Baby's First Christmas Dinner.

Doodlinghalfthenight · 12/11/2019 19:08

I'm wanting my LO to have a traditional Christmas Dinner, so working my way through the list of foods to try leading up to it!

Thinking of making mince pies or buying mini ones and letting them have a tiny bit.

They'll be just over eight and half months old.

Anyone know of any baby friendly ones or whether they shouldn't be eating mince pies?

Just thinking they're quite sugary...

Thankyou!

I wouldn’t do mince pies (sugar over load) maybe jelly (trifle), apple crumble, or rice pudding? I’d assume they could be made with less sugar.

I also get the trying things now, child with food allergies and I do similar things as I hardly want to spend Christmas in a&e after discovering he’s allergic to something else we only eat once a year (cranberry sauce etc). And there’s the inevitable.. bleugh face at something, but that’s why I won’t be making any just for him dishes.

firstimemamma · 12/11/2019 19:33

I'd just let the baby have a bit of your veg and maybe meat on Xmas day and really leave it at that. No mince pies, no list of food to work your way through...

Keep it simple op.

LaurieMarlow · 12/11/2019 19:33

Mine both enjoyed a full Christmas dinner at six months.

And I’d give a bite of mince pie at eight months no problem.

Sweetooth92 · 12/11/2019 19:35

Really not understanding all the flapping here! It’s a snazzy roast with dessert. I wouldn’t prepare for it as such-but I’d also plate him up a dinner on the day without omitting anything and let him crack on. Yeah there may be the odd bit of salt far higher than usual but it’s one day.
My son was 11.5 months last Christmas. Loved fruitcake & mince pies and still adores a full roast. Everything in moderation 😊

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/11/2019 19:54

You can get mini mince pies from M&S. Just brush off any excess sugar and try baby with some pastry and fruit separately. The rest of the roast dinner baby can definitely try.

Doubleraspberry · 12/11/2019 19:56

I have a photo of my son eating a mince pie at seven months. Blush

It is just a roast dinner isn’t it? Bits and pieces of it, whatever they fancy. And if they throw it all on the floor, it doesn’t matter! They will never remember this or understand what Christmas is - they’ll just be enjoying having their favourite people around and lots of twinkly lights.

Celebelly · 12/11/2019 19:59

DD will be 10.5mo by then but we will just plate up a bit everything and let her have at it. I don't think I'd give her mince pie, but she'll definitely enjoy the savoury stuff. Why do you need to work through them beforehand? Does she have a lot of allergies or digestive issues?

Bringonspring · 12/11/2019 20:00

Enjoy your first Christmas with your baby. It is special. Don’t build it up though, those little babies have a habit of wrecking the best laid plans!

I agree with other advice on just letting her try bits!

Jollitwiglet · 12/11/2019 20:01

Have a look at baby led weaning, baby just has whatever you eat. Just be mindful of salt content. At that age they're extremely unlikely to be eating substantial portions anyway

isseywith4vampirecats · 12/11/2019 20:01

my daughter was 8 days old for her first christmas all she wanted was my boob lol

Celebelly · 12/11/2019 20:02

My DD didn't get that memo Grin She can put away loads! She is 95th centile for height and weight though.

Doubleraspberry · 12/11/2019 20:14

My daughter ate an adult portion of pasta at six months in a pub. It was awesome to watch.

heatingsoup · 12/11/2019 20:16

You'll need a bigger teat in the bottle for egg nog.

LittleTopic · 12/11/2019 20:19

@heatingsoup Grin

My DD will be 8 months at Christmas and honestly I think I’m probably just going to bung some steamed veg and a bit of potato and plain turkey onto their tray and see what happens Confused

WaterOffADucksCrack · 12/11/2019 20:31

Just feed them like you would any other day of the year Confused if baby led weaning put a bit of everything on their plate. If not then blitz the elements up.

I wouldn't give mince pies because they're disgusting but if that's what you like crack on. It's one day. The best way to avoid food issues is everything in moderation. MN isn't the best to ask because there are many people with food issues. You'll also get "babies don't need sugar/pudding". Neither do adults but it's nice on occasion!

kateandme · 12/11/2019 20:33

too much sugar.haha please.no it isnt!

MaryShelley1818 · 12/11/2019 20:34

Mince pies are horrible! I’m relaxed about food but definitely wouldn’t give a baby one.
Christmas dinner is no different to other meals - meat, veg, potatoes, chop it up as required - done!
I think you’re probably overthinking this.

rosydreams · 12/11/2019 20:41

my daughter will be 6 months beginning of December so i will be weaning to.Do i just place some plain mashed roast potato, plain veg chunks and some lamb in front of her.Let her play with it or do i just give her veg to play with

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/11/2019 20:41

My baby's first christmas dinner was breastmilk. He has just turned 2, but last year had all the christmas food, including mince pies. He loves them.Grin

Mammyofonlyone · 12/11/2019 20:47

Christmas dinner does not equal mince pies

SoftSheen · 12/11/2019 20:50

You're massively overthinking this... Grin

MustardScreams · 12/11/2019 20:53

Omg the drama about a baby eating a mince pie. The sugar!! There’s nearly as much sugar in a petit filous Grin

Op, babies can eat everything you eat. You just need to watch out for the salt content, choking hazards and no honey. Just stick bits of food on her highchair and let her go to town gumming then.

MamaGothel · 12/11/2019 20:53

I would probably go with ice cream or custard instead of a mince pie but I hate mince pies

slatternyslattern · 12/11/2019 20:57

Honestly op I mean this in the kindest way possible, but just let them have it. I was very pfb with my first, when the next one came along I think they were practically weaned on biscuits and pouches.

raspberryk · 12/11/2019 20:57
  1. She will probably be napping during Christmas lunch.
  2. If she isn't just put Christmas dinner on her tray and let her have a taste of it all.
