/2019 23:17

Such a scary time I hope all is ok OP and your son is getting the help he needs. Have been in a&e this year with our LG who had similar symptoms. They take it v seriously (as they should). She was kept in but it turned out to be a nasty virus - thank God.

Nat6999 · 24/11/2019 23:18

My 15 year old ds is the same this weekend, awful cough that makes him vomit, no appetite or energy, hardly been out of bed for nearly 3 days, rang 111 for a home visit yesterday, they refused & only out of hours appointments were at the other side of the city at a hospital that is like a bear garden. Managed to get an appointment today near home, he has a very bad chest infection, his sats are low, been prescribed antibiotics & inhalers. He should have been starting his GCSE mocks tomorrow but there is no way he will be well enough for school, not even with 24 hours antibiotics in him, this has been lingering for a couple of months, I had taken him to the doctors twice before & got told it's viral, don't waste our time & now this. I've got him on paracetamol & ibuprofen every 6 hours & gallons of fluids to get his temperature down, I hope he has a better night tonight.

OctoberLovers · 24/11/2019 23:21

@Nat6999

What are his sats sitting at?
If low, he should be in hospital, not just on antibiotics and an inhaler.

If to ill to get out of bed, i would say he needs some blood tests

Pancakeflipper · 24/11/2019 23:35

Hope he's OK (and you) Flowers
