To think that bigotry in is not acceptable just because someone is old

Just had a coffee in Costa, an older group of people came in, whilst getting on with my work I could hear their conversation. In the 20 mins they were present they proceeded to

. Blame the Epstein victims for what happened to them, apparently its ok because they were flown on private jets.

. Claim strictly will be ruined next year by same sex couples.

. Praise Boris Johnson for apparently committing to keep foreigners out.

Aibu to think this type of bigotry is not acceptable because the people saying it are older. Took all my strength not to say something.

If anything the older people commenting agism should be agree with me that the low expectations of older people is in fact agist.

a few observations, (thought I might as well get my pennyworth in...);
I have heard some over 60s women declaim that they were never troubled by sexual harassment or worse, and these girls knew what they were doing/ should have walked away/ told the men where to go.
they say they don't know anyone who is a victim.
I say 1in 3 females at least have suffered harassment or worse, but maybe with their attitudes, those girls/women chose not to confide in them. they reject this idea. no opening tight-closed minds.
worrying about immigration/population, resources etc is not necessarily indicative of racism.
perhaps the elderly who confide their fears to the brown person do so not because they don't see the colour but because they do not equate that with being an immigrant. many british people are brown.
challenging bigoted or out-dated attitudes is tricky; if one could be sure that it might help, raise consciousness, open a thought process, then good. but so often it just becomes an entrenched slanging-match, and hardens attitudes. I don't know. follow your inner self.

@Ilovecupcakke

"To think that bigotry is not acceptable just because someone is old"

There. Fixed that for you.

To make it clear - bigotry isn't acceptable whatever age you are.

BIWI · 19/11/2019 15:31

To think that bigotry is not acceptable just because someone is old

Format fail!

Xenia · 19/11/2019 15:38

My parents were never racist. I think it is jnot a matter of age. Anyone with Christian parents (and no doubt other religions) knows a core tenet of the belive is that people are equal and also parents fought or their parents did in WWII against the racism that was the threat to Europe so most older people were on the side against racism not vice versa. You probably just came across some particularly awful people.

However on the last point the Tory policies are fair and non racist so if anyone is not sure how to vote do vote Conservative for a non racist fair Britain.

sue51 · 19/11/2019 15:42

Xenia, I agree with all you say - apart from the last paragraph.

BreconBeBuggered · 19/11/2019 15:43

I thought the thread was going to be about ageism, funnily enough, ie it's not acceptable to be hold bigoted views on people based on their age. Bigotry isn't acceptable in any sector of the population.

JasonPollack · 19/11/2019 17:32

Lol @Xenia painters daughter?

Tory policies are neither fair or non racist.

PhilSwagielka · 19/11/2019 19:16

Tangent, but why do people genuinely think Johnson is going to get rid of all foreigners? It's not feasible, for one thing.

PhilSwagielka · 19/11/2019 19:18

Xenia, as a Jew, I've had some pretty nasty abuse from Christians about my religion. Plus plenty of Christians are racist - ever heard of the Christian Identity movement or Britain First, going round harassing Asians with their giant crosses?

Gfplux · 19/11/2019 19:24

Bigotry is wrong.

However older people should know better. They are just not thinking rationally.

EXAMPLE.
The Police don’t car about bicycle thefts is often heard from the victims.
Actually they should be complaining that there are not enough Police.

I get so tucked off with the media trying to drive a wedge between the young and the old. Things like "the old people voted leave, the old people have all been he money and the houses" I really don't want to read it here too.

Give it rest. I'm old. I voted remain. yes, I was able to buy my home (which now belongs to my DD) but I also paid up to 27% interest in my mortgage.

Don't you see that playing the old against the young is just another way to divide us?

The establishment win when we are divided.

And when the establishment win, the ordinary people loose

user1471453601 · 19/11/2019 19:40

And "tuked" should read fucked

scaryteacher · 19/11/2019 19:48

I don't understand this emphasis on progressiveness. Sometimes that seems like change for the sake of it, rather than because it's needed. To be equated with 'woke' these days I suppose.

Are older people not fantastic if they haven't fought for progressive causes?

MintyMabel · 19/11/2019 19:55

It isn't ageist to criticise an older person for being racist, FFS.

It is, however, ageist to say old people as a group are generally racist. Or to claim they statistically are without any kind of evidence to support it.

Cam77 · 19/11/2019 19:56

Under 35s were massively pro Remain though, while over 40s were strong Leave. It’s just a fact. But of course there were millions of those who didn’t vote “with” their age group.

Cam77 · 19/11/2019 19:59

Most Leave voters are not racist or bigoted. But nearly all racists and bigots did vote Leave. And now Britain has of course all but left. It’s an unpleasant truth but a truth nonetheless.

HappydaysArehere · 19/11/2019 20:00

I’m old but I am not stupid unlike those idiots you heard. I voted to remain and was broken hearted at the result. I blame Boris Johnson ( a known liar) and all those associated with him on that Cummins led campaign. We won’t have a referendum as the truth is out and the result may well be different. Democracy would give people a chance to finally decide. After all, if you said you wanted to buy a house and then had a dodgy survey report you would have a chance to reassess your situation and intentions. Their remarks said it all - morons and not just old.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 19/11/2019 20:19

Look on the bright side OP, you almost filled your Bigot Bingo Card. Hang around tomorrow for someone waxing lyrical about Farage and you’ll be able to shout ‘house’.

feellikeanalien · 19/11/2019 21:57

As an earlier PP said, there seems to be this "Boomer/Snowflake" rhetoric at the moment.

Older people (however they are defined) are not a homogenous mass any more than younger people.

I would probably not be classified as young by any stretch of the imagination but one thing I have learned over the years is that age does not necessarily bring wisdom.

I think that some younger people do hold these views as well and although we would like to think that as people get older they become more tolerant and respecting of others this is not actually the case.

I also agree that there is an attempt to divide people by age, race, sexuality and other characteristics.

At the end of the day there will always be people who hold views we find offensive. The best thing we can do is call out these views when possible and do all we can to try to put across why these things are offensive.

Ultimately, attributing views to one group of people is not helpful and detracts from the main point which should be to challenge the views themselves.

JasonPollack · 19/11/2019 23:07

I posted evidence further up the thread @MintyMabel

Peer reviewed study no less

ilovesooty · 19/11/2019 23:14

The most bigoted people I know are twenty years younger than I am.

Bigotry is never acceptable whatever your age.

MintyMabel · 19/11/2019 23:21

Peer reviewed study no less

Self reporting, no less.

It does not provide statistical evidence that older people are more likely to be racist.

It shows that when asked, older people are more likely to report that they are.

Younger generations are more aware you don’t admit to it, that it is not acceptable to speak of it.

I have some experience of this phenomenon having worked in a male dominated industry. The only real difference between the young boys and the old boys is the young ones know not to say the outrageously sexist stuff when I’m not in the room. The attitudes don’t vary wildly between young and old.

JasonPollack · 19/11/2019 23:51

OK mabel. Your anecdotal evidence is much more valid than peer review. Hmm

motherheroic · 20/11/2019 07:47

Anyway. I've found that people are more likely to let older people take on with their bigotry because 'No one thinks like that anymore' or 'They'll be dead soon'.
