AIBU?

To say something how they eat

Going on holiday with my PIL for 2 weeks...

we saw them tonight and we were all at the table having some food and while I already knew my MIL eats loudly (think a lot of lip smacking and loud finger suckings, honestly it's OTT) because I spend a lot of time with her, my FIL was even worse!

They were both making the most atrocious noises, it was honestly quite shocking... my DP was looking at me like 'OMG' because people eating loudly does annoy him anyway and this was particularly extreme.

My ex husband also eats like this too.

I can understand that maybe you don't notice if you're always living and eating alone and I might gobble a bit if I'm hungry and alone but when I'm around other people I'm conscious that I'm eating quietly out of respect for them... not in an unnatural or uncomfortable way but just polite.

I think that this will drive me absolutely insane on holiday and not to mention I think i will feel a bit embarrassed if they eat like this in public which I'm assuming they do because my MIL has always eaten like this when I've see her.

AIBU to ask them to eat with their mouths closed and quieter?

I have a friend I would like to go on holiday with but I can't because of her noisy eating 🙈

Leave it to your DP to tell them.

I was just saying my exH eats just the same... my dd said 'why does daddy eat so loudly it's horrible'

I can't understand how and why people eat like this?

Do people who eat like this know they do? Or is it subconscious?

Let DP tell them. My dad's the same, he can eat even yoghurt so the neighbours can hear! I told him a few years ago and he went nuts and didn't speak to me for about a week - but is now still much much quieter and considerate.

Uuuuurrrggghhhhhh.... I could not be in the same room!
Next time maybe take photographic or even better video evidence and then show them..?

My dp eats like this, actually he is like a bloody animal, sometime his face if so close to the plate he might as well put the fork down and lick it up like a dog. God forbid we have something a bit runny like soup, then it's just constant slurping. He also slurps every mouthful of a cup of tea, apparently its better like that.
I honestly don't know why we are together.

Do they have dentures?

Say something like 'it sounds like you're really enjoying that!'

So irritating

Poor you, this is difficult. But great that your DP agrees with you. I was raised by a noisy gobbler DM and it set my teeth on edge. I absolutely used to hate Sunday lunch and I still feel outraged by her eating. I never said anything though because I knew it would incense her and i also wondered if I was being over-sensitive.

On balance I wouldn't say anything but I'd try to avoid eating with them.

It's up to your DH to tell his own parents!

It is hard, it genuinely makes me feel sick. I can ignore embarrassment pretty well, who cares what complete strangers think? But I can't eat surrounded by noisy eaters.

‘FIL’ hums whilst he eats. It infuriates me and makes me feel ill 😂 DP doesn’t even notice, I think he’s used to it.

I probably wouldn’t say anything in my situation because FIL can be a little sensitive to criticism and it’s not worth it.

No. I'd have to cancel. I couldn't and can't bear it.

I loathe bad table manners.

Never allow yourself to be embarrassed by another's actions. Why would anyone judge you for eating with loud eaters?

I wouldn't say anything. However depending on the noise or might affect my appetite. I'm a little "sensitive", but I'd leave them to be them.

You mentioning this to them will kick off WWIII, so if you do, plan to be uninvited for the holiday. The only one who can try to approach this is your partner, although I doubt anything will change even if he does. People this disgusting are completely oblivious as to how gross they are. I feel for you because there is NO WAY I could eat anywhere near them.

Oysterbabe · 22/11/2019 21:17

No you can't say anything to them unless you want to turn them against you.

I can’t bear loud eaters. I suffer terribly with misophonia and I’d have to leave the room if they did that around me.

I honestly couldn’t go on holiday with them.

Report
TheMidasTouch · 22/11/2019 21:22

No. Don't tell them. I'm pretty sure that won't end happily (unless you want to fall out so that you don't go on the holiday together).
Would they take it well from DP doing it in a jokey manner perhaps saying they sound worse than kids?

I actually would be so distressed by that it would kill my appetite.

I appreciate that may sound ridiculous but I just can't be around awful manners.

I can honestly say I would bail on the holiday rather than share a table with them.

You know best OP if you can do a week of that.

Me? I'd rather be in work.

Good luck💐

My MIL constantly hums loudly when she eats, drives me crackers. Told her once, made no difference, it is a habit and she will never stop.
