Christmas spend

TheTrollFairy · 21/11/2019 12:59

How much do you spend on nieces and nephews at Christmas? And is this the same amount that you spend on children who you are friends with the parents?
Obviously I know that income will dictate some of the amount that you spend. I get anxiety around how much I spend which I know is stupid but I can’t really help it.

Also be interested to know how much you spend on your own kids too and does the spending limit include things like stocking fillers and Christmas Eve boxes (for those of you who do them?)

I dont buy presents for my mates kids. And i sometimes buy gifts for neices and nephews depending on whether i am spending the day with them. I have no hard and fast rules.

MsPotterPepper · 21/11/2019 13:06

Just spend within your own budget. It should matter how much things cost, just get something that the recipient will like and that you can afford without stretching yourself.

MsPotterPepper · 21/11/2019 13:07

Shouldn't *!

MsSquiz · 21/11/2019 13:07

We spend £50 on each nephew and niece for birthday and Christmas (3 children whose birthdays are all in December)

We spend anywhere between £10 and £30 on my best friend's daughter (also my goddaughter)

I am due our first child on 19th December, so not sure what our plan is going forward for budgeting for gifts. This year we have wrapped some gifts in her stocking (for my benefit Grin) which includes 3 books, a bunny rabbit cuddly toy and a first Christmas bauble

InDubiousBattle · 21/11/2019 13:12

We spend around £30 each on nieces and nephews, around a tenner each on friends dc and between £150-200 each on our two dc (4 and 5).

earlydoors42 · 21/11/2019 13:13

I spend up to a tenner on nieces and nephews (I have 6). I don't buy for the children of friends - we made a pact to just do birthdays. The only other child I buy for is my cousin's little boy and I spent £5 on his present.

Hellohah · 21/11/2019 13:16

I spend up to £20 on niece/nephew and friends children.
This year I've spent between £14 and £20 on each of them. The teenagers have gift vouchers/money and the younger ones have 2 gifts each. I planned it well this year and got everything in some sort of sale.

I will spend between £250-£300 on my own DS (who is 14). When he was younger it was less than that.

isseywith4vampirecats · 21/11/2019 13:17

i dont spend any money on nieces and nephews they are all grown adults with their own children, i give my grandchildren money to add to any other money they get so they can get something they want, my three adult children get a small present each plus their partners, and i get two presents for the ladies i work with each day as we have been friends and colleagues for over 7 years, OH i get gig tickets as he has everything he needs or wants

runoutofideasnow · 21/11/2019 13:17

It depends tbh - probably £50 each.

I don't particularly have a limit for my son, we just decide what we're buying and get it. He's only 3, this year he's getting a Thomas superstation, a new bike, some new bath toys and some new dinosaurs.

We have a lot of friends with children, we don't buy for them for Christmas as it would be never ending. If we're going to someone's house during the Christmas period I would take a token gift for the child's

TheTrollFairy · 21/11/2019 13:19

I agree that it shouldn’t matter and it probably doesn’t matter to the adults and the kids won’t know at young ages anyway. The issue is totally with me. I have anxiety around what people think of me and this feeds into pretty much every aspect of my life (not just Christmas presents). I get gifts that I think the person will like and I have never judged the gifts bought for my own DD or wonder what people spend on her. I’m just happy that people want to buy for my DD and even if they don’t or can’t afford it then I don’t judge them. I try and rationalise these things when I’m getting gifts but it still always leaves me feeling worried.
I am always asked for gift ideas for my child (but when I ask her she doesn’t even know what she wants so I can’t even get an answer from her) and I usually just suggest a book or a puzzle which can be bought cheaply because I know she’ll enjoy them.

Sorry for the rambling post Grin

£20 at Christmas, £15 for birthday. Or was it the other way round? There was a fair bit of mix and match and combining and handing them over at the same time (fine for the January birthdays, not so great for the summer ones.... Grin).

Did the same thing for children of longstanding friends whom we saw once a month till weekends got a bit busier. Other friends' children we have never met. (We're grumpy old gits so haven't really made Proper Friends up here.)

Children concerned are currently aged between 14 and 19, except for nephew on the other side who's almost 9.

For our own children we generally spent between £50 and £100 depending on what ideas we had. This did not include stockings.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 21/11/2019 13:25

£20-£25 ish on each of my 3 nieces and nephews, plus the same again for birthdays (all 3 of their birthdays are immediately after christmas)

ParkheadParadise · 21/11/2019 13:27

I have 25 nieces and nephews, also 8 great-nieces and nephews.
I now only buy the one's that don't have kids. I spend £50 on them. I spend £30 on great niece's and nephews.
£30 on godchildren (5).
I'm so fed up with Christmas I put money in a card, imagine shopping for that lot😆😆

Dishwashersaurous · 21/11/2019 13:27

£10 on close friend kids birthday, £5 for class party birthday. Don’t do Christmas

£100 per own child which should cover everything but this year might go 20 or 30 over in total

MotherOfLittlePeople · 21/11/2019 13:29

We say £10 a child (nephew or niece) at Christmas as there is for us 8 kids plus our own two. If we can really afford to we go over that budget for them but we make sure we buy everything for our children first.

IggyAce · 21/11/2019 13:37

I spend about £15 on my niece and nephews. I buy for my best friends two and by agreement I spend £5 on each of them and my friend does the same for my dcs.

Ski4130 · 21/11/2019 13:38

We buy a gift for Godchildren (£10 each) and then do secret santa with nieces and nephews which has a £20 limit, so they each get one present - there are 8 of them, plus 6 adults, and we all do secret santa on boxing day when we're together.

They all get a big number of presents from their grandparents (some, like ours, have 4 sets of grandparents due to divorce/remarriage) so we all decided a while ago that they were getting swamped with stuff, and secret santa is a fun way of cutitng back on that. Even with doing secret santa, there are 5 of us (as in dh and dc) so we spend £100, and we also do an adult secret santa with dh's family that has a £50 limit, so that's another £100. It's stil way way less than I spent on assorted last minute panic buys for them all before we decided secret santa was the way forward.

Birthdays are different, and we spend up to £30/40 per child on something they really want.

user1487194234 · 21/11/2019 13:42

Spend a lot more on nieces and nephews than friends children
Spend around 50 on younger nieces and nephews ,more on the older ones because I like to get them something they really want
Spend about 300 on each of own DC

Brimful · 21/11/2019 13:48

Sadly I don't have family but I'd love to really spoil any if I did. Anyone want an Auntie?

namechangenumber2 · 21/11/2019 13:51

Aww @Brimful Thanks

MegaClutterSlut · 21/11/2019 13:52

I have 6 nieces and nephews and spend up to £20 on each. Friends ds up to £15 and Spend about £150 ish each on ds and dd

GameSetMatch · 21/11/2019 13:53

My niece on my husbands side just £25 because they only spend a small amount on our children so I don’t want her parents to feel obligated to spend more. My Nephew on my side of the family £50 for birthday or Christmas, my brother is extremely generous and we only buy for the children.

StylishMummy · 21/11/2019 13:53

Don't buy for any friends kids as we were literally swapping tat and a selection box

Niece and nephew £20 each per Christmas and birthday so £80 a year in total

TheTrollFairy · 21/11/2019 13:57

Aww @Brimful Flowers.
My idea of spoiling a child is spending time with them rather than monetary things (which is why part of me struggles with how much to spend). My DD loves nothing more than playing or cooking with her aunties and uncles
