Putting cups back into cupboard upside down

Duggeeismysaviour · 19/11/2019 14:02

When they stay at ours (live abroad) , my in laws insist on putting cups and mugs back in the cupboard upside down, despite everything else in there being upright.

When I help out in any friend or relatives house, I go with the system they have.

Every time I open the cupboard and see one or two lone cups upside down, I have to quell the rage. It's like a passive aggressive "our way is the right way". Trust me, it's deliberate as they are extremely organised tidy people, who don't do things unthinkingly, like throwing a few cups into the cupboard.

This is sort of light hearted! And I know, many people will be along shortly to point out that I should be grateful for the help I get, and I truly am. But I cannot get past it, and I think it's because of the way they are and their personalities, which are quite unintentionally domineering. I honestly start to feel a little like a child in my own home when they are here. This, without further long explanation regarding their personalities, is perhaps why it gets to me so much.

Would this bother anyone else? How can I let it go before I snap in a pregnant hormonal rage?!!!

I love how the thread is about people disrespecting someone's house and rules (yes lighthearted) and posters fall over themselves to tell the OP SHE Is wrong.

So you would reorganise cupboards at your friends and relatives too? Grin

If people can get so uptight about such trivia it's no wonder that there are far more people with mental health problems!
There's no such thing as the 'correct' way to put a toilet roll on, there's your way and another which you deem to be wrong!

Ha this reminds me of one of my exes dad. He would have everyone tin cup etc perfectly lined up in the cupboards, even folded his carrier bags.
I used to purposely mess up the order and unfold carrier bags to piss him off for no good reason other than it tickled me.

You're simply an obnoxious person, hopefully some random person will come along and interfere in your home!

Aposterhasnoname · 19/11/2019 14:51

Having taken my favourite mug out of the cupboard to find it occupied by a spider the size of aragog big brother then I can assure you that upside down is the correct way.

mommybear1 · 19/11/2019 14:51

I used to just shove them in the cupboard any old way but SIL who works in catering educated me re dust, bugs and people's fingertips grabbing the top of cups if stacked open and not upside down. I'm a convert. All glasses and cups are stacked upside down Grin. I also have cupboard liners so no dust issues for me Wink

Bumfuzzled · 19/11/2019 14:52

My mum does this. She used to live in Australia and says it was to stop spiders crawling into your cups. She also told me (when I was little and very impressionable) that she always lifted the loo seat to check for snakes. I’ve ignored her crazy spider upside down cup habit but decided to adopt the rational toilet seat check Grin

TheMidasTouch · 19/11/2019 14:53

Mine aren't upside down. They are the right way up. Grin

CherryBathBomb · 19/11/2019 14:53

Definitely upside down to stop spiders giving u a fright

BarbourellaTheCoatzilla · 19/11/2019 14:55

Why are people's cupboards so dirty that they're getting GRIME on the rims and trapping stale air? Clean your cupboards you scrots, and put away your glasses dry.

You'd hate my cupboards, it's an an upright / upsidedown hodgepodge. Couldn't give a fuck.

stophuggingme · 19/11/2019 14:55

Glue them there upside down

Not at all helpful but it amused me

BirthdayCakes · 19/11/2019 14:56

Oooh - yes - i think this is an Australian thing too!

My parents do it - even when they're over here.. I think its to do with cockroaches?!

mclover · 19/11/2019 14:57

Agree - cups should go the right way up. Not upside down.

ivegotthisyeah · 19/11/2019 14:57

My cups and glasses are upside down 🙈

MonstranceClock · 19/11/2019 14:58

They probably, like most normal people, haven’t taken any fucking notice of what you do with your cups and are just putting them away.

BillieEilish · 19/11/2019 15:00

I thought a cupboard was originally just a 'cup board' with no doors, you put cups upside down on the board to prevent dust etc.

That's what I was taught in the 70's anyway!

This is a hangover from that.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/11/2019 15:00

The bug thing makes sense.

I still don’t like it though.

Boireannachlaidir · 19/11/2019 15:01

OP in future before they visit just turn everything upside down and hopefully they'll think you've changed your system.

Once they've gone, change it all back again.

horse4course · 19/11/2019 15:01

This is why mug trees were invented

soupforbrains · 19/11/2019 15:02

THEY are BU to not obey the house rules of the home they are guests in.

but.... YABU to not store your glasses and mugs correctly.

TheMustressMhor · 19/11/2019 15:02

I would be really angry about this. I know it's trivial but it's your system, and if they are doing it on purpose they are just being arses.

Bumfuzzled · 19/11/2019 15:04

This is why mug trees were invented

The amount of mugs in my house would require a mug forest Shock

BlastEndedSkrewt · 19/11/2019 15:04

I always hated upside mugs until the day I got my upturned mug out of the cupboard & threw it on the floor when I noticed a rather comfy looking spider sitting in it.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 19/11/2019 15:04

My in-laws do the same when they're at my house and I don't like it. They do things to 'be helpful' - like unloading the dishwasher when it hasn't been on yet and putting things in different places. They're nice people but it's different to with your own parents so you can't tell then to bloody stop it so easily/loudly.

Snaga · 19/11/2019 15:06

I'm an upside down cup stacker with a mesh to provide airflow but your ILs doing this is petty and passive aggressive. You know this, don't rise to it. Gain power from knowing they want a reaction and you denying it.

They want a reaction so they can tell you why you're wrong (in their heads). This then means they can lecture you forever more on this and any other "quirks" they think you have.

Ignore the passive aggressive poke and just re-do your cups in the way that makes you comfortable. If you're feeling petty retaliate by purposefully making everything else not quite right...fold towels with a sticking out edge, make a picture frame tilt to one or two degrees. It'll make them tut and huff!

Personally I'd just let them quietly seethe that you still haven't asked why they stack cups differently to you.

BlueKarou · 19/11/2019 15:07

I store my mugs the right way up and can stack them. Upside-down mugs seems utterly bizarre to me.

Your in-laws are rude.

DoubleNegativePanda · 19/11/2019 15:08

Mine are upside down. The insects in Texas are outrageous, and it doesn't matter how clean your house is. The last thing I want is to find a massive beetle or a scorpion in my mug.
