There's me, my husband and 16month old. I shop at Aldi every week and spend about £300 per month. We have the odd takeaway and I batch cook everything. I'm trying to find ways to cut costs but not sure if it's unreasonable to expect to do a shop any cheaper. We buy a lot of fresh fruit and veg and eat meat regularly. How much do you spend per month? I'm wondering whether it's worth bulk buying at the start of the month...

@Mominatrix

I don't think we are profligate, and I cook most things from scratch (pasta, breads, etc).

  • about £800/month at the grocery
  • popups during the week of £200 month
  • eating out £600/month

fucking hell that's our whole household income

£120-140. Two adults & one toddler. It's all we have left to spend on food after everything else has been paid for. I make a lot of £1 meals (thanks miguel!) and use Jack Monroe's recipes. But by christ would I love a takeaway every now and then :(

We don't shop weekly but £60 lasts us for over a week with the odd £10 top up of milk and bread, sometimes our weekly shop is 10 days apart. It includes all food, household stuff like cleaning, laundry etc and cat food. Every few months I'll do a huge top up and spend 100-150 if we have run low on everything all at once.
Family of 4, 2 adults 3 meals per day, 2 primary kids 2 meals per day plus snack, we don't have the kids every other weekend. Sometimes includes alcohol.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't actually know anymore.

Up until about 2 years ago, I used to keep a tight rein on things and spend £250/month max plus pets.

I would guess it's now around £300-500 per month for 2 adults and 2 older teens, including all households stuff, but not pets, which is around £40/month.

I tend to shop at Morrisons, Asda, and Aldi, (and occasionally at Lidl) with top ups at Tesco Express if needed.

I cook 99% from scratch, and buy lots of vegetables, fruit and ethically reared meat, as well as baking my own bread.

For example, my most recent shop consisted of mainly fresh veg, fruit, yogurt, 500g pork belly and milk and it came to almost £68.
About 75% of that ship was veg, maybe 15% fruit and the rest only made up 10%.

My meat comes from a local butchers, and I tend to buy in bulk every few months, and freeze it in portions.

At least £400 a month, 2 adults 2 primary aged children. This includes all extras for cleaning products and toiletries, and packed lunches for myself and DC. We do eat well for that, lots of fruit and veg.

Please don't judge me as I am a little ashamed. I spend on average £20_30 a day. I have to shop daily as I am a vegetarian and got an extremely small kitchen. That's for
3 Adults and 1 15yo and 2 cats and 1 dog and if any of my dcs or gss come over for dinner which they do about 3 times a week I have it all.. it seems expensive although if I had more room in my kitchen to put food I would be able to shop a little cheaper but not much me thinks.

Novemberblu3s · 12/11/2019 11:40

guess about 700-800.

2 adults, a demolishing pre teen, a 9 yo and a cat.

Kids eat school dinners but DH and I take lunch to work. We also pretty much never eat out nor do we have takeaways so it is pretty much all we eat.

ForMySorrow · 12/11/2019 12:01

We draw out £240 for the month for two adults and a child. Includes packed lunches for school/work, all cleaning materials, all toiletries etc. Usually have £20/£30 ish left over at the end of the month for a takeaway.

Whattodoabout · 12/11/2019 12:16

About £380 a month, two adults and four children under the age of ten.

We also mostly shop at Aldi with the odd thing from Morrisons or Tesco. I cook most meals from scratch, we all take packed lunches to work/school and we’re vegetarian which I think lowers the cost.
