Daughter (6) has been cast as 'someone's wife' in the Nativity play at school. 'Innkeeper's wife' to be precise.

Err...hello!?

This is fucking not OK! In 2019, to be identified as 'someone's wife'.

Normally I am pretty relaxed about all things school, and I certainly feel sorry for he teachers' workloads, but come on people!? This is 2019 - no woman should be identified by her relationship to a man!? SURELY!

Itching to call them out on this. Itching!

Well...my son is a donkey! ... 3rd donkey at that!

(and here was me thinking there was only 1 donkey which transported Mary about the place!!)

calmpuppycrazykids · 15/11/2019 22:59

My son is a mouse this year
A mouse is one of those even in the nativity
My Ds is my 4th Ds and the parts are slowly getting worse
Ds1 was Joseph
Ds2 was an angel
Ds3 was a star
DS 4 is a mouse god only knows what Dd will be Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2019 23:22

Ask at your DD’s school if there will be camels in the Nativity this year as they always seem to be excluded unfairly

Speciesist bastards!

myolivetree · 15/11/2019 23:28

Has she got a name yet?

Ladyflop · 15/11/2019 23:34

I thought you were going to say your child was male in which I could obviously understand your frustration. But as it is, nah I can't see your issue.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 15/11/2019 23:35

I was cast as part of the stable wall once if it makes u feel better.
Yes, there were not enough speaking parts for all the children, so ten were picked to dress in brown and be 'stable wall'

Selmababies · 15/11/2019 23:36

So, I'm 61 soon and went to a convent school for 11 years (was protestant though)
Just for absolute, no argument about it, clarity- are you all saying that the immaculate conception refers to Mary's birth and not Jesus's?
I've always thought it meant that Mary didn't shag Joseph to beget Jesus.
So does that mean Mary DID shag Joseph?
I'm so disappointed in Mary!

SummerBreezemakesmefeelfine · 15/11/2019 23:41

Short of withdrawing your child from the nativity play there is not much you can do. Another girl will be delighted to take on the part as there are not many parts for girls. Mary and the innkeepers wife are the starring roles for women. I played the Angel Gabriel at aged 5 as a girl, but Gabriel was also a man.

In year 6 at our DCs primary school there was always a really good Christmas play with girls and boys playing an equal number of roles. That is the best way forward, but we love the traditions at this time of year.

metalkprettyoneday · 15/11/2019 23:45

Hmm , If your kids go to a religious school that’s based on Christianity , a lot of things must be based on out dated values .

brimfullofasha · 15/11/2019 23:49

I actually agree with you OP! Why not just two Innkeepers? I bet she put in as much work as him into keeping the Inn!

BingoLittlesUncle · 15/11/2019 23:50

Call them the Landlord of the Inn and the Landlady of the Inn. But the key thing is not who they are, or what they're called, it's that the blasted place is full!

SummerBreezemakesmefeelfine · 15/11/2019 23:55

Teachers put so much work into rehearsing and coaching the children for the Christmas play, costumes etc.. Trying to assign the best roles but ensure everyone is included is difficult.

Your DD can be opted out, but I doubt she would thank you for that. Being on stage will help her to build confidence at an early age.

My son Joseph got Friar Tuck 😂 I think you're being a bit daft tbh.

Jakadaal · 16/11/2019 00:08

Really???! Casual sexism? ShockHmmHmm

JusticeForSandra · 16/11/2019 00:17

This is how girls learn at the youngest of ages that one of the main goals of female personhood is to become some man’s “wife”

What I find outrageous to give girls so little credit! And shocking to imagine what kind of parenting they are submitted to if that's the conclusion they get from playing a role with 4 lines when they were 5 years old.

God helps Left wall number 3 and Rear Camel number 2 - what chance do they have in life!

VaperCut · 16/11/2019 00:21

DC's school doesn't even have a Christmas play. So being the Inn keepers wife still beats being, well nothing.

TriangularRatbag · 16/11/2019 00:29

I was casted as a cow one year.

I was over the moon

I think this may have been an entirely different production though. Did it involve a cat and a fiddle at all?

MLMsuperfan · 16/11/2019 00:30

Were there no udder roles?

There was great prestige attached to being ‘Innkeeper’s wife’ when I was in Infants School as she always got to sing the solo in ‘rat-ta-tat-tat’. What a song.

BritInUS1 · 16/11/2019 01:28

BillHadersNewWife · 16/11/2019 01:58

Why don't they have The Inkeeper and The Inkeeper's Husband?

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/11/2019 02:13

Dont sweat the small stuff ffs

SD1978 · 16/11/2019 03:02

While we are at it- let's rewrite Shakespeare to and call it out. Lady Macbeth is an insult as it's her husbands name. For shame!!!! 🤨
