That Jo Swinson seems to be unpopular in general with most voters?

Rosehip10 · 23/11/2019 13:34

Even most committed lib dems seem to agree she had a car crash on question time last night. I am a remainer but like most think it would have to be resolved by a second vote (I know the lib dems say they would reovoke if Swinson was PM and second vote otherwise).

Tbh I don't think the lib dems can move on until they have a leader who wasn't involved in the coalition.

And what is with all this attaching #girlyswot to most of her social media posts? It just looks idiotic and contrived and a product of a social media party focus group.

Mad leaflets saying "Your next PM Jo Swinson".........

I think she got by far the toughest questions last night and the most hostility from the audience.

I do think she genuinely believes in the politics and maybe it’s refreshing to have an era of less oily politicians. Charm and competence aren’t the same thing

Nat6999 · 23/11/2019 15:02

Both Jo Swinson & Boris were terrible last night, how anyone can put any trust in either of them I will never know. Jeremy Corbyn & Nicola Sturgeon came across very well, were genuine & their policies were good. The Lib dem approach to Brexit will just cause our country to be even more divided than it already is, at least Labour are trying to look at both sides of the debate & are still trying to listen to both sides of the arguement.

lumity · 23/11/2019 15:03

Plus I don’t disagree with her position on Revoking A50. She stands for what she believes in - simple as that. If you don’t want to revoke, don’t vote LD. It couldn’t be any clearer. Nearly half the public who voted in the referendum voted remain and without the LD’s they would have no voice.

MoaningMinniee · 23/11/2019 15:07

I'm beginning to wobble away from LD too. Uber safe Tory seat here, the Tactical Vote website suggests LD is likely to be the best chance of beating the Friend Of Boris who has been parachuted in over the heads of our own local Conservatives (who are apparently quietly pissed off, we had a perfectly decent local candidate after years of London based Friends Of Conservative Central Office). But my heart is Green and I'm thinking I'll probably vote that way to help save our Green candidate's deposit. The utter lack of critical thinking about trans issues and the failure to address just why so many people voted Leave stick in my craw.

thecatsthecats · 23/11/2019 15:09

For the love of God, can people stop pretending that a Lib Dem majority government revoking would be "undemocratic".

If you say you don't like or don't like their other policies or prefer a different way of remaining or leaving or whatever, FINE. But a majority party freely elected delivering a manifesto pledge is about as democratic as it gets, REGARDLESS of the circumstances at which it was arrived.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 23/11/2019 15:11

We understand that if it wasn’t for LibDems getting into bed with the Tories then The austerity cuts that have damaged so many people’s lives wouldn’t have happened they have damaged themselves (plus the student fees debacle)

Sir Nick Clegg now works for Facebook Hmm (on a huge salary)

Userzzzzz · 23/11/2019 15:16

I don’t think she is as bad as was made out. She’s had the least experience really and it showed but I didn’t think it was a total car crash. Basically a lot of people vote for Lib Dems because they have committed local MPs. I think they’ll struggle to take labour areas but I think they’ll do better than predicted in terms of taking conservative seats. My area has been safe Tory for years but everyone i speak to thinks Boris is vile and it is strong remain area. I think there is a strong chance it’ll go yellow if the under 60s turnout in good numbers.

endofthelinefinally · 23/11/2019 15:17

She lacks intelligence and critical thinking.
I am a remainer, but I honestly think that another referendum might well lead to riots and violence.
The country is in such a mess, we need a strong and intelligent leader.
Unfortunately the current lot are a complete shower. It is truly shameful.
I used to vote LD. Now I am effectively disenfranchised.
Sad

Getitwright · 23/11/2019 15:18

I just wish voters would concentrate on the policies put forward, checking as far as possible how truthful, viable and deliverable they are. Yes the party leaders are important, but this is about real life, not voting for someone in the bloody jungle, or on Strictly!

Stooshie8 · 23/11/2019 15:19

I don't think strident women are liked. I'm surprised at female friends saying they can't stand her or don't like her.
I'm not a libdem supporter but I admire her determination.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 23/11/2019 15:22

Jo Swinson isn’t particularly likable I think particularly with female politicians it helps to fall into a role of no nonsense takes charge and straight to the point (some would say bossy) or warm/motherly/speaks common sense.

I think she is trying to create an image of no nonsense/straight to the point/takes charge persona like Thatcher/Stergeon but she isn't as sharp and it comes across as disingenuous

I don’t think they shall do well this election the revoke article 50 is a policy that would never appeal to enough voters and would create even more of a decide in our society people recognize this even if that are adamantly opposed to leaving the EU

user1497997754 · 23/11/2019 15:31

Her earings are awful a throw back to the 80's and for that alone I just can't take her seriously

breakfastpizza · 23/11/2019 15:34

She's not a friend to women. Her party openly tells gender critical women that the Lib Dems don't want their vote. Imagine any other group being told such a thing? It's fine to disagree, but to purposely ostracize women for daring to raise concerns is misogyny at its finest.

It's been mentioned several times in some of my work-related FB groups by women who normally don't raise such issues, so it's not going unnoticed.

Cinammoncake · 23/11/2019 15:35

She seems to be taking all the flack for the Tories austerity rather than them - I thought she got a hard time on QT and I think she's judged by higher standards because she's a woman. I like her. Better than the other two anyway. Sturgeon is my favourite but since not in Scotland I'm voting LibDem.

Bluntness100 · 23/11/2019 15:40

I don't know what it is, she just comes across as unpolished and whiney. Even sturgeon came across way more professionally.

I always try to find the good in female leaders, but god I watch her and think what the hell were they thinking when they elected her leader. Then I have to stop watching her because she's just coming across as embarassingly inept. You actually cringe listening.

Plus god knows what's going on with her dress sense but it doesn't help her gain any gravitas, which she sorely needs, with items such as her hot pink shoes and big dangley earrings.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 23/11/2019 15:46

Sturgeon is fabulous, I want to like Swinson but struggle.

Sagradafamiliar · 23/11/2019 15:47

Exactly, thecats.

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 23/11/2019 16:21

I backed her for LD leader because I felt she would work well collaboratively but she's been a tremendous disappointment on that front. I deplore what the Libdems are doing in Canterbury, for example, and dozens of other constituencies (including mine) will have the left vote split because the Remain Alliance couldn't get the LDs to back off in enough seats. I will (probably) end up voting LD in order to try and get Labour (or at least get rid of my fuckwitted Tory MP) but it doesn't sit comfortably. I am not very happy with the Revoke A50 stance (and I say that as a rabid Remainer) and in many ways feel the LDs have become a kind of mirror image of the BXP, with their monomaniacal agenda.

And what is with all this attaching #girlyswot to most of her social media posts? It just looks idiotic and contrived and a product of a social media party focus group.

Well, it's a crack at Johnson, obviously, but it would be more piquant if she didn't actually come across as everybody's least favourite nominee for Head Girl.

And yes, the playdoh jewellery...just awful.

BackforGood · 23/11/2019 16:55

Sturgeon is extremely polished and professional - I totally disagree with us judging what a politician looks like, and that we should be only looking at the policies and wild promises in the manifestoes, but, in this visual and media age, you can't ignore the fact it does help.

Johnson seems to have gained popularity through his "bumbling idiot image" - frightening that is the case, but I think people have got used to voting on things like Strictly or I'm a Celebrity and have forgotten about the seriousness and impact of decisions taken by PMs

Corbyn - although his politics are WAY out of line with mine, I have a sort of grudging admiration for in that he has always stuck by his guns in terms of what he believes and how his very socialist mind works. He's not allowed himself to be 'moulded' too much by the media moguls, he states 'this is what we want to achieve, vote if you agree. However you do have to wonder about any main opposition party that isn't miles and miles ahead in the polls after 9 years of austerity / horrendous issue of homelessness / NHS being on its knees / people waiting on trolleys for hour upon hour in corridors / people having to wait hours for an ambulance / people not being able to get GP appointments / Schools having to shut for 1/2 days every week / children with SEN just being abandoned, and sometimes just shoved into a completely unprepared mainstream class and sometimes just left without a school place / Mental Health services completely broken / Social Care completely overwhelmed /etc /etc / etc
Swinson - (I didn't see Question Time last night) - yes, obviously less experienced, but does seem to speak well when I've heard her. (See point about Nicola Sturgeon and the fact it shouldn't matter, BUT) She doesn't always present herself well, and that can be a bit distracting. Yes, I hate myself for thinking that.

longwayoff · 23/11/2019 17:32

I'm voting LD in the hope of helping Boris away from a majority but, much as I want to, cannot like Jo Swinson. Currently though, in this area, her party is least worst option. What a bloody state we're in.

rookiemere · 23/11/2019 17:39

I had turned into an ardent Lib Dem supporter after the initial Brexit referendum and I really do think people should stop harping on about their time in coalition- has nobody noticed how much worse things have got now they've gone.

However whilst I don't agree with Brexit, neither do I believe we can wave a magic wand and pretend the referendum didn't happen. Having another vote once the actual terms are decided seems like a much fairer way to go and I do find her somewhat shrieky rather than confident and composed. Not a lot of great other choices though.

BMW6 · 23/11/2019 17:41

Well she has made it clear that she doesn't want my vote - so she won't get it.

gottagetbetter7 · 23/11/2019 17:41

Jo Swinson on Question Time was an awkward watch. I think there is even a slim possibility of her losing her seat at this rate.

Passthecherrycoke · 23/11/2019 17:45

I think she got by far the toughest questions last night and the most hostility from the audience.

I completely agree with @GinUnicorn and think she didn’t really have a chance without one sympathetic question or round of applause, it was All against her realky

lumity · 23/11/2019 17:50

Well I was out last night, but just watched the Question Time debate and I thought she was great actually. Far more genuine than any of the others. I don’t care about her shoes or earnings any more than I care about BJ or JC’s shoes or choice of suit. This kind of petty fashion comment annoys me tbh - it’s the kind of thing you’d expect in the Daily Mail, so give it a rest. The woman knows exactly what she stands for and she’s the most honest of all of them.
