I feel so tired all the time and I'm stuck between having some down time without the kids and sleep.

I have just been prescribed b12 due to low levels so maybe why I'm feeling so drained.

I have 2 children 1yo and 3yo and they go to bed around 7.30, after that I do a quick tidy up and settle down with dh to watch t.v. or something. We don't usually go to sleep till around 11. I really feel like those few hours to ourselves keep us sane and happy I like to have time without the kids just to relax and feel like getting an early night is losing out on that but I'm really considering settling to sleep about 9.30 as I'm just so tired and getting up is a killer.

We get up at 7 weekdays and 8ish weekends.
How much sleep do you need to feel refreshed?

Usually just after 10 . I have read nightly since I was around 11 years old and can't sleep unless I do. Lights are put out about 10.30-10.45 ish.

OldEvilOwl · 11/11/2019 17:59

I'm probably in bed by 10.30/11pm most nights. If I'm tired I will have a nearly night maybe once a week. Maybe try that? It doesn't have to be the same every night

EmmiJay · 11/11/2019 18:04

Usually head to bed around half 10 and sometimes asleep just after 11pm. Up at 5:45am to cook DD's lunch, have a coffee and cigarette before she hits the ground running lol. I/We sleep in until roughly 8am on weekends so that helps me feel a bit more rested.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 11/11/2019 18:05

I go up at 11pm and read til midnight most nights. Every few weeks I go up at 8pm when the youngest goes up, like recharging my batteries.

I never lie in, though, and my internal clock wakes me at 6am on the dot each day. Any more sleep than that and I feel grouchy and cross for hours.

IvinghoeBeacon · 11/11/2019 18:07

In bed by 9pm, asleep by 9.30. I have pregnancy insomnia so spend 2-3hrs awake in the middle of the night most nights and my son wakes up at 5.30-6am (he is usually asleep by 7.30pm). Same weekends as weekdays. I get just about “enough” hours overall but feel shattered

Muwanain · 11/11/2019 18:36

11.30pm

Emeraldshamrock · 11/11/2019 18:37

It varies.
I work over nights, 8pm is the earliest when I am exhausted.
Try to take 2 night's when you go when they go, I know the alone time is precious but it is causes more tiredness.
Squeeze the extra tidy before you bring them up or skip it.
They'll take it all back out in the morning.
You definitely need some early nights with young DC.

DS every night - Bed at 8:30pm, sleeping by 8:45pm, wakes at 7:30am. 10.75 hours sleep

DH weekdays - Bed at 9:30pm, sleeping by 10pm, wakes at 5:15am (starts work at 6). 7.25 hours sleep

Me weekdays - Bed at 11:30pm-ish, sleeping right away, wake at 7:30am (same as DS). 8 hours sleep

Me and DH on Fri and Sat night - Bed around midnight, sleeping by about 12:30am, DH wakes at 7:30am with DS, I wake around 8:30am (DH can't seem to sleep much more than 7 hours). DH 7 hours, me 8 hours.

I generally do more in the evening though. I cook, I clean the kitchen, I sort out washing and look out the clothes etc for the next day. I also do the shopping list, check the bank account etc at night once DS and DH are in bed

I work 18 hours a week Mon-Fri 4 days and DH works 40 hours a week Mon-Fri 5 days. DS is 3 and goes to playgroup 4 mornings a week (I work when he is there and mil takes him for a few hours too)

LynseyLou1982 · 11/11/2019 19:32

I usually go up about 10pm but they time I've got my pj's on and brushed teeth egg it's about 10:20before I get into bed. Some nights I read till about 11pm other nights I'm straight out and some nights in asleep on the sofa by 9pm so go up early. Usually Fridays. I work full time Mon-Fri and I have a 1.5 year old that's usually at 6am.

cptartapp · 11/11/2019 19:35

I have teenagers. I'm asleep before they are. Bed between 9-9.30pm and asleep in ten mins. Usually awake adound 7am. Have always needed loads of sleep.

sevenswansareswimming · 11/11/2019 19:41

1 year old DS is asleep for 7, me and DP are in bed for no later than 9. Dp is asleep for half 9 and me for 10. Sometimes we are in bed for 8. Ds is up between 4 and 5 every morning so we make the most of the sleep!

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 11/11/2019 19:44

I work 5 days, have a 10 yr old and a 7 year old. Never asleep before midnight, often later, and up around 6.45. (During the week). Weekends I try to go to bed a bit earlier and up a bit later. I definitely would like more sleep but it seems to get so late so quickly!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 11/11/2019 19:45

I agree with a pp that the trick is occasional early nights. I mostly go to bed at 11 and normally read until 11.30, but about once a week I go to bed at 9.30 (I get up at 6 during the week, around 6.30/7 at the weekend). I'd find it incredibly depressing to go to bed at 9.30 every night, but one long sleep when I'm knackered does wonders.

lljkk · 11/11/2019 19:46

What is "refreshed"? I honestly don't know.

I seem to manage (FT job+ & lots of physical exercise & stuff to do for kids) on 6 hrs as avg & can do a few nights back to back on 2-4 hrs. My sleep is extremely interrupted (insomnia), often awake for several hours in middle of night.

blackteasplease · 11/11/2019 19:48

I go to sleep anything fr around 12 - 1. I would love to go to bed earlier but it’s like my body clock wakes up in the evening. In the mornings I’m exhausted! I get up at 7 but it’s a struggle. I want to sleep all day like nothing on earth but as soon as the kids are in bed (eldest is 11 so that’s about 9.30- 10) and I’ve maybe tidied a bit or done some jobs, I feel like I must have some time to myself.

IvinghoeBeacon · 11/11/2019 19:52

“I'd find it incredibly depressing to go to bed at 9.30 every night”

Well I don’t love it and it wasn’t what I did before I had a child and then a second pregnancy (and his sleep as a baby was horrendous...)
I see it as temporary just to get an approximation of the sleep I need. I’m sure one day I will get to enjoy late evenings again

WellGoshDarnIt · 11/11/2019 19:58

I go up to bed between 12-1. To be honest, it's not ideal and hopefully will change in the next year or so. My problem is that I don't get in from work until 9-9.30, then I have to eat and have a bath. If I go to bed any earlier than 12 then I feel like I've had no time at all to wind down, and as I'm suffering with anxiety at the moment I need to take that time to myself to relax. I get up at 6.30. I am exhausted in the week, so try to have a lie in on Sundays.

HairyFloppins · 11/11/2019 20:02

I'm a night owl so go up at midnight, normally asleep for 12.30am.

Up at 7am. My kids are 13 and 18 though and I work from home so I can just relax most of the day.

My DH is the opposite and goes to bed a bit earlier than me. He works long shifts though.

Dollymixture22 · 11/11/2019 20:03

Try to get to bed by 10pm - usually am asleep by 10:30. Alarm is set for 6am, but this can be a struggle.

Bluesheep8 · 11/11/2019 20:03

Bed at 8:30 usually. Up at 5:45. Work full time, I've got MS and get really fatigued. I have to sleep to be able to work

AuntGinny · 11/11/2019 20:06

I'd love to be able to go to bed at 9pm! I would be happy to sacrifice almost anything to wake up not feeling like crap every morning. Sleep is marvellous marvellous stuff. Insomnia is evil. I don't mind being perceived as dull or boring, there is nothing more dull or boring than living life at half pace because you are always surviving on half a nights sleep

Minikievs · 11/11/2019 20:07

Gosh I didn’t realise how early most people go to bed!
Single parent to a 9 and 6 year old.
Bed by 11, up at 7 on average.
I am constantly tired, but they don’t get settled til 8pm and I have so much to do in those couple of hours.

Elbeagle · 11/11/2019 20:09

If I was up at 7 I’d go to bed at 11 too, unfortunately I’m up at 5.30 and 2-3 times in the night as well!

YessicaHaircut · 11/11/2019 20:12

I’ve just got into bed now and that’s pretty normal for a weeknight during autumn & winter. I’ll read/watch a bit of TV/listen to radio 4 and usually asleep around 10pm. Up by 6.30am every day and find it hard to sleep past about 7am at weekends, though we tend to sit up later on a Friday/Saturday to watch a film.

I have hypothyroidism so feel v tired after work most days especially when it gets dark so early. Used to be a proper night owl when I lived in a shared house before I met DH but then always needed a big lie in to make up for it!

teenagetantrums · 11/11/2019 20:15

I'm just about to go to bed I'm so tired. But l know l will be awake at least 3rimes before my 6am start.
My kids all grown and left now but l actually think l got more sleep when they were toddlers. I do not like the menopause.
