Aibu to expect a bit more urgency from gp out of hours?

First time ever starting a thread.

Fully aware I could be being unreasonable.

Anyway, on Thursday I started burning up, fever of 40°c, shaking uncontrollably all night, thought it was the flu.

This morning, after a really rough night, could not swallow etc, I looked in my mouth and noticed my tonsils covered in white pus.

I rang out of hours at 8.30 am this morning and I am STILL waiting for a call back 12 hours later.

I have put in a terrible day, have barely lifted my head off the pillow, sweating then freezing, cannot eat, forcing myself to drink but is very painful.

I understand that there may be more urgent calls than mine but surely if there is anything much more urgent they should go to A&E?????

I do not mind waiting but it's been 12 hours and I could cry with the pain I am in Sad

Oh it might be solpadeine actually. Anyway, ABs, sharpish...wrap up, cab or lift or uber to a & e?

ginforthewin4 · 23/11/2019 21:34

Sinkgirl, as far as I know they will have the perscription there and then, if not part of it until chemist opens.

A&e will be a longer wait at this point. I've been before with my son (who stopped breathing at home) on a sat night and we waited SEVEN hours. (Febrile convulsion due to tonsilitis)

Anyone else get really sore ears when they have this too??

Hi OP, whereabouts are you? There should still be a pharmacy open near you as they do late nights in shifts but can be tricky to find out which one due to the NI health service websites being really difficult to navigate - I'm North Down and had to find one recently.

ginforthewin4 · 23/11/2019 21:37

I am the armagh area x

Can you try push dr ?

Makinganewthinghappen · 23/11/2019 21:40

I had this a year or two ago . In the end I got a taxi to a and e because I was feeling so terrible and I was calling and calling the out of hours gp and not getting any response.

It wasn’t a long wait - I waited about 10 minutes for the initial triage and then was straight away admitted and started on Iv antibiotics etc . Apparently my heart was going super fast .

ginforthewin4 · 23/11/2019 21:40

We have tried. They said I've 20 in front of me still and will be early morn probably. That's if no one else more urgent comes in.
Temp up to 38.2 now and I'm only 20 mins away from next dose. Do you see what I mean by it just goes up so quickly 😥

You need to get yourself to A&E op. Wrap up warm and take a pillow with you so you can try to get comfortable while you wait there.

I had my tonsils out at 16 but I remember how horrible it was and it must be worse when you're older.

Makinganewthinghappen · 23/11/2019 21:41

I forgot to add I felt really embarrassed about going for a sore throat but sometimes a sore throat is serious!

runoutofideasnow · 23/11/2019 21:41

Please also be careful with your paracetamol doses, keep a track on your phone notes. It's easy to over dose.

WhoisitnowRalph · 23/11/2019 21:42

Yeah, everything is inflamed so the eustachion (sp?) tubes are affected and make your ears feel sore. I used to get terrible stomach pains as well. It's grim OP.

ginforthewin4 · 23/11/2019 21:42

I think I will you know.

Thanks everyone

mmbopdooo · 23/11/2019 21:47

Sounds like you need some anti biotics call 111 they may do prescription or advise you to go to a walk in tomorrow

HoomanMoomin · 23/11/2019 21:48

You need to go to A&E.

macaroniandpizza · 23/11/2019 21:48

Id be getting dp or someone else who can drive to take you to a&e you cant wait til the morning in all that pain :(

QuestionableMouse · 23/11/2019 21:51

Honestly op go in the car and head to A&E. Hopefully you'll be seen quickly and get home.

RozHuntleysStump · 23/11/2019 21:51

Go to a and e. Just offering sympathy. I had tonsillitis once and I’d rather give birth. Hope you get the meds soon

NoProblem123 · 23/11/2019 21:53

Another vote for gargling warm salty water if you can bear it.
It’s sounds awful 💐

minesasaugagesupper · 23/11/2019 21:53

Use disprol - it dissolves and then the little bits stick to the back of your throat to give a bit more pain relief. Try to gargle it a bit before you swallow. Also, try to eat some tinned pineapple. Something in the pineapple helps sore throats. Failing the tinned pineapple get some Polly Pineapples, they work sort of the same.

I wouldn't head to A&E. You'll sit there for hours on a Saturday night. Much better at home and wait for the call back from the doctor.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Savingshoes · 23/11/2019 21:57

If you can barely swallow then you are at risk of dehydration.
If you can swallow tablets then you are at less risk.
Toddle off to A&E.

igglepigglegingin · 23/11/2019 21:58

OP just to add, sometimes you can triaged by another nurse after your original call - then given a time to wait for the doctors. When I arrive with my DD at the OOH it's then first come first served. So there's every possibility you could be hours at the OOH doctor waiting to be seen. If you can't drink and haven't passed urine I would get checked out sooner if you can at a&e.
