To be utterly annoyed that the Mirena doesn't stop my periods

Need to vent.

Been reading all these lovely reviews on the internet of the magic Mirena Coil and how it's stopped people's periods or reduced them to irregular next-to-nothings.

I have endometriosis and doctors push the Mirena on me like nothing else.

"After 12 months most users only have a light bleed for one day per month and about 1 in 5 users have no bleeding at all"

Had it in 13 months.
Still have extremely regular periods every month.
They're lighter but not spotting & still enough to need proper sanitary products.
My periods also last 10 DAYS now.

Every month same shit.

It's in place properly. I know this for sure thanks to scans/recent surgery I had. Doctors also decided to change the Mirena during my surgery so got a nice brand new top up of fresh hormones. Still same shit.

I can't take estrogen contraceptives because of my medical history and no other progesterone I've tried (mini pill & implant) has managed to settle my periods, infact they were worse.

My gynaecologist asked, "how are you feeling about the Mirena" I replied "I feel like I have no other option" , his reply: "good, keep it in"

I'm so jealous of ladies who manage to get their periods to stop 😭

I hate mine! I still bleed. And the pain I get is even worse, leg cramps pain in my back.

It’s made me gain a lot of weight, my moods are terrible, I’m bloody depressed, my skins gone to shit. My boobs hurt (why do they hurt so much)

I’m that bloody desperate for my hysterectomy I am thinking of just paying for it privately. I was told By the nhs at 32 wait till your 35...35 has been and gone ffs.

LemonPrism · 15/11/2019 21:44

Yep I was told the same about the implant... sadly it made mine way worse

FfsWhywhywhy · 15/11/2019 21:49

Not having it probably would be worse. If you are bleeding that much with it you'll be a million times worse without.

Before the Mirena I was on no hormonal contraception for 5 years. My periods were on the heavy side but lasted 5 days. I'm not sure it was worse than this considering I bleed for 10 days now

I had mine taken out I had continuous bleeding eugh.

Me too OP! It’s the progesterone for me. Makes me bleed constantly. But I’d rather the coil than anything else and don’t want to see if I just haemorrhage on the copper coil. It’s a PAIN.

Auldspinster · 16/11/2019 00:32

Mirena gave me my life back, it was just the fibroid that put the kibosh on it it.

ActualHornist · 16/11/2019 03:38

I had mine for four years and my periods never stopped either. By the time it was out, I was having a ten day period every two weeks, light enough that tampons and towels were too much but not enough that I couldn’t go without. Awful. Hated it.

ffswhatnext · 16/11/2019 03:54

I had adenomyosis and fibroids and extreme periods. First hospital admission, get the coil fitted. I did. Things got worse, given other tablets, 3rd hospital admission I'd had enough and wanted it out. And was just fobbed off to give it time.

It works for some and others it doesn't.

It's insane that we have to really fight to get them removed. Since when does someone have the right to keep us on meds that we chose not to. Ok I know there are some exemptions, but this isn't the case.

Those 3 hospital stays I was there for around 5 weeks during a 2 month period. Constantly getting told to give it time. The only reason they agreed, I mean come on ffs agreed, to remove it was because from the hospital bed I asked siri - how can I remove a coil.

Shame getting it out didn't change a thing, but at least I had control about what was in my body. After all, my body my choice.

Oh don't want to scare anyone with the hospital stuff. I have other health issues including severe anaemia well before the gynae things.

The mirena helps reduce the build up of the lining of the womb but endometriosis is oestrogen dependant so unlikely to stop your periods but should make them lighter. You say you have tried the pop and implant but you don’t mention dep-provera which suppresses the ovaries and as such oestrogen, if you haven’t tried it might be worth a try.
It can take a while to work but you could leave the mirena in for a while.

HoppingPavlova · 16/11/2019 04:12

I’m sorry, that sounds shit.

When I initially got the Mirena, I bled heavily for a few weeks then just normal bleeding but continuously for 6 weeks, then just spotting for several weeks, then ........ taaaadaaaa StarStarStarNOTHING[starStarStar . I’m on my third or fourth, would need to check and god I love it. Did I mention the no periodsGrin.

I could've wtitten this exact post . I have endometriosis and was given the coil with my last laparoscopy 2 years ago , for the first 6 months all was well but now i come on every month sometimes heavy sometimes light . Also made my mood dreadful. Like you it was pushed on me as a 'last hope' and i only had it because they pushed it on me so much.

I had an appointment with my surgeon last week who has said i need another laparoscopy, i have asked the coil to be removed too which they have finally agreed to after lots of insisting from myself.

Its so frustrating that they push it on so many women and yes it works for some but not others they are quick to push it on people but reluctant to remove it.

Nat6999 · 17/11/2019 01:39

Doctors are pushing the Mirena coil as a cheap alternative to doing a hysterectomy. I was refused funding when I first needed a hysterectomy, they said funding would be refused until I had used a Mirena coil for at least a year, I had endometriosis, my periods were so heavy, lasting 12 days then 7 days off, then start again. I had no sex life despite having a new partner, lived on painkillers, I got put on norethisterone to stop my periods but it affected my mental health, made me suicidal, in the end I had to lie that I was becoming a catholic & get my MP involved to get them to fund a hysterectomy. The thing that made me most angry was the fact that the head of the funding committee was a female GP, I would have hoped for a more sympathetic approach from another woman, but no, she was as hard as nails.

elaine26 · 17/11/2019 01:40

I hated mirena coil and demanded they took it out after I had a flood on holiday (despite taking the pill) it was awful and I was in a right state. I also have endo and I was put on the Evra contraceptive patch (not sure if it would suit you) now I have a period every six weeks instead of every 3 weeks. My periods are lighter and less painful than before. I will never have another coil fitted again
Good luck OP Flowers
