Aibu to expect a bit more urgency from gp out of hours?

First time ever starting a thread.

Fully aware I could be being unreasonable.

Anyway, on Thursday I started burning up, fever of 40°c, shaking uncontrollably all night, thought it was the flu.

This morning, after a really rough night, could not swallow etc, I looked in my mouth and noticed my tonsils covered in white pus.

I rang out of hours at 8.30 am this morning and I am STILL waiting for a call back 12 hours later.

I have put in a terrible day, have barely lifted my head off the pillow, sweating then freezing, cannot eat, forcing myself to drink but is very painful.

I understand that there may be more urgent calls than mine but surely if there is anything much more urgent they should go to A&E?????

I do not mind waiting but it's been 12 hours and I could cry with the pain I am in Sad

Op, that's disgraceful. I'm feeling very lucky that where I live in Wales you get a call back quickly (for kids at least, not tested on myself) and the staff are helpful.
I hope you feel better today.

Ive used Push dr. They prescribe straight away and send prescription direct to boots.
It wad about £20 and £3 subs .

Lisburn is much better ! If you are still feeling rough the a&e unit opens there at 8am again tomorrow morning so if you are down there for it opening then you would possibly get seen quickly !?
It's actually closest to me but because of the trust areas we aren't allowed to use the OOH there. Makes no sense !

If you are really desperate today and want to avoid the OOH there is a private GP surgery in Newry Duality I think....im not sure how expensive it it but something makes me think around £50 for OOH appt but I could be wrong !

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/11/2019 10:37

It's utterly appalling. It's clear that one of the main issues was that there weren't any doctors available. That's not down to too much demand. What on earth were all the other patients being advised to do?

ginforthewin4 · 24/11/2019 11:10

I have no idea. It is probably why I was not checked either. Unless the doctor was out at houses or something, I just don't know.
I have learnt my lesson to just wait and see my own GP or if I can't for the likes of tonsilitis etc then I will just take myself to an A&E, which means I'm not limited to one area.

Thanks everyone for all you advice and kindness. Much appreciated. Smile

I wasn't expecting you to have the answer :) it was more a despair on your behalf.

I really hope the meds kick in quickly for you.

Blabbyblab · 24/11/2019 11:25

Op can you get to a walk in centre? My daughter is 10 months and had a temperature of 38.8 yesterday, I rang 111 but took her to the walk in anyway as I wasn't prepared to wait for the clinician to call back as her temp was rising. I still haven't had a call back and that was yesterday around 6 pm.
I hope you get sorted Flowers

Blabbyblab · 24/11/2019 11:27

Sorry just read your latest message about a&e, glad you are sorted.

ginforthewin4 · 24/11/2019 15:09

Final post. Thanks to everyone for recommendations. We got some groceries today Wink

Glad to hear that you eventually got sorted OP, but it's just disgraceful how long it took. It really does seem to be a bit of a postcode lottery with regards to how efficiently you're treated - I fall under the Lisburn area and like another poster mentioned, it was far quicker. I even had a follow up appointment made for me at my own GP!

Hopefully the ABs will get you on your way to recovery soon! Thanks

Op I used to get terrible tonsillitis and one time I used Push Doctor when I knew it was bacterial - it’s one of these app based private services where you see a GP over video call there are a few around. They prescribed antibiotics and sent the prescription electronically to my local chemist. Not sure if they cover Northern Ireland but worth considering for next time.

Streamside · 24/11/2019 15:24

I used to be prone to tonsillitis and once developed a septic throat condition which was really grim.Explanation of it was enough to get me antibiotics from a pharmacy ahead of a visit to the gp the following day.Improvement was rapid but my throat actually closed over when we went over bumps on the trip to the gp.

Nogodsnomasters · 25/11/2019 20:03

How are you today op?

ginforthewin4 · 26/11/2019 09:26

Hi there

Only seeing this message. Yesterday was an improvement which was good as partner was back to work so I had school run etc to do. I woke up feeling like I could speak a lot better and swallow better so I kept on top of painkillers and A Bs, I have to admit by last night I was pretty exhausted and feeling poorly again but by no means as bad as what it was.
Today, even more improvement, glands still swollen, neck and ears still sore, breath still vile and head sore but I am getting there! Theres the tiniest bit of pus on my right tonsil so the ABs are certainly doing their job well. I think it will just take a week or so to fully recover.

I am just so HAPPY to have got over the worst of it. I have never ever been as ill in my life and I really actually don't know why a lot people don't see tonsillitis as a big deal (although maybe worse due to age). But holy crap I have full sympathy for anyone who ever suffers from full blown tonsillitis like I have. Shock

ginforthewin4 · 26/11/2019 09:32

Also, just as a positive, I had 2 cysts on my tonsils for nearly a year there, went to ENT etc, only way to get rid was to have tonsils removed.
However, due to the amount of pus I had collected on them over the weekend, it has seemingly popped my cysts!!! They are GONE!!!

My tonsils are like brand new, minus the tiny bit of pus remaining and inflammation. Grin

I think I have tonsillitis- suddenly felt poorly sat pm - temp, shivery, sore throat then woke Sunday morn with a killer throat and white streaks on tonsils esp the left one. I felt generally awful since - body aches, eyes hurt, headaches, temp and shaking uncontrollably. Left side of my neck and jaw and ear is agony now :( I have a doc appt tomorrow morn I'm praying they will give me something I've been in bed mostly since Sunday :( worried they will tell me it's viral and send me away??!

ginforthewin4 · 26/11/2019 09:48

Oh no littlemissblue
If you seen my picture, I would recommend you get those pain killers. They have been very good and they really eased things for me.

As for it being viral, I'm not so sure there would be puss etc. When I spoke to the doctor she could tell by my voice that it needed ABs, so has your voice changed? Is it muffled or sore to speak?
Also bacterial tonsillitis doesn't have a cough. That's a good sign of bacterial rather than viral as viruses tend to bring coughs, runny noses etc with them.
I am by no means a doctor but thats just what I gather.
I would push for ABs because I dread to think what I would of been like today had I not got them Sat night. And even at that I am not 100%, as I say it will take a while.

I feel so sorry for you though, honestly. Flowers

littlemissblue2000 · 26/11/2019 10:00

Thankyou, I have no cough or cold symptoms at all and the speed it came on was crazy. I felt absolutely fine sat morn. I def have pus and it's so painful to swallow, talk, move my jaw at all.
I will send husband out for the painkillers thanks! He's working from home today and tomorrow but I will be on my own to sort 3 kids on thurs so hope to be out of bed by then at least. He's not v sympathetic, making out i'm milking it and don't need to see a doc! :(

ginforthewin4 · 26/11/2019 10:09

Ohhhh he has clearly never had tonsillitis then. Thats what I meant by people not seeing it as a big deal! It is down played alot and I said previous I would rather birth my children again! I stand by that!
I think you should ring your doc, ask for an appt today as your really struggling.
Once you get some ABs youll see improvement quickly.
I got mine sat night and was up all night anyway so got the full days into me in 12 hrs over night, then a days worth sunday and by mon morn id seen improvement and today even more improvement. Dont get me wrong yesterday wasnt great but I could get up and go about my business with plenty of pain killers, I wasnt bed bound.
Push for them, if its bacterial then nothing else will really cut it for you xx
