There's me, my husband and 16month old. I shop at Aldi every week and spend about £300 per month. We have the odd takeaway and I batch cook everything. I'm trying to find ways to cut costs but not sure if it's unreasonable to expect to do a shop any cheaper. We buy a lot of fresh fruit and veg and eat meat regularly. How much do you spend per month? I'm wondering whether it's worth bulk buying at the start of the month...

For one adult, 10yr old, (almost)7yr old, 4yr old and 2yr old, two dogs and 5 rabbits! I'm always around the £180 mark.

I shop at Sainsbury's, Aldi, M&S and Booths. I also buy coffee/tea, laundry detergent, toilet paper etc. in bulk from Costco every few months.

I never batch cook, definitely not wasteful though and I tend to plan my week's meals.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 11/11/2019 16:32

Probably around £300-350 per month for 2 adults a teen, a tween, a cat and 2 dogs.
That’s all house hold items and toiletries included.

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 11/11/2019 16:34

Around £250 per month for two adults and one toddler.
I batch cook but not religiously. It includes toddler snacks/treats, nappies, cleaning products.
I place a home delivery order with Tesco once per month for freezer/cupboard necessaries plus that includes one lot of fresh veg and fruit. Usually spend between £80-120 depending how low the freezer or tins cupboard is running. We don't eat meat, but it does include fish and some branded Quorn products for quick nights and our bread products which go in the freezer and defrost as needed.
We then top up from the co op - mostly fruit and veg, milk, treats - beer for DH, snacks for Saturday night tele watching.
We could definitely rein it in and spend a lot less if we needed, although I would need to be careful of DH's snack spends.

ssd · 11/11/2019 16:34

Probably closer to £500 a month, now I think about it. Cook from scratch, never ready meals. 2 adult kids dh and I. No alcohol or cigs.

emzey · 11/11/2019 16:37

I think we're at about £250 a week. I thought I was just badWink I cook mostly from fresh. I do sometimes over buy and it goes in the freezer. I try and buy as good ingredients as I can get regarding meat and veg etc and have tried to cut down but...
I'm blaming my husband, he wants something different to eat and that's what he gets!
I applaud all the parents on here that can do this for less. Its brilliant.

sammybins · 11/11/2019 16:44

I spend £60-70 a week, in Tesco. two adults, one kid, so, roughly 240-280 a month.

YoYoNoMore · 11/11/2019 16:57

2 adults, 2 young children. We spend £45-50 on a weekly food shop which includes nappies, cleaning products and toiletries. We shop at Tesco as pp have said, the cheaper stores don’t have everything we want.

Caplin · 11/11/2019 17:04

Around £500-600 a month for 2 adults, 9 and 7 year old and 2 cats.

That includes booze, and toiletries etc. We also have people over quite a bit so get lots of nice things in to cook for them.

InDubiousBattle · 11/11/2019 17:06

Two adults and two dc (4 and 5)here and we spend between £350-500 a month, but that includes cleaning stuff, toiletries, flowers, booze and we have extra mouths usually once a week (family over for tea etc). I tend to do a big shop at the start of the month (asda)with all tins, pasta, toilet roll, washing powder, booze etc and then do weekly shops at Aldi for fresh stuff. I meal plan and cook from scratch. I don't think £300 a month is too bad really- we'd spend a similar amount (maybe a bit more)if we didn't entertain so much I don't think we're very extravagant. If you wanted to reduce it meal planning, reducing meat and eliminating waste would help.

Loveagoodpaxo · 11/11/2019 17:08

I spend easily £100 a week on our weekly shop and then top up too. This does include all household stuff too like washing powder. We buy own brand stuff not Heinz etc.
That’s 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 primary age boys.
We are foodies and like to east healthily, all home made from scratch so it will cost more than processed crap.

Noroof · 11/11/2019 17:14

I don't keep close tabs. Aldi once a week at around 60/70. A least one top up for milk etc. Say 10/15. A takeaway is 12. Every few weeks I'll do Tesco as we need nappies and I don't like aldi ones... plus cleaning products 60. I then every couple of months do a home bargains run of 30/40.
Hhm. I'd say 100 a week

Lazypuppy · 11/11/2019 17:20

£160 a month at tesco, then 1 takeaway a week at about £15 a time so £220 in total.

2 adults and an 18month old

stucknoue · 11/11/2019 17:22

£200 a month now including cleaning materials. Just dd (adult) and I now. Used to spend £600+ when it was the 4 of us (h left, other dc went to university)

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 11/11/2019 17:25

500 a month

Shop at Lidl and top ups at coop

Two hungry teens and DH and I have big appetite too Grin

And a dog!

DawnOfTheDeadleg · 11/11/2019 17:27

About £90 a week tops for 2 adults 2 kids, includes bog roll etc as well.

My friend switched from monthly to weekly and found she spent less money that way. So I'm not convinced monthly is the answer. Depends how disciplined you are with the top up shops.

bellsbuss · 11/11/2019 17:31

£700-£800 2 adults and 4 children

WagtailRobin · 11/11/2019 17:34

We waste a lot of money on food because we tend to buy local mostly day by day, instead of doing a big weekly shop. I know we'd save money going to a supermarket etc but popping into a local small shop is just far more convenient and much less time consuming.

There's two of us and I would say we spend about £20 a day on food, grabbing lunch from the deli, something already prepared in the evenings at the Spar or getting a takeaway.

We will be changing this come the new year and making an effort to organise a supermarket shop every week/month, I genuinely believe we could save at least £100 or so.

MustardScreams · 11/11/2019 17:37

Dd and I. Around £350 a month which is insane because dd eats breakfast, lunch & dinner at nursery 3 days a week and then is at her dads on a Sunday day/night.

I need to get it under control!

dottiedodah · 11/11/2019 17:38

4 of us here ,around £500/£600 per month (Son lives in flat but home at W/E .That includes loo roll ,soap powder and so on. I think food is expensive and we eat fairly well .Important for health and well being really .Only have the one car ,DH cycles .

cannotmakemymindup · 11/11/2019 17:41

We spend £300 that's our monthly budget which we keep to for 2 Adults and 1 Dd 5 years. That's for all food, washing powders, cleaning products, loo roll etc,. But included in that is one gousto box a month to.
Eating out is a separate bill. Some months keep it a little lower like £250.
But I am happy with that amount as it's only £10 a day for all three of us to eat, drink and stay clean. Or £3.33 per person per day.
Sometimes I think it helps to look it like that. Then there's other ways to cut down. Martin Lewis website has a budget planner that is great.

Lipperfromchipper · 11/11/2019 17:42

Me, dh and two dc age 4 and 6 I spend 60 a week, I meal plan and cook from scratch. I also don’t buy biscuits/juices/Sweets/crisps etc

Turt · 11/11/2019 17:45

£200 - £240 for 2 adults and a cat, soon to increase with a baby!

Limensoda · 11/11/2019 17:46

Just two of us now and all our shopping is £150 to £200 per month.
We plan meals and never waste anything.

Focyt · 11/11/2019 17:49

600 a month. Not including top ups. 2 adults and 11 year old.i shop in Sainsbury’s. I could save if I went to Aldi but I absolutely hate the place.

stopwining · 11/11/2019 18:21

I used to spend around £600 per month for me, DH and DSD with us at weekends.

It was ridiculous but I loved to cook. I've now started doing HelloFresh and it's saved us a fortune, we buy 5 meals usually including Sunday lunch type one, then eat it sun - thurs so I only have to cook fri sat when DSD here.

Makes it much less of a chore, we still get to cook fresh healthy meals and prob now spend £45 a week on HF and prob £40 in Tesco for fri Saturday
