AIBU to get bunkbeds for guests to stay on...

We move in to our new house in 2weeks, 3 bed semi. Lovely.

Plan was to have the smallest bedroom as a guest room as we have relatives scattered all over the country, they often visit and at the moment have to stay in hotels / campsites.

Dilemma. Smallest bedroom is too small to fit any kind of bed/sofabed/air bed. Its only 2.01m x 1.73m (well, it will fit but then you wouldn't be able to open the door or escape in a fire) argh!

Do we - accept defeat and get a sofa bed for downstairs.

Or, another thought - bunkbeds will fit! would it be unreasonable to expect guests (i.e my 65 year old parents) to sleep in bunkbeds? Grin

orrrr, does anyone have any other ideas. Confused

Move the radiator.
Rehang the door so it opens outwards.

VirginiaCreeper · 18/11/2019 17:20

Get a luxury airbed, guests could use the small room just to sleep in. Then it can be stored away in the garage when not in use and not taking up valuable space.

No practical help here, I'm just here for the diagrams 😍

KittenLedWeaning · 18/11/2019 17:31

Just a thought, but have you considered a futon - takes up less room than a sofa bed and in my experience is on a par for comfort with the average (not top-end) sofa bed.

Instead of inflatables buy 4 of these, perhaps they even fit in the guest room, but they are so much nicer than inflatable ones. But put one on top of the other, one is just too hard.

The radiator could stay on the same wall if you changed it for a flat vertical one like in the picture. Then you'd be able to put in a small double and change doors to sliding / bifold as suggest above.

Yes I agree with madambee, those things are much more comfortable than inflatable. Having to share an inflatable with someone else is just awful.

Mamabear12 · 18/11/2019 19:47

I would get Ikea trundle bed that pulls out to a double. And the sliding door.

Stickybeaksid · 18/11/2019 19:48

We have bunk beds and there is a max weight on the top bunk so not for larger humans!!

Queenoftheashes · 18/11/2019 19:51

Hammock?

19lottie82 · 18/11/2019 19:59

190cm is the length of a mattress, so you could just squeeze that in, without a bed frame.

I don’t think that room can qualify as a bedroom tbh, more like a study.

Mascarponeandwine · 18/11/2019 20:17

I’d get the radiator moved higher, then put a luxury inflatable double air bed in the small bedroom. Even luxury air beds can’t be longer than 190cm?

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/11/2019 21:41

I would move 2yr into small bedroom. Plenty of room there for a cot and has wardrobe for clothes

Then a single bed when older

Esp If you have lots of guests and they can stay in bedroom 2

Love the diagram. Mn loves a diagram 😂😂

Or sofa bed in room 2 and move cot into 3 when guests

Chouetted · 18/11/2019 21:45

Tatami mats and futons, Japan style? Grin

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 18/11/2019 21:54

When your 2 year old goes into a bed you could get a trundle bed for when guests stay and he could go in with you or in a single bed in the spare room

Honeyroar · 18/11/2019 22:10

If the room is that tiny does it even need a radiator? You could remove it and just open the door to warm the room up - let the heat from the hall warm it.

8paws8legs · 18/11/2019 22:11

I wouldn't dream of expecting any adults to sleep in a bunk bed! I also wouldn't want to sleep in any other couples bed or anyone else sleep in mine I think your best bet would be to buy a camper van for your drive, you could even use for your own camping then and it would be their own space whilst there!

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/11/2019 22:14

We (will) have a day bed in a similar sized room. It expands to a small double but is short so doesn’t impact the door.

Confrontayshunme · 18/11/2019 22:15

My DD sleeps on the top bunk for weeks when my DM visits. A bunk bed is FAR more comfortable than a sofa bed or air mattress and she told me so! I thought she wouldn't like it but that's all we have space for at the moment, and it turned out she was really pleased. That said, we got a heavy duty bunk bed which has a higher weight limit than a normal kids one and proper mattresses.

Notthetoothfairy · 18/11/2019 22:22

It doesn’t sound like you have the space for people to stay, so a hotel would be the best option.

ezbem · 18/11/2019 22:25

I would turn the spare room into a playroom, and then let guests stay in the hotel still (que awkward silence) GrinGrinGrin

Rubyupbeat · 18/11/2019 23:51

I bought an amazing sofa bed for my sewing/spare room from sociology, around 3 years ago, the mattress on it is not far off a normal mattress and the sofa is a lovely 3 seater. It was expensive for a sofa bed nearly 2,000, but I wanted a comfortable bed for when my aunt stays.
I remember they had a lot of choice, so maybe worth looking there, especially if it will be on show in your living room.

Rubyupbeat · 18/11/2019 23:52

Sofology

Motoko · 19/11/2019 13:39

Futons and other low mattresses wouldn't be suitable for older people, as they often find it difficult to get back up. Even if they can manage it now, it's unlikely they could in 5-10 years time.

Bunk beds would also be unsuitable, due to reasons mentioned previously in the thread.

We have an Ikea daybed in our guest room, which is a small room although a bit bigger with different door placement to yours OP, and just big enough to pull the bottom bed out to make a double, and if we only have one guest staying, we leave it as a single. It also has storage underneath, where we keep the spare bedding and pillows, for it. People have said it's very comfortable to sleep on.
It would need to go in DS' room though.

Citybear · 20/11/2019 13:41

I don’t object to bunk beds in theory, but just a warning, my husband and I would be likely to share the bottom bunk so get decent ones Grin
