The bible... believe in it or not, everyone knows it.

My question to all you lovely people, should it be censored ( particularly the homophobic section).

Personally I am really torn on this as I am both Bi and Christian.

For
Society has moved on and has realised that people are born LGBTQ plus and no one has control over it
It is also extremely sexist which also makes me uncomfortable

Against
I will always be an activist for freedom of speech and I believe that every human being should be able to believe what they want, no matter how un PC ( providing that they never physically hurt anyone)
Aren’t we then discriminating against Christians? For saying that their beliefs are wrong and should be made illegal?

So what do you think. is it time that this book is changed to meet current moral standards or are we all snowflakes and should just except beliefs of Christianity, that people have a right to believe if they want to.

If you keep editing the Bible every time society progresses there wouldn’t be much left.

The fact that the Bible preaches hatred of homosexuals (amongst multiple other groups) makes me wonder why these groups choose to be religious.

Alsohuman · 17/11/2019 19:09

just don’t feel that sexism, homophobia or Racism has any place now we are entering the 20s.

They’ve never had any place at any time but if you think censorship of what many people consider the word of God will eradicate them, you’re sadly mistaken. If anything, those attitudes would become more entrenched and martyrs would be created.

silencebeforethebleeps · 17/11/2019 19:49

It doesn't. People who hate homosexuals misuse the bible to preach their own message.

TriangularRatbag · 17/11/2019 20:19

The book is the book! You are being unreasonable for wanting to rewrite it

The book is also clearly nonsense, by your own admission. You are further being unreasonable to give it any special status. How about using the same rational moral philosophy that you advocate in your original post in all areas of life, and abandoning the authoritarian outdated nonsense that you find in religious books?

Howtosupportmyfriend · 17/11/2019 21:01

@JacquesHammer and you have every right to believe that all religious writing is fiction. I wouldn’t mock you for it.

Kicking people for believing is not acceptable.

Howtosupportmyfriend · 17/11/2019 21:02

Oh dear - mocking, not kicking...

AloneLonelyLoner · 17/11/2019 21:14

Some people have suggested censoring Virginia Woolf for anti-semitism. This is clearly absurd; she is a product of her time and education. She reminds us of a time and the changes we have made (for better or worse).

The bible is the same.

Rarely does good come from censorship.

Just think, Mein Kampf hasn't been censored and look at how shit it was and is. Even people knew then. Its existence is testament to the shit dumbassery of one man.

Sailing close to the wind

Howtosupportmyfriend · 18/11/2019 03:06

@ReanimatedSGB please read my post above. Your post is incredibly offensive. Would you post something like that about any other group of people?

IAmNotAWitch · 18/11/2019 05:30

Did you want to start a war then?

user1480880826 · 18/11/2019 07:11

@Jubilation that’s exactly what people use the Bible (And other religious texts) for. It’s exactly why homosexuals in religious households are regularly shunned and why being gay in many cultures is hidden. I know plenty of gay Catholics who were essentially rejected by their families when they came out.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/11/2019 09:09

The Bible itself is not averse to a good old bit of book burning on moral grounds. Particularly satisfying if the books are expensive.

Acts 19:19

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

AngelsSins · 18/11/2019 09:26

It’s just a book written by a bunch of self important men, plenty of them about.

I use to respect religion (of all types) despite not believing myself, but then I realised that as a bi women, most of these religions have no respect for me, so I don’t owe them any either.

I think rather than rewriting, it’s better to educate people on why it’s wrong and hateful in many places.

AngelsSins · 18/11/2019 09:30

Being offended doesn’t make you right. If the bible is entitled to preach hate and offensive views, individuals are entitled to dismiss it as nonsense.

77wasmyyear · 18/11/2019 09:49

I think people need to learn to study the bible and not take it at face value. That would stop all the nonsensical ideas being banded about.

midnightmisssuki · 18/11/2019 09:57

It should never be censored. It’s the bible for gods sake! It’s historical. People have gone mad. Let’s all just re-write history, as and when we feel the need to be offended by it.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 18/11/2019 10:31

As I have become older (and grumpier) I've realised that L.P Hartley's words
'The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there' are absolutely true.
Rewriting history by imposing our current zeitgeist as a veneer on the Bible (or any other written material) seems as wrong to me as Bowdler rewriting Shakespeare to take out the parts that would offend the sensibilities of his time.
History does not view Bowdler's actions positively.
Leave everything as is - just don't forget the context under which things were written.

LentilHearted · 18/11/2019 14:32

Just an issue with the 'born LGBTQ+' As babies we have no sexual preference, no sexual identity, babies are not sexual beings. In no way are babies sexually aware and neither can they have a sexual identity or a trans identity, they are babies, all they need is food, love and being kept clean. No mum has a baby and says 'aw look he's gay' because babies can't be gay, trans, pansexual etc. As for the bible, I don't care, it's only ever going to be offensive lies used to try and control people.

ReanimatedSGB · 18/11/2019 15:14

I'm not advocating the burning or censoring of any books, mythological or otherwise. Raed them or don't read them; enjoy the prose or criticize the content - it's entirely up to you.Though, frankly, if you want a book of stories that accurately reflects your view of your imaginary friends, why not write it yourself? It worked for L Ron Hubbard, after all (and founding a religion is as far as I know still quite a good tax dodge.)

longwayoff · 18/11/2019 15:24

Censorship is not good OP and is a short step away from book burning. Contemporary thought is shaped by fashion as much as the rest of life so religions offer an unchanging refuge for believers. Hands off and leave people alone. If those writings conflict with your belief then it's your belief that requires adjustment.

Spodge · 18/11/2019 15:27

YABVU. Censorship is a slippery slope. People should be able to read books however they were written and then apply critical thinking as to whether they are an anachronism or have some value.

SarahAndQuack · 18/11/2019 15:29

I think people need to learn to study the bible and not take it at face value. That would stop all the nonsensical ideas being banded about.

This.

AnyMinuteNow · 18/11/2019 22:47

True Lentils no gay or any other sexual categorisation of baby.

To assert any kind of sexual category on a baby is to my mind wrong, and sexually inappropriate, they are either male or female, at point of conception.

PupsAndKittens · 20/11/2019 22:06

@stealthsquirrelnutkin
Of course I am not trying to ban the bible, I head someone say that it should be banned and wanted to know other views. My friend is also refusing to do something saying that it’s against her beliefs, but everyone else just calls her homophobic and says tough your beliefs are outdated, And that’s a good idea actually and I remember my school did that when we had Bible study class. We will also talk to contact we will also taught the context of the time.
