Prices of snacks at the cinema

Doesn't matter how often I go, I don't think I'll never not be shocked at the prices. My friend pointed out today if they charged a little less maybe more people would buy from them. Instead of being a cheapskate like me that brings their own snacks.

It's to make a profit. I may be wrong but I think they I it get a small percentage from each film ticket sale

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/11/2019 20:04

I always take my own snacks. Although our local cinema isn’t too expensive

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/11/2019 20:04

I'm always amazed at those who buy the snacks there especially the wrapped stuff like sweets and chocolate which can be brought in easily from other places.

ShatnersWig · 16/11/2019 20:05

Cinemas are like garages. The former don't make that much from films and the latter don't make much from petrol. Hence why both charge a lot more than supermarkets for things like sweets, soft drinks etc.

RJnomore1 · 16/11/2019 20:05

It is because they barely cover the cost of showing the film from the ticket price.

churchandstate · 16/11/2019 20:06

I buy my snacks at the cinema. Yes, they’re expensive but I rarely go and I enjoy the experience.

Shuckle · 16/11/2019 20:07

My husband is the manager of a cinema which is part of a chain of 6 cinemas. He tells me that the cinema itself gets around 50p from the sale of each ticket - the rest is eaten up by film companies, distributors etc. They have to charge a reasonable price to cover the costs in running a cinema, if everyone brought their own snacks in, they would close very quickly. Even if you just buy a drink and then bring your own sweets in or vice versa, it really makes a huge difference to keeping your local cinema open Smile

My cinema sell actual food and drinks to eat in the theatre - and bring it to your seat. It's lovely.

Otherwise I am amazed by the amount of people who cannot spend 2 hours without a snack.

1Morewineplease · 16/11/2019 20:09

As others have said, cinemas barely make money from the film ticket sales. They are massive buildings and their overheads are huge. The drinks and snacks prices reflect that.

Iwantacookie · 16/11/2019 20:12

I didnt realise the actual cinema made so little.
I take my own chocolate and drink in but then still manage to spend £30 on popcorn and nachos only because I cant find any that taste EXACTLY like cinema ones.

Housewife2010 · 16/11/2019 20:14

I'm always amazed by the amount of food that people take into the cinema. I'm very greedy but I can easily go a couple of hours without eating ( and don't get me started on.people who eat crisps in the cinema!)

PinkiOcelot · 16/11/2019 20:14

But surely if they were a bit cheaper even, people would buy at the cinema therefore making money.
I think the price is extortionate. £2.95 for a packet of chocolate buttons or Maltesers that you can buy for £1 elsewhere. I don’t think so.

Gingerninja01 · 16/11/2019 20:17

The only cinemas near me are really expensive chain cinemas which charge £15 a ticket plus a ridiculous amount for snacks (£3.50 for a bag of Minstrels, £4 for a large popcorn, £4 for a hot dog!)
I used to love the cinema but it’s just too expensive to go now!

NeutralJanet · 16/11/2019 20:19

My local cinema is round the corner from Home Bargains. I always go there for my sweets and bottles of juice but sometimes I buy the cinema popcorn, there's nothing like freshly popped, warm popcorn.

Shockers · 16/11/2019 20:20

I always buy snacks and drinks from the local independent cinema, but not at the big chains. Tbh though, I rarely go to the big chains.

Moominfan · 16/11/2019 20:24

Pinkiocelot that's what I thought! They had a deal on for a drink, popcorn and a bag of sweets for £14 I'd never pay that kind of money. Try a fiver and I'd pay

OP posts:
Jupiter15 · 16/11/2019 20:25

The popcorn isn’t freshly popped though is it? They pour it into the popcorn counter out of a big plastic packet.
I still love it though.

TryingToBeBold · 16/11/2019 20:28

I have a cineworld card. 10% off food and drink for the first year and then.. 20% off after that. Makes a difference Smile
That and 10% off Starbucks at the cinema and then all the movies you want to watch for just over£18 a month.

Beveren · 16/11/2019 20:28

But surely if they were a bit cheaper even, people would buy at the cinema therefore making money.

This. I refuse to pay a fortune for watery coke when I can get a bottle much more cheaply in the local supermarket. However, if the cinema sold bottles for a small mark-up they'd get the sale.

milkjetmum · 16/11/2019 20:29

Yes last time I went to a Vue cinema I saw someone go into the store room and it was filled with bales of popcorn stacked 10ft high! I thought there must be a few thousand pounds worth of popcorn back there 😂

Curtainly · 16/11/2019 20:30

The local cinema has reasonably priced sweets, pretty much in line with what supermarkets charge; they obviously do popcorn etc but that is also reasonably priced. They must be turning a profit, and there's always a huge queue! The chains though, except for maybe a tango ice blast which is hard to find elsewhere, no way! They invest in the equipment for popcorn anyway (as an example), and popcorn is cheap af- sell it cheaper and a lot more people with buy it. The only way they could really get people to buy sweets is through deals or offering ones the supermarkets don't tend to sell.

2littleChicks · 16/11/2019 20:32

Myself and two DDs went to the cinema today. £27 for the three of us just for tickets. Hell no am I paying another £30 for some juice and sweets.
There's a poundshop next door. Two Capri suns for 56p each and then £1 bag of popcorn. I had a coffee in my travel mug.
Kids feel like they've had £47 popcorn and drinks and I can sit there smug.

Alicia1234 · 16/11/2019 20:36

I rarely go to the cinema and always forget how pricey snacks are there. I went two weeks ago and paid more for snacks than the movie tickets. Always promise myself that next time I must remember to bring my own snacks!

Shockers · 16/11/2019 20:41

That poundshop is very well placed!
