The fresher the better!

DP and I are taking our new rescue DDog with us to my DM’s for Christmas. I love my DM dearly but she is very precious sensitive to the natural aroma of dog, to the point where I can foresee OTT gagging and passive aggressive complaints about being put off her meal. DM has never been a ‘dog person’.

For context, DDog genuinely does not smell. He is short-haired, raw-fed, bathed and groomed weekly, has daily oral care and I wash his collar when I wash him so there isn’t a lingering ‘doggy’ smell. Our house doesn’t smell of dog, either.

The current shampoo we use for him is unfragranced, so whilst he doesn’t smell of dog, he doesn’t smell of anything else, either. I think for my DM to not go OTT on the ‘dog smell’ comments, DDog needs to actually smell of something lovely.

So, AIBU to ask you how I can get my DDog smelling like heaven so my DM has nothing to comment on?! TIA Grin

I can’t believe you would take the dog to her house when she doesn’t like dogs. I wouldn’t. And neither would I be spraying or bathing my dog in something that could well end up irritating the skin. An emergency Christmas veterinary dermatology appointment? That’ll be both stressful and expensive.

OP has said that her mum has invited the dog.

OP...Just came into see if there was a photo...you didn't disappoint. He's gorgeous.

@Wolfiefan I’m going to assume reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit. She doesn’t dislike dogs (she’s not a ‘dog person’, but that doesn’t mean she actively dislikes them), she is just worried that they all smell. She has met my DDog several times and has explicitly invited him and asked what he wants for Christmas dinner.

How did you know your dog wouldn’t be sensitive to the shampoo you chose before you used it? Smile

Hmm that’s a little dramatic. OP is asking for dog shampoo recommendations. No one would ever bath their dog if it was that risky.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 20/11/2019 17:42

Also, just wondering what's on the menu for his Christmas dinner? 😂

CaptainCabinets · 20/11/2019 17:43

@MonChatEstMagnifique thank you Grin

He’s an absolute dote, such a gentle baby.

Dirty Beastie is great as already mentioned, good choice! It doesn't lather fantastically but that's normal for it and it still works well.

I've heard good things about Animology Fox Poo shampoo for odours too, though never tried it

It does if you add it to water and use a shower puff. The only shampoo that doesn’t lather in my experience is malaseb medicated shampoo.

It sounds weird but I love making stinky dogs smell nice. I get some weird satisfaction from it. I’ll shush now!

cockerspaniellover · 20/11/2019 17:57

@CaptainCabinets We use bog standard baby shampoo for our dogs as we've found dog shampoo to be #1 quite expensive! & #2 makes them itchy if it's too scented.

tomboytown · 20/11/2019 18:01

I use sanex, smells lovely

MonChatEstMagnifique · 20/11/2019 18:02

He really is a beauty. He sounds like a lucky boy to have you now.

Witchonastick · 20/11/2019 18:17

CaptainCabinets · 20/11/2019 20:02

@youwillbepk I have that one too and it smells great! The baby fresh "cologne" is also lovely to go on afterwards.

Thanks for the tip above about lathering, PP.
