The fresher the better!

DP and I are taking our new rescue DDog with us to my DM’s for Christmas. I love my DM dearly but she is very precious sensitive to the natural aroma of dog, to the point where I can foresee OTT gagging and passive aggressive complaints about being put off her meal. DM has never been a ‘dog person’.

For context, DDog genuinely does not smell. He is short-haired, raw-fed, bathed and groomed weekly, has daily oral care and I wash his collar when I wash him so there isn’t a lingering ‘doggy’ smell. Our house doesn’t smell of dog, either.

The current shampoo we use for him is unfragranced, so whilst he doesn’t smell of dog, he doesn’t smell of anything else, either. I think for my DM to not go OTT on the ‘dog smell’ comments, DDog needs to actually smell of something lovely.

So, AIBU to ask you how I can get my DDog smelling like heaven so my DM has nothing to comment on?! TIA Grin

Johnson’s baby shampoo suits mine very well!

I also buy a spray on dog deodorant spray from amazon that smells nice but not over powering. Allows me to stretch baths out!

Hagbeth · 20/11/2019 15:00

I use this one, it has a lovely mild fragrance and rinses out easily. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00ITJEBQ8?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I actually use head and shoulders on ours, and smells lovely for up to 2 weeks after bathing. ( long haired large breed). I use the 2 in 1 and their coat is lovely and shiny as well as smelling lovely.

Pet Head - Dirty Talk Deodorising Shampoo is very good.

Breathlessness · 20/11/2019 15:33

Is that the pink one? I use the pink Pet Head on mine.

SirHumphreyDrinkalot · 20/11/2019 15:35

Does the dog perfume leave a bad after smell? My dog groomer sprayed my pooch one time and it was fine for a day and then 😷

WhoKnewBeefStew · 20/11/2019 15:39

I use Johnson's baby shampoo too.

Breathlessness · 20/11/2019 15:40

There’s a local dog grooming place that offers their own range of scents they will ‘spritz’ your dog with. They will also paint their nails Hmm

Wolfiefan · 20/11/2019 15:42

I’d stay home with the dog. Any scent could trigger an allergic reaction.

recrudesence · 20/11/2019 15:43

@Breathlessness

Yes, in a pink bottle.

Breathlessness · 20/11/2019 15:51

It definitely improves the smell of mine. She rolls in (or eats) shit of many varieties. It’s not overpowering.

Muminabun · 20/11/2019 16:08

Dirty beastie made the dog smell of flowers after she had rolled in fox poo.

CaptainCabinets · 20/11/2019 16:39

@Wolfiefan should we just never leave the house again, by that logic?

We use Pets at Home puppy shampoo - it comes in a black bottle with a pink label on it. One bottle lasts us about 12 months or so :)

It works great for us but he's not a particularly smelly or hairy dog.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 20/11/2019 16:46

Hi OP. I’m a dog groomer. The shampoo we use is called ‘dirty beastie’ as a previous posted mentioned. I’m not sure if it’s available in smaller bottles than we get.

I recommend whatever shampoo you use, dilute it in a jug and use a shower poof scrubber to get it to lather up. It also gets the coat cleaner.

We also use dog cologne. It’s quite strong smelling and lasts. Masks a lot of smells and some people spray it on their dogs bed too.

Wolfiefan · 20/11/2019 16:58

@CaptainCabinets no but you probably shouldn’t bring your dog to other people’s houses if they don’t want it or its smell there. Confused

CaptainCabinets · 20/11/2019 16:58

Thank you all!

Dirty Beastie is the one for us, I think! He’s also got a lovely new Christmas jumper to wear to Nanny’s house Grin

@Wolfiefan

“Other people’s houses” Hmm

It’s not as if I’m bringing him unannounced to a stranger’s house; it’s Christmas and she’s my Mum! Also as previously mentioned, he doesn’t actually smell, she’s just convinced that all dogs stink.

Also, she invited him.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 20/11/2019 17:02

I suspect you were invited. Mum or not if she doesn’t like doggy smells then I wouldn’t take him. Because dogs do smell.

Yep stinky hound on my lap. Looking at you. Grin

CaptainCabinets · 20/11/2019 17:07

@Wolfiefan “What shall I get DDog for Christmas dinner?” definitely implies that he is invited Hmm

I’ve just given him a big sniff and I honestly can’t smell anything other than my own perfume on him from where I hug him too much Blush

She just has an irrational fear of ‘dog smell’ after we lived next to a STINKING Akita for years!

CaptainCabinets · 20/11/2019 17:10

Also as is MN custom, can’t have a thread about a dog if you don’t post a photo of said dog! Smile

Witchonastick · 20/11/2019 17:17

I’ve tried several, but the best I’ve found is Fox Poo shampoo. My dog is a stinker, long haired and likes wallowing in ditches and rolling.
This stuff leaves him smelling sweet for a week.......if I can keep him out of ditches for a week Hmm

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 20/11/2019 17:22

Some people don’t believe all dogs don’t stink. But as someone who cuddles lots of other people dogs every day (job perk!) I agree. Some are so stinky, and on others all I can smell is their owners perfume. Which I think is lovely Smile

AaaaaaarghhhWhereAreMyKeys · 20/11/2019 17:23

We like Dog’s Body shampoo. Ddog uses the tick and flea one, it leaves her smelling fresh for quite a while after her bath.

PenguinsOnParade · 20/11/2019 17:30

There's a groomer in a town near me who launched their own range of grooming products and they all smell amazing. Search for Henry and Co Organics, I'm sure you can order online.
