Please help me think, I feel really ill with a cold and brain won't work.

I'm normally fit and well, if sleep deprived.

* I am worried about my foot. *

UNRELATED to foot I spent Saturday in A&E being treated & scanned abdo - all fine. Given IV gentamicin. I also have a very nasty cold which is making me feel really rubbish. I'm not flattened ie flu but am struggling to function.

Foot thing is this. I managed to injure the ball of my foot near the toe last Friday. Can't remember how but got glass or a splinter or something, cleaned it, small chunk of skin cut off.

It's been getting more and more uncomfortable over the last few days hurts now even when I'm not trying to walk on it. Might still have something in it eg bit of glass but not sure.

I did a major clean, soak in salt water, etc last night but still very uncomfortable at 5am.

111 online survey said A&E within 4 hours.

WIBU to go to GP or wait 24hrs?

You are all stars.

At the risk of TMI Saturday was suspected to be passing small kidney stone (fresh blood etc, could not ignore) plus feeling very ill.

If sepsis would gentamicin have helped?

Don’t go into school, so selfish to pass on your cold to kids because it ‘goes against the grain’, people like you put kids like my daughter in hospital this time of year, it drives me insane!

When GP opens phone them, if no soon appointments go to A&E for the foot, you don’t want to risk it getting worse and having to take your daughter with you after school. If you phone 111 they may be able to make you an appointment in minor injuries

runoutofideasnow · 13/11/2019 06:57

Tbh op I think the gp will send you to the hospital anyway for an X-ray to see if there's any glass inside so you'd be as well following 111 advice and going straight there.
Personally I wouldn't wait until after 9am.

Novemberblu3s · 13/11/2019 06:57

Novemberblu3s and also, being disabled, would find it tricky given he has to get to work.

I think some things take priority over getting to work. If it was sepsis (may well be nothing) he would be in for a few school runs .

But I get that some things cannot be helped if you have no support. Just please go and get seen as soon as you can (I ha a friend who had sepsis - she is fine now but it was pretty seriously).

Alb1 · 13/11/2019 06:58

Especially with the kidney stone update seek medical advice, no point risking your health at this stage, hopefully they see you quickly and you can get some rest

runoutofideasnow · 13/11/2019 07:01

If sepsis would gentamicin have helped?

Potentially but every time my dad has had sepsis he's been on IV antibiotics for a few days.

Rosebud21 · 13/11/2019 07:02

You've been given advice by 111. Why waste a GP appointment. 1) you have glass in your foot, you need an x-ray to confirm & remove, or not. 2) you have sepsis - gentamicin, 1 dose, will not treat this, you may need intravenous antibiotics, or not if you have a cold. Either way, you need an x-ray

Neome · 13/11/2019 07:05

(Alb1 I think you may be mistaken about people like me passing on colds to your daughter but so sorry to hear she was in hospital 😔)

Oh extremely bugger. Totally see the logic of A&E.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 13/11/2019 07:07

I think it sounds as if there is still glass in there which, as has been said, needs an X-ray to check. Not all minor injuries units are able to X-ray though so it might need proper A&E.

Evennow · 13/11/2019 07:07

Had similar. Foot pierced by metal object, underneath, just below toes. Pulled it out, cleaned it but a few hours later my foot swelled up. Went to walk-in unit and was X-rayed, had wound cleaned, was given an anti-tetanus jab and antibiotics. You may still have glass in your foot - is there a walk-in unit nearby? Otherwise, GP surgery.

RosemarysBroomstick · 13/11/2019 07:07

I agree with dropping dd at school (Early if possible) then straight to A and E.

IdiotInDisguise · 13/11/2019 07:11

Call 111 again for advice and do what they say. It won’t help to waste time waiting for a GP appointment today if this is sepsis.

If you are told to be in A&E on urgent advice of 111, they will be waiting for you and prioritise you.

redchocolatebutton · 13/11/2019 07:12

gp often don't have the equipment to deal with wounds like that.
minor injuries or a&e (often together in hospital) would be more appropriate.
good luck.

SushiGo · 13/11/2019 07:13

I agree with all the others re cray machines the only place here would be a & e.

Do any of the other school parents live nearby? I would be happy to drop a classmate off in the morning with mine, and in my experience other parents are quick to offer if you post online somewhere they can see it, or send a text. then you don't have to worry about the school run.

jackstini · 13/11/2019 07:13

Has dd got a school friend who's parent you could call and they could take her as a one off?

I can't imagine anyone would mind in the circumstances

Then get to A&E

IdiotInDisguise · 13/11/2019 07:14

Let someone else drop DD in school or take her to A&E with you to A&E if there is absolutely no one who can deal with her if you are admitted.

CupoTeap · 13/11/2019 07:15

Come on, stop looking for excuses and crack on. Cancel volunteering, get dd to school and straight to hospital or you will have to write out a thousand times "I must listen to Mumsnet"

ittooshallpass · 13/11/2019 07:23

For goodness sake OP, 111 have told you what you need to do, just do if!

Get DD to school - you, her dad or whoever - cancel volunteering (you’re clearly in no fit state) and get to A&E. We are so lucky to have FREE access to all the medical help and advice we need. Why phone 111 and ignore what they tell you to do?!

Quartz2208 · 13/11/2019 07:24

Ffs A&E with the wound sounding as bad as it does a 10 min GP appt might not cut it

The symptoms you have do link to sepsis with the foot infection so you have to go

HappilyHarridan · 13/11/2019 07:29

How can you not remember how you injured your foot??

chipsandgin · 13/11/2019 07:33

Working out if it is sepsis is probably a priority, we knew a woman who ignored it (because of trying to soldier on) & it didn’t end well sadly. Your health and well-being (& general existence) are more important to your family in the long term than an inconvenient morning..hopefully it isn’t but it would be better to remember this morning as the one where you had to drag a 5 year old along with you for you to be seen at A&E even if it were for no reason, than the alternative. Hope you’ve gone & good luck Flowers

Beveren · 13/11/2019 07:45

Do you have a minor injuries unit nearby?

Nearlyalmost50 · 13/11/2019 07:51

It is very silly to go to the GP, they cannot tell what is wrong with the foot anyway- I'd go to a minor injuries or A and E.

Why is everyone so reluctant to go to A and E but to bother GPs instead?

The pathway suggested is A and E, so go there, don't waste nurse or GP time.

Having said that, we have a great A and E which triages back into a minor injuries/GP service in te same building so you never feel you are wasting people's time and if you go in with a more minor thing, it still gets treated efficiently.

Elderflower14 · 13/11/2019 07:56

FFS NOT ANOTHER ONE!
Why ring and ask for advice if you are going to ignore it!!! 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔

HaveIgoneMad · 13/11/2019 07:57

I ignored signs of sepsis, I made a gp appointment a few hours later - hours not days - and ended up being blue lighted into hospital from my GP surgery. If it sepsis it can go had extremely fast and I didn't even feel that bad in the ambulance really, indefinitely didn't believe I had sepsis.
