To be utterly annoyed that the Mirena doesn't stop my periods

Need to vent.

Been reading all these lovely reviews on the internet of the magic Mirena Coil and how it's stopped people's periods or reduced them to irregular next-to-nothings.

I have endometriosis and doctors push the Mirena on me like nothing else.

"After 12 months most users only have a light bleed for one day per month and about 1 in 5 users have no bleeding at all"

Had it in 13 months.
Still have extremely regular periods every month.
They're lighter but not spotting & still enough to need proper sanitary products.
My periods also last 10 DAYS now.

Every month same shit.

It's in place properly. I know this for sure thanks to scans/recent surgery I had. Doctors also decided to change the Mirena during my surgery so got a nice brand new top up of fresh hormones. Still same shit.

I can't take estrogen contraceptives because of my medical history and no other progesterone I've tried (mini pill & implant) has managed to settle my periods, infact they were worse.

My gynaecologist asked, "how are you feeling about the Mirena" I replied "I feel like I have no other option" , his reply: "good, keep it in"

I'm so jealous of ladies who manage to get their periods to stop 😭

I'm on Mirena no 5, have had them in constantly since having my youngest. Never had periods apart from when they were starting to run out, but this last one has been a nightmare.

I'm getting periods every 21 days, extremely heavy and am fed up. GP just said they'd be even worse without it and it's probably peri-menopause ............ and joy of joys, I've got it for the next 6 years Hmm

RedSheep73 · 15/11/2019 19:18

Sad Poor you, that's really unfortunate. I would be annoyed too, I love not having periods.

MatildaTheCat · 15/11/2019 19:19

That’s a shame. I haven’t had a period for 25 years so am obviously one of the lucky ones. It’s now acting as partial hrt. I suppose there may still be scope for yours to improve?

Sorry it’s been a disappointment but some of us really have had a brilliant experience with the Mirena.

Auldspinster · 15/11/2019 19:19

It took me 2 years for my periods to stop completely.

FfsWhywhywhy · 15/11/2019 19:22

@Auldspinster did you have irregular periods in-between? I have had a period every 28 days for the past 13 months since having it inserted.

Like you, I've never stopped having periods using Mirena. I have a very similar experience to you with regards length, flow etc. On the plus side, I have much less pain and my secondary symptoms have decreased too. So, although I'd LOVE to have no periods, Mirena has been a positive experience for me (unlike the implant where I bled constantly for months).

Auldspinster · 15/11/2019 19:32

I had super heavy periods that lasted for 3 months at a time before I had my first mirena. I spotted for about 3 months then my periods settled into a much lighter regular cycle, eventually stopping.

I had several from 2004 till last year, I bled sometimes but about 3 years ago it stopped working and I had super heavy periods. Turns out that I had a fibroid which had displaced the mirena.

I had an op (a year ago yesterday!) which removed the coil, excised the fibroid and had my endometrium mechanically removed (the size of the fibroid made the endometrial ablation I was supposed to have impossible). Had 2 heavy ish periods after and next to nothing since.

Stickytoffeeprodding · 15/11/2019 19:39

I had the same experience with the Mirena, slightly less heavy periods, but for longer. FML.
DH has had the snip now because I couldn't be arsed with it any longer. Dear god they don't warn you about the golf ball size clotting that can happen when you have it removed!
Periods are back to 'normal' now, a bit heavier than before, but definitely shorter. I don't miss it to be honest!

ConFusion360 · 15/11/2019 19:45

The Mirena didn't stop my periods either. I switched to it because my GP wouldn't give me the Depo any more. My sister recommended the Mirena as an alternative because it had stopped her periods and made her boobs bigger(?).

I gave up the Mirena not because it didn't stop my periods but because it really hurt DH during sex. Despite a very high sex drive, he wouldn't go near me.

Skinnychip · 15/11/2019 19:52

Reading with interest as i have heavy periods and a 24 day cycle. Period is usually 6 days with a fake ending and then an extra day. It used to be a surprise now i know what to expect. I asked gp what contraception would be suitable and they strongly recommended it, and a friend had waxed lyrical about the mirena coil but i wasn't sure as lots of the effects were "you may.....have lighter/shorter/no periods" ...omitting that its also quite probable you may not!!

noodlenosefraggle · 15/11/2019 19:52

The mirena hasnt stopped my periods either. I had it before and they did completely stop. The next one has been in a year and a half and I haven't stopped my periods. I wonder if mine is the peri menopause too then.

hopeishere · 15/11/2019 19:56

My OBGYN is hoping to fit the mirena for my periods so this is depressing!

Babymamaroon · 15/11/2019 20:10

YANBU. My implant is the same. I hate periods!

ConFusion360 · 15/11/2019 20:11

You might be lucky. It worked for my sister.

ConFusion360 · 15/11/2019 20:12

YANBU. My implant is the same.

And mine. I'd go back on the Depo if my GP would let me.

justthecat · 15/11/2019 20:17

I’m on the combined pill , doc said was too old and fat for other, not had a period in 10 yr. did suffer very badly when younger though

WreckTangled · 15/11/2019 20:21

I had periods with the Mirena too until I got pregnant (helpful) Grin I've never found anything to stop my periods unfortunately so you have my sympathy

zafferana · 15/11/2019 20:23

I know what you mean OP, I'm the same. Had my Mirena for over 3 years now and it has had some positive effects - much reduced PMT, periods generally lighter (although do occasionally have a heavy one), but they have absolutely not stopped, nor have they become regular. I still have an erratic cycle (the reason I had the damn thing put in), so I never know when my period is going to come. I'm peri-menopausal (mid-40s) and just utterly sick of having periods after 33 years of the fucking things (bar two pregnancies and BFing).

Groovee · 15/11/2019 20:26

I refused a Mirena. Eventually agreed to the mini pill🤦🏻‍♀️ was the worst 8 months of daily bleeding, massive flooding and being told oh dear. Finally came off it when I had an ablation on my womb. I get symptoms of periods but not bleeding.

Thornhill58 · 15/11/2019 20:46

Not having it probably would be worse. If you are bleeding that much with it you'll be a million times worse without.

ToPlanZ · 15/11/2019 21:02

Mirena stopped mine completely within 3 months and haven't had one in 15 years.

Sorry to hear it hasn't worked as effectively for you, there does seem to be a real breadth of experience with it, despite my GP just telling me my periods would stop after my first one was fitted. Luckily for me, she was right. Although god only knows what the menopause will bring, the hot flushes have already started.

CAG12 · 15/11/2019 21:11

I had regular periods on the mirena coil

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/11/2019 21:17

YANBU
I still bled for at least 10 days in a 28 day cycle with my Mirena. I felt cheated.
It’s out now and i’m taking the pill so no more periods. Sorry this isn’t an option for you. Is an ablation a possibility?

frenchknitting · 15/11/2019 21:22

There is hope - mine took about 18 months to stop completely. 6 months of constant bleeding, 6 months of "normal" periods, then about 6 months with a gradual tapering off. (I still get endo pain though, but much less so)

GothMummy · 15/11/2019 21:26

It did not stop mine. In fact I bled so heavy with such big clots that the damn thing fell out.
