Why are MN allowing political advertising on their website?

I've just been advertised this and I'm not happy at all. Firstly, I wouldn't vote Conservatives if they paid me. Secondly, I think it's underhanded for your advertising campaign to be based on slandering other parties.

MNHQ - sort it out!

Why are MN allowing political advertising on their website?

Seconded

Simkin · 21/11/2019 12:27

thirded.

Better than all those obvious paid political trolls who never get deleted though.

Simkin · 21/11/2019 12:28

Although it kind of backfires because higher taxes = more public spending and two more referendums = democracy in action so, y'know...

Lockheart · 21/11/2019 12:28

Where are you seeing these? I've never seen any political ads (of any persuasion) on MN.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/11/2019 12:29

You might have more luck posting in site stuff. MNHQ might not spot this for a while.

Herocomplex · 21/11/2019 12:31

Don’t we all get different ads, depending on our browsing? I’d be surprised if everyone’s getting airport parking in Amsterdam like I am right now.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/11/2019 12:31

I am getting a local go kart venue.

PBo83 · 21/11/2019 12:34

I don't really have any objection to political adverts. It's no different to having posters in windows, election broadcasts, MP's on TV. Of course every party is going to promote themselves and find fault with opposition policy.

It's our job as voters to do our own research and make the decision based on our own opinions. Political propaganda is everywhere at election time, if anything it is a positive thing as it might engage some people in political debate.

Lockheart · 21/11/2019 13:07

I'm getting the mothercare black Friday sale. Fuck knows why as I don't have children Grin

MonnaLIza · 21/11/2019 13:15

I agree with you OP - that's not on! I am getting cake adverts probably because that's all I talk about :)

MonnaLIza · 21/11/2019 13:17

@MaMaMaMySharona I am also in full agreement on basing campaign slandering other parties - really poor form!!

araiwa · 21/11/2019 13:21

People dont use adblocker??

Everanewbie · 21/11/2019 13:23

Is it the fact that it is a political advert that you object to, or the fact that it's an advert from the Conservative party?

Lockheart · 21/11/2019 13:23

@araiwa not on my phone I don't.

Shannith · 21/11/2019 13:41

Sigh. It's not MNHQ. It's all sites that use cookies. Third party ad services such as quantcast then serve ads based on your online activity.

Very few ads are served directly from and advertiser into a site. If they are they tend to be marked as sponsored content.

The rest are based on cookies, served by firm who sell a particular audience to advertisers.

So unless you manage all your preferences all the time you are being tracked and served ads to persuade you to do something/think something.

It's how the internet makes most of its money (not all, but most)

It always amazes me that people don't know this.

Herocomplex · 21/11/2019 13:48

@Shannith my fave is when people complain about getting ‘Unwanted’ Adult Content.

Butterisbest · 21/11/2019 14:00

Totally agree Shannith, it's the users online activity that generate specific adverts.
I access Mumsnet on an iPad and I don't get many adverts. Another trick with the iPad is switch the microphone off, then your speech won't generate ads. For example on holiday with friends, she had terrible mosquito bites, we discussed them at length trying to find a solution to her pain and itching. I was getting constant ads for mosquito zappers. I switched the microphone off and the ads stopped. Coincidence? I don't think so.

spacepyramid · 21/11/2019 14:17

This is why I use ad blockers on all my devices.

MaMaMaMySharona · 21/11/2019 14:21

Thanks for explaining to me PPs!

I'm still fuming it's being advertised to me - hate the Tories and always will.

I obviously wouldn't be as offended if it was a different party, but I still think this form of slanderous advertising is below the belt and doesn't have a place in modern campaigning.

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 21/11/2019 14:26

It doesn't bother me. I've been getting that ad, but then I've been googling a lot about the various election policies of all parties, so that's not surprising. I'm also getting ads for cat water fountains ... Are you getting those too OP?

PBo83 · 21/11/2019 14:32

hate the Tories and always will.

I obviously wouldn't be as offended if it was a different party

So you are offended by seeing a view that differs to your own?

SilverySurfer · 21/11/2019 14:38

Unless you're incapable of critical thought a Tory ad would not change your mind any more than a Labour ad would change mine as a Conservative voter. Your suggestion that it would be ok if it was Labour but not Tory is all I need to know about you.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 21/11/2019 14:41

Just in case anyone missed what @PBo83 said, here it is again.

*I don't really have any objection to political adverts. It's no different to having posters in windows, election broadcasts, MP's on TV. Of course every party is going to promote themselves and find fault with opposition policy.

It is important people learn to take responsibly for their decisions. Should they decide to blindly believe everything they read, they should own that. In an ideal world parents would teach their children to think critically and question every source, but sadly we don't live in that world.

MonnaLIza · 21/11/2019 14:50

I have objections, however, to a party that is so empty that bases their campaign on badmouthing another party. And that 'pretends' to be an independent fact-checker website...

Butterisbest · 21/11/2019 14:57

but I still think this form of slanderous advertising is below the belt and doesn't have a place in modern campaigning
🤣🤣This is obviously the first time you've ever taken any notice of any election campaign. This form of campaigning has been happening for many many years.
