Came in to find 13 month old DS with baby oil lid off

It’s a child proof lid, but somehow he’d managed to get the lid off and had it in his mouth. Some of it was on the carpet. We’d only been out of the room a minute or two and he’d got it down from the shelf. I keep forgetting how tall he’s getting already.
I just did a quick google and there are stories about babies dying from this?! I just spoke to my DP and he says I’m overreacting.
He’s not been sick or anything, he’s fine in himself. I don’t even know if he swallowed any.

You’ve done the right thing calling for advice. Keep an eye on LO, I’m sure he’ll be fine. Don’t beat yourself up, you try your best to keep them safe but these things do happen.

My then newly crawling DD found crumbs from a dishwasher tablet on the kitchen floor and tried to eat them. We keep them locked in a cupboard but one must have crumbled as we took it out the packet. DD was immediately sick at the taste, we called 111 and spent 4 hours in the hospital for monitoring. DD was fine, it really must have been the tiniest crumbs. We felt like the worst parents in the world and the Dr in A&E told us not to be so harsh on ourselves, it really was an accident as we’d been storing them safely.

CAG12 · 23/11/2019 10:30

@Treacletoots standard unhelpful MN outrage based answer.

Seems like you've done the right thing OP. Dont beat yourself up too much.

StarlingsInSummer · 23/11/2019 10:32

God, I had no idea baby oil was so dangerous! I’m sure the bottle we had when DS was tiny just had a flip top lid, not a safety/lockable lid!

DBML · 23/11/2019 10:33

I know it’s a tough one but I never left my DS alone. It was the only way.

I learnt my lesson the day I popped to the shop leaving my son (18 months) with his dad.
I got home about 15 mins later to see that dad had fallen asleep on the sofa and son was wandering around the living room with an open packet of fresh beetroot from the fridge. He was totally amazing at himself making patterns on the cream carpet with the juice.

I went NUTS!

DH woke up with a start. He’s just dozed off; he thought DS was in his play pen; must have climbed out etc etc

Never let him out of my sight again for a few years. So lucky it was just beetroot and not something really dangerous. Things can happen so quickly.

DBML · 23/11/2019 10:34

*amazed at himself not amazing 🙄

frasersmummy · 23/11/2019 10:37

Please don't bear yourself up.. Honestly kids will find a way to cause havoc no matter how careful you are. You have sought advice and you aee looking out for him. That mskez you a good mum
When the panic subsides and you have proof no harm.done you will suddenly realise thar ds has grown!!!

I am laughing at the extreme replies on here from treacle at one end to.the poster who said its meant for babies!!! Only on mn

PicsInRed · 23/11/2019 10:47

With that update, if he was sucking at the bottle I would take him in to paeds a&e to be seen.

Don't beat yourself up OP, we baby proof the house, but you cant eyeball them literally every second, you'd drive yourself mad. Silly accidents happen, this is just one of those things.Flowers

FairyJuice · 23/11/2019 10:52

All of the people who are saying it could do no harm are dreadfully misinformed. The issue with oil (any type of oil) is that a tiny amount in the mouth can easily become aspirated and cause breathing problems/suffocation.

Op I would call 111 and ask for advice. Don't beat yourself up, these things happen.

FairyJuice · 23/11/2019 10:54

Sorry just saw you've already called 👍

CathyandHeathcliff · 23/11/2019 11:12

I suffer with anxiety disorder so getting myself into a right state now! Imagining all sorts. I also have intrusive thoughts and regular panic attacks, so not a happy combo! Already feeling close to a full blown panic attack...is the aspiration/pneumonia part rare when someone drinks/ingests an oily substance?

CathyandHeathcliff · 23/11/2019 11:15

Says this on a poison control website:

Symptoms can happen quickly – within a couple of hours or even sooner.

It’s already been 3 hours...I’m assuming he’d be showing symptoms by now. He’s currently asleep and not breathing more noisily that usual or anything.

Baby oil is mostly liquid paraffin, isn't it? That's routinely fed to goats (or used to be) for all sorts of problems. You will probably get some interesting nappies soon, but if 111 aren't worried, then I think you can relax a bit.
If it makes you feel better, you could check him every, say, half an hour to make sure his breathing sounds okay and he isn't feverish, has no rashes etc. I don't think it's really necessary but having something to do might feel better than just waiting and fretting.

Needthesunshine · 23/11/2019 11:36

You’ve done the right thing by seeking advice from 111. Stick to their advice and stop reading this thread as it will only increase your anxiety.
These things happen! Doesn’t make you a bad mum.

BrendasUmbrella · 23/11/2019 11:36

I've noticed that the first response on a thread is usually a troll. They must pounce on new threads to try and make the poster feel shit about themselves, and hope that people will be influenced by them and follow suit. Sadly sometimes it works.

My friends' baby drank a swig of perfume as a baby. We panicked, but he was fine. It's worth keeping an eye on him for a day, like 111 said. But if he seems fine he probably is fine!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/11/2019 13:01

@CathyandHeathcliff when ds was a similar age I turned round to see him with half a dishwasher tablet in his mouth!! (I was loading it and he took the tablet out the tray)Took him a and e and he was fine thank goodness.Dont feel bad it happens to everyone at some point.

CathyandHeathcliff · 23/11/2019 14:49

Well we’re 7 hours since the incident and no signs of anything happening, no cough, no difficulty breathing and he hasn’t been sick at all.

OP posts:
CAG12 · 23/11/2019 15:04

@FairyJuice aspiration can be causes with any liquid at all and its really not an issue unless theres a problem with the swallow mechanism.

IF aspiration does happen its more likely to cause an infection such as pneumonia, which is treated with a hospital admission and antibiotics

FairyJuice · 23/11/2019 15:32

Yes but mineral oils are more likely to be aspirated than regular liquids because they don't elicit the normal cough reflex that other liquids such as water do.

Mjlp · 23/11/2019 15:52

These things happen.

One of mine did the same thing with sudocreme once. I was amazed she didn't get any in her mouth, nose or eyes; just all over her hands, hair, feet and the carpet lol.

I'm sure your son will be fine. I think he'd be gagging if he'd got any in his mouth. So if he seems fine, I think everything is fine. If you're worried though, give 111 a call.

Mjlp · 23/11/2019 15:52

...Just seen you've already called 111.

Andysbestadventure · 23/11/2019 16:13

@thefluffysideofgrey babyoil is toxic when ingested ffs. Educate yourself.

Crinklesmile · 23/11/2019 16:37

Kids are such monkeys. My kid took a swig of nail polish remover at 18 mo, rang poisons and A&E and after all the advice, was grand. I was a wreck- it happened at a friends house and I was right beside her!! It was sitting beside sofa, never noticed but my beady eyed kid did! Hope you are both ok xx

CathyandHeathcliff · 23/11/2019 16:40

I think we are out of the woods now as it’s nearly 9 hours since.

OP posts:
CathyandHeathcliff · 23/11/2019 16:41

I can relax a little nowx

OP posts:
RolytheRhino · 23/11/2019 18:55

Keep a close eye on him until 24 hours have elapsed.
