Why do kids hate wearing coats?

malificent7 · 13/11/2019 08:18

I love voats and csnnot get enough of them...stylish, cozy , cool anf practical. Bit kids seem to hate them.
I had to force 11 year old dd to take her coat in on this cold, frosty morning. Apparently its because school wont let them wear them indoors so she has to carey it around. Stupid rule but its hardly difficult to carry a jacket. The school and dd are being unreasonable aren't they?

Horrid typos again...blame my phone

Control for mine, because we want them to wear them!

treepolitics · 13/11/2019 08:21

It is a faff to carry a jacket and books etc and the cool kids aren’t doing it - a small flouting of authority

PreseaCombatir · 13/11/2019 08:22

I don’t understand why schools don’t let kids keep their coats on when it gets really cold, just seems so authoritarian and OTT.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 13/11/2019 08:23

My DD (and all her friends) refused her coat all through secondary school. Even when there was snow on the ground.

As soon as she went to college she asked for a thick warm winter coat. Confused

malificent7 · 13/11/2019 08:24

It's bizarre...what is wrong with wearing voats indoors...its hardly going to impact on work.

Agggrrr....coats!

I don't really like wearing a coat either. I drive to work and I find it uncomfortable to drive when wearing a coat. Then, it's just the walk from the car to work, so it seems pointless to wear one just for that. I only really wear a coat if we go for a walk or something at the weekend. I've had the same coat for years as I hardly wear it. I prefer just to wear a fleece or thick hoodie, and if it's really cold a down vest over it. It's not very stylish though, but I don't really care.

SquirellTamer · 13/11/2019 08:27

My daughter is 11 and won't wear her coat. Its because they aren't allowed to wear it indoors and she already has a heavy backpack and PE kit bag to carry around. She will have to wear it when it gets really cold though.

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2019 08:28

“My mum’s cold so I have to wear a coat”

Honestly? Just let them get on with it. As my mum used to say about many (not all!) things “It’s your job to provide X. It’s not your job to make them wear/eat/use X”

malificent7 · 13/11/2019 08:36

I know i should pick my battles...but i could see her walk to school in the rain without a coat with a good conscience.

Lack of storage at school. No/badly located lockers. Not cool.
Get your kids a thermal top to wear under their shirts.
Whilst it's barely understandable they're happy to be cold. I made my DD put a waterproof coat in her locker so if it's really raining/snowing she has a coat to wear home.

tillytrotter1 · 13/11/2019 08:42

Nothing new here. When I was teaching my dears expected to be able to dress for Hawaii all year round, the concept of dressing for the weather was an anathema to them, they expected the heat to be on maximium so they could sit in their short sleeved shirts, not even a jumper. Naturally their dopey parents backed them. The problem of carrying stuff around and having nowhere to leave coats does exist but I offered my form a stockroom for their coats and they still refused to wear one!

AmIThough · 13/11/2019 08:47

It is a faff to carry them around. We used to put hoodies under our blazers instead which school also moaned about but let us get away with in the end.

Do the school have lockers?

Alternatively, get her some warm under layers and a pack-a-Mac (or whatever they're called)

PhilCornwall1 · 13/11/2019 10:33

I'll never understand this. My eldest doesn't, but I picked him up the other day and he was complaining he was, in his words, "freezing"!!! I just though, well put a coat on you knob!!

Scoobyloop · 13/11/2019 14:52

They restrict movement.
Hoodies are much easier.

steppemum · 13/11/2019 15:11

it is primarily to do with having to lug them round all day.
And to be fair, I get it, I would hate to be lugging a coat round all the time.

Mine wear theirs when they have to cycle, but not if they can go on the bus.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 13/11/2019 15:13

Its different when schools had coathooks but most are cramped and don't now. Of you have ti tale everything you need around with you all day its really hard with a coat too.

happycamper11 · 13/11/2019 15:20

My dd won't even wear trousers, she's still stubbornly floating about in summer length shorts. I think it's a control thing lol. She called me from her dads in tears at the weekend because he told her she had to wear leggings but he relented when I said I wouldn't be continuing to enforce that at home. No idea why it means so much to freeze but it's her choice I suppose

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2019 15:20

Grin Have you met a teenager?

malificent7 · 13/11/2019 15:23

No lockers at school..coats are not cool are they...even after that "Man's not hot" music video!

Mine dont wear coats either. They arent allowed to wear them indoors and there arent enough lockers for everyone. Dd wears a cardigan and sometimes takes an umbrella if its rainy.

malificent7 · 13/11/2019 15:24

I was a secondary school teacher so i have met plenty of teens!!! I still dont get it!! Coats are the best...but them i'm old!

one of mine puts a hoodie under her blazer and then takes it off at school (and I am sure it is not allowed) That is because a hoodie fits in her bag.
My youngest will take a thin raincoat if she is likeyl to get wet walking up the hill from the train, again it fits in her bag. if the rain is on the way home, then no.

(and they BOTH have lockers)
