I've just picked up my new multifocals.

just "baby" multifocals they told me. I'm 43. Not major problems but just struggling a bit with smaller print and I read a lot.

OH MY GOD. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR.

Multifocals are the way. If you're struggling just a teeny bit get some and all of a sudden you don't have to have a teeny struggle a dozen times a day.

This is my community service announcement for the day

What's a multi focal?
I just have glasses as I'm finding it harder to read or do craft. But when I look up I feel sick. So I have them perched on my nose to look over.

FFSFFSFFS · 15/11/2019 19:09

A Multifocal is where the magnification is different at the bottom to the top of the lens - i.e. there are multiple strengths in the same lens. So at the bottom of the glasses help me with reading bu the top helps me with distances. They used to be really clunky but the new breed are a thing of beauty.

Not sure how they work if you only need glasses to read...

Varifocals , I’ve just started wearing them too - and I finally notice why my husband is so keen on watching stuff on 4K or HD - it’s amazing to be able to see so clearly

HundredMilesAnHour · 15/11/2019 19:17

Even better than glasses are multifocal contact lenses. Smile I can pretend to myself (and the rest of the world) that my eyes aren't getting old. Wink

GuessWhoColeen · 15/11/2019 19:18

I picked up my first varifocals last week. They are quite good, but my head has to be in exactly the right place then eyes down.

I have put my old readers on today and also peer over the top.

PickAChew · 15/11/2019 19:19

Love my varifocals. Have to put my single prescription reading glasses on for lots of small print or decorating, though because I can't see what the hell I'm doing if I'm trying to paint the top of a door frame or anything not level with my knees, for that matter.

PinkSubscriber · 15/11/2019 19:22

Hundred please can you tell me more about the contacts.?

My near vision has really started to deteriorate and I’ve been struggling along with my normal contacts. I keep now wearing my glasses and peering over the top of them to read print.

Did you struggle to begin with?
Thanks for the heads up about the multi focals ffs. I’ve only ever hear negative options about how they give headaches and make the wearer feel dizzy.

Phineyj · 15/11/2019 19:26

I'm glad they work for you but they didn't work for me at all and I felt rather aggrieved to have shelled out so much money!

Phineyj · 15/11/2019 19:27

Before anyone asks, I tried them twice and for weeks at a time. Gave up after nearly falling down the escalators at London Bridge!

FFSFFSFFS · 15/11/2019 19:27

I've had mine for about 5 hours and am absolutely thrilled. Feels like a weight has been lifted.

Would you like to know all the ingredients in the packet of Digestive's I'm munching? Because I read them all without a moments hesitation.

My optometrist was really good though - they spent ages doing all sorts of measurements before ordering the glasses. LOTS of measurements using all sorts of video machines and other things I think to work out where my focus would be so how the glasses go.

OP posts:
GuessWhoColeen · 15/11/2019 19:30

I had hardly any measurements from Vision Express. Obviously she did some though and I think they are good.

I paid £45 for the frames and £110 for the lenses, because they were on offer with 50% off, I am a cheapskate though.

GaraMedouar · 15/11/2019 19:30

I wear glasses for shortsighted ness and holding off from the varifocals. If I do anything close up (like reading mumsnet on my phone ) I take my glasses off. My perfect vision is probably about 6 inches. I can read the smallest writing on a food package ever, microscopic .
The optician says I’ll need varifocals soon (I’m 50) but I heard they are not as good for driving and can make you feel dizzy. You have to move your head from side to side and don’t have the peripheral vision.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/11/2019 19:32

How long before they feel ok? My last pair were horrible for almost 2 weeks!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/11/2019 19:32

@ GaraMedouar - we are eye twins!

Winterdaysarehere · 15/11/2019 19:34

No blurb about specs is as funny as Billy Connolly discussing prescription windscreens!!

@PinkSubscriber Go and have a chat with your optician and explain the problems you're having with your vision. That's what I did. I trialled multifocal (daily disposable) contacts for a few weeks and they worked well for me. Now I've been wearing them for a few years. There are compromises to be made (your optician will talk you through this depending on your vision) but they work well for me and I certainly don't get headaches etc like some people say they do. Obviously they're more expensive than 'normal' contact lenses. This is the brand I wear:

CheshireChat · 15/11/2019 19:36

I dread my eyesight getting worse as I can't stand any glasses for too long as they all give me headaches and I can't wear contacts every day either.

Lonecatwithkitten · 15/11/2019 19:38

I' m glad they worked for you. They did loads of measurements I tried regular varifocals and indoor varifocals neither worked for. My optician says there are some people who just can't get on with them.

TeenPlusTwenties · 15/11/2019 19:40

My varifocals are great.
I got fed up in sun of having to switch between generic sunglasses and reading glasses (especially on holidays).
My reaction varifocals now mean I just wear glasses all the time, and can read things and do mid distance (and of course long distance) no problem.
Whole family now has reaction lenses - they're fab.

PinkSubscriber · 15/11/2019 19:41

Thanks. I’m due a check up think I might see if I can trial some lenses. At least with lenses if you don’t get on with them it’s not an expensive mistake like glasses.

Allfednonedead · 15/11/2019 19:57

I tried them, they made me feel sick and didn’t really improve my vision much. Fine, I thought, I’m not ready for them, but the optician was really rude to me when I asked for the lens to be changed to normal ones. I was so taken aback.

Allfednonedead · 15/11/2019 19:58

Sorry, that was totally off-topic.

TheMonaOgg · 15/11/2019 20:00

I can't get them for my stupid eyes as my prism is too great. I can only get the old fashioned varifocals with obvious lines. Sodding squint. I hate having separate distance and reading glasses but my eyes are getting too crap to read small writing and my arms aren't long enough to bring it into focus!

Firstawake · 15/11/2019 20:04

Oh, I so need some.
I'm putting it off due to cost.

stucknoue · 15/11/2019 20:08

I'm resisting because my sight is perfect close up, I just take off my glasses
