AIBU to get bunkbeds for guests to stay on...

We move in to our new house in 2weeks, 3 bed semi. Lovely.

Plan was to have the smallest bedroom as a guest room as we have relatives scattered all over the country, they often visit and at the moment have to stay in hotels / campsites.

Dilemma. Smallest bedroom is too small to fit any kind of bed/sofabed/air bed. Its only 2.01m x 1.73m (well, it will fit but then you wouldn't be able to open the door or escape in a fire) argh!

Do we - accept defeat and get a sofa bed for downstairs.

Or, another thought - bunkbeds will fit! would it be unreasonable to expect guests (i.e my 65 year old parents) to sleep in bunkbeds? Grin

orrrr, does anyone have any other ideas. Confused

Is it not your parents who come to stay? If so I would ask what they think.

Personally I would go for bunk beds - a sofa bed in the living room is annoying because they're never that good as actual sofas so you end up with an uncomfortable living space all year round just for someone to use the sofa bed twice a year.

Cohle · 18/11/2019 12:14

I assume the second bedroom is being used for DC? Put bunkbeds in the third bedroom and have the kids sleep there and give their room to guests?

Wannabegreenfingers · 18/11/2019 12:16

I wouldn't want to sleep in a bunk bed, either on the top or on the bottom. I can't imagine anyone above 12 would.

Sofa bed sounds like your best option. We give up our room when we have friends and family stay and sleep on a double height air mattress on the living room floor.

tobebebebe · 18/11/2019 12:17

Second bedroom is for DS who is 2, we've gone all out and decorated it really nicely - a proper little boys room since he's been sleeping in a mouldy box room for 2 years, so that is non negotiable.

I would say bunk beds is fine but for elderly relatives you give up your bed to them anyway so depends if you want to sleep on a bunk bed.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 18/11/2019 12:19

I'm not that fussy as a guest but I 100% wouldn't sleep on the top bunk! I'm in my 30s so it's not like I couldn't (except I sleep walk so might end badly).

Spongeface · 18/11/2019 12:19

I'd rather privacy of bunk beds than in a living room. Can do a nice set up with wee shelves and charging station lights and stuff. Storage under for bags. Saves avoiding living room all morning waiting for folk to gather themselves. Would a day bed maybe fit?

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/11/2019 12:20

Assuming you have children in the middle room I would get a bunk bed for the smaller room and put the children in there when people visit. We have two single beds in our middle room that can be set up as a double when couples visits, it works well.

GoKartMozart · 18/11/2019 12:22

Have you looked into wall beds/ Murphy beds? Great for tiny box rooms.

GoKartMozart · 18/11/2019 12:22

Also, change the door for a sliding/bifold door, the amount of space gained in a box room just by doing that is huge.

HubbabubbaT · 18/11/2019 12:23

I'd put bunk beds there then move into them with my DH when my parents came so they could have a nicer bed if they're that bit older! (Presuming you're still relatively young and in your prime OP - and can cope with a couple of nights in a different bed?)

JusticeForSandra · 18/11/2019 12:24

bunk bed

and swap bedroom for people who might need a better bed, parents or elderly relatives. Normal people will be fine on a bunk bed, it's what make staying with family or relatives quite fun, to have various arrangements!

I always used to give my bedroom when I had a small place, it was so much easier than give the living room to a guest.

scoobyd2 · 18/11/2019 12:25

Could the door be changed for a sliding door - would a bed fit in then?

Crankybitch · 18/11/2019 12:25

Where is the door / window in the room?

Wondering if a day bed that pulls out to make a double would work

tobebebebe · 18/11/2019 12:25

Actually. The bunk beds idea is no good, they won't fit either!

Max length the bed can be is 190cm due to a radiator..

I weirdly didn't think of giving up our bed and us sleeping in the makeshift bed, how bad is that!

I echo what others have said about bunk beds BUT when guests stay they get DS room and he goes in the small room, or you and DH go in the ninja and give up your room.

I've got a double in the nursery (to be) so that me and DP can go in there with the baby and give up the master room for guests. We have another spare too but likely to get multiple guests at the same time.

TheNoodlesIncident · 18/11/2019 12:28

Can you do a regular single bed with a truckle under it? I think Great Little Trading Company do them. Much easier for adults than climbing a ladder or steps (DS's bunk beds have a staircase at the end, which is easier, but they are bulkier than regular bunk beds) or when they sit up in bed, forgetting about the bunk above and clunk their head... I may have done this several times

Like this one. There may be cheaper versions out there, but maybe something like this could work for you?

Wanderer1 · 18/11/2019 12:29

Alternatively FILL the room with a bed or 3/4 bed (shelves for bedside tables) and use a sliding door so that access isn't a problem.

Could you not put a sofa bed in the little room? So sofa when noone stays and open it out for guests, or is the space still too small?

TheMidasTouch · 18/11/2019 12:31

Can the radiator be moved onto a different wall? If not then you've actually bought a 2-bed house if even a single bed won't fit in the smallest 'bedroom'.

I would definitely prefer to stay in a hotel rather than sleep in bunk beds.

OoohRhubarbLetsGo · 18/11/2019 12:31

Get a small shorty double, squidge it in against the back wall, and rehang the bedroom door to open outwards.

On this website they have a bed which is 173x129 cm, which is much better than bunk beds for guests.

TheNoodlesIncident · 18/11/2019 12:31

Love the sad faces Grin

How about your dining room? Do you have space to put a sofa bed in that? (Assuming your gaff has typical 3-bed-semi layout).

bridgetreilly · 18/11/2019 12:31

When your guests come, your DS has to sleep in the small room. You cannot ask adults to sleep in bunkbeds. Get one of those nice single beds that pull out into a double for DS to use normally, and foldup bed/single-sized sofa bed for the little room.

JusticeForSandra · 18/11/2019 12:33

single bed for the kids
kids bedroom for you
your room for the guests?

(sounds more complicated than it should, but kids take less space than 2 adults, and it's easier to give an adult bedroom than a kids one!)
